It seemed like she had a wonderful and long dream.
She slowly opened her eyes, recalling how after making their vows last night, they returned to the room together, bathed in soft moonlight, talking about each other. She listened to many stories she had never heard before, laughing heartily at times and shedding tears at others. Those words strung together like beads, connecting their pasts and leading to their future.
Then she became sleepy and leaned against his shoulder, falling into a deep sleep. When she woke up, it was already dawn.
Shangguan Shaoyi sat upright like a statue, not moving at all. His black eyes, as dark as lacquer, gazed at a distant point. The light in his eyes was bright and clear. As if sensing the movement of the beauty beside him, he turned his gaze to her with a look full of affection. "You're awake?"
Cheng Mo Su shyly nodded and hurriedly lifted her small head from his shoulder. He rubbed his sore shoulder; after all, maintaining that position for an entire night was quite taxing even for him.
Cheng Mo Su's water-colored eyes shimmered, and her rose-colored lips formed a lovely arc. "I fell asleep yesterday. You let me lean on you all night; it must have been uncomfortable for you." She reached out to gently massage Shangguan Shaoyi's shoulder. Her delicate hands lacked strength, softly resting on him. He felt a stir in his heart and gently grasped her, pulling Cheng Mo Su securely into his embrace.
Her face had already turned half red, her fair skin resembling a layer of rosy clouds. She weakly leaned against his solid chest. "What are you doing?"
He smiled mischievously and lightly pecked her rose-colored lips. She closed her eyes, but he lifted her up.
"Mo Su, the situation outside is not good. I might be busy for the next few days. If you have nothing to do, please don't go out. I'm afraid they might hold too much prejudice against you and take some extreme actions." He repeatedly urged her while gently stroking her hair, his eyes filled with tenderness and concern.
Cheng Mo Su's heart sank slightly as she nodded in response.
"If you need anything, call the command center. I've already instructed them; they will find me immediately when they receive your call." Still feeling uneasy, Shangguan Shaoyi chuckled self-deprecatingly, never expecting that one day he would become so talkative despite being usually at a loss for words.
"Okay." She responded softly with one word, glancing at the formal attire she was still wearing, smiling lightly with eyes like morning stars. "Shaoyi, don't worry; I will listen to you well. From now on, I will take everything you say seriously."
Shangguan Shaoyi looked at her reluctantly before turning to leave. The crowd at the entrance was still shouting incessantly as the military vehicle drove straight back to the command center.
"Young Marshal." Shen Mingliang immediately approached, looking uneasy. "Young Marshal, the citizens in Feng Province have been discussing this matter, and it's growing increasingly widespread. This is truly becoming unmanageable. Moreover, the various bigwigs in the military are already waiting in the conference room, likely to pressure you into a compromise."
Shangguan Shaoyi's gaze was exceptionally cold and sharp as he looked into the distance and said indifferently, "I have already pledged my life to Mo Su and will not marry another woman. Contact Northwest's Ruan Yu for me. As far as I know, he has long complained about Jiang Shaohao. We are both warlords and naturally do not wish for Jiang Shaohao to come seeking revenge. If we can join forces, we will surely be able to concentrate our strength and break through the south."
"But Young Marshal, the south is wealthy and powerful, backed by foreign support. If we confront them head-on now, it is likely that..."
"This battle will have to be fought sooner or later. Even if I marry Jiang Shaohao's daughter to avoid immediate conflict, I will inevitably be controlled by him in the future," Shangguan Shaoyi replied calmly.
"If you join forces with Ruan Yu now, public resentment will likely grow even larger. After all, they have been kept in the dark by that scoundrel Jiang Shaohao and know nothing."
"This is also one of my concerns, and it is impossible to explain these complex interests to them," Shangguan Shaoyi retracted his cold gaze, a hint of helplessness appearing on his sharply defined face. "But we still need to appease them. Arrange for me to give speeches at several prominent universities tomorrow; if we can persuade even one person, it will help."
"Understood!" Shen Mingliang nodded but suddenly remembered something. "By the way, Young Marshal, Mr. Inoue from Japan is coming to visit in a few days. It’s probably regarding the recent incident involving Yun Yun's shooting. Our internal and external situation is not good."
Shangguan Shaoyi clenched his fist, his eyes becoming even colder. "Why didn't you mention this earlier? Do not contact Ruan Yu for now. I need to attend a meeting first; prepare the car immediately."
Shen Mingliang did not know what Shangguan Shaoyi was planning and could not ask anything further; he could only comply immediately as he followed Shangguan Shaoyi into the conference room.
All eyes turned toward him as he entered. He stood tall with a firm stride; his cold face bore eyes as dark as lacquer that shone brightly with extraordinary depth. His sword-like brows were slightly raised, lips pressed together lightly, and his military uniform accentuated his heroic demeanor while exuding an unmistakable sharpness.
Several respected generals in the military exchanged glances and nodded slightly at each other in silent communication.
"Everyone, please take a seat. The meeting is about to begin." He walked to the main seat, his gaze sweeping lightly over the room. "Now, Country is in peril, with various external forces lurking around. It is evident that all of this is part of Jiang Shanghao's scheme. We should not expend our energy on this incident."
"Young Commander," one of the elders spoke up, "but public discontent is deep. It would be unwise to engage in war with the south at this time, or it will only lead to more grievances. However, if you wish to quell the public's anger, you may have to sacrifice the beauty."
Shangguan Shaoyi's eyes narrowed, and he snorted coldly. "Everyone here is a pillar of the nation. We cannot neglect the rise and fall of Country due to such matters and allow the enemy to take advantage. As for the issue of public discontent, I will find a way to resolve it."
After a long silence, the elder spoke again, "Since ancient times, public discontent has been difficult to quell. Young Commander, have you thought of any solutions?"
A tide of voices surged in his mind, overwhelming him. His Black as Ink eyes slowly scanned the faces of the Generals, pausing slightly. "I already have a preliminary plan. Everyone, I do not undertake uncertain matters. Please give me seven days. If public discontent has not subsided after seven days, I am willing to accept your suggestions!"
The Generals exchanged glances and whispered among themselves for a moment. Their eyes shifted to this Black Eyes youth, observing the coldness emanating from him that was not typical for his age. After a brief silence, they finally nodded in agreement.
"Young Commander." Shen Mingliang stood at attention and saluted, leaning closer to whisper in his ear, "Report to Young Commander, I just received a call from Miss Shangguan. It seems that Miss Cheng's room has been vandalized; it was hit with a slingshot."
Shangguan Shaoyi frowned, his gaze burning with intensity and anger. These people were going too far. "Let's go back and take a look!"
"Yes!"
