After lunch, the two strolled back, the sunlight warm, and life was peaceful.
As soon as they entered, they saw Shen Deputy Officer with a flushed face. Beside him, Xiao Jing wore a faint smile. Shangguan Shaoyi exchanged a glance with Shen Mingliang, who immediately responded and hurried to the study, seemingly escaping from the dining room.
Cheng Mo felt curious and pulled Xiao Jing to ask, "What did you say to Shen Deputy Officer? He seems quite afraid of you."
Xiao Jing smiled lightly, lowering her head to tidy up the dishes on the table. "It was just some old stories from before."
In the study, the scent of ink filled the air. Shangguan Shaoyi pulled open the half-drawn curtain, and brilliant sunlight streamed in. He casually sat down, his long fingers holding a cigar, smoke enveloping his coldly handsome face. Shen Mingliang stood beside him, standing straight and silent.
Shangguan Shaoyi's jet-black eyes fixed on him with a hint of amusement. "What do you think of Xiao Jing?"
"Well..." Shen Mingliang's face turned red again. "I... I fear I am not worthy of Miss Xiao Jing."
"Oh?" Shangguan Shaoyi raised an eyebrow.
Shen Mingliang scratched his head, looking embarrassed. "She talked to me about poetry and ancient paintings, literary figures and such. I couldn't understand any of it. I think she must see me as a rough man. Sigh, I suppose I should just follow the Young Marshal and avoid being laughed at."
Shangguan Shaoyi chuckled softly. "Xiao Jing comes from a good background; her grandfather was once a successful scholar. Unfortunately, her father squandered the family fortune, and she was later kidnapped by traffickers, which is how she ended up as a maid in my household. If you put in some effort and time, you can win her over."
"Yes," Shen Mingliang nodded, then seemed to remember something. "Young Marshal, reports from the front indicate that the Southern Government has halted their campaign; we can rest easy now."
His gaze regained its previous sharpness, and the corners of his lips slightly curled up as he coldly snorted. "'Rest easy' is premature; it seems to me like a storm is brewing."
"Then what do you suggest we do?"
Shangguan Shaoyi stood up, backlit by the Sunlight, with a heroic spirit in his brows. "Continue to be on guard!"
"Yes!"
Cheng Mo Su had taken a short nap, and when she woke up, Shaoyi had already gone to the command center with Shen Deputy Officer. With nothing to do, she invited Xiao Jing to stroll around Feng Province. The two called for a rickshaw and, accompanied by the sultry Summer Breeze, they floated through the streets of summer in Feng Province.
Just as students were getting out of class, groups of men and women dressed in Zhongshan suits walked briskly, creating a unique scene on the street that made Xiao Jing envious. She turned to Cheng Mo Su and asked, "Did Miss Cheng also go to school like this before?"
"No, my father hired teachers to teach me at home," she replied with a gentle smile. However, her gaze caught sight of a familiar Face, and she paused slightly. Upon closer inspection, it was the Miss Xia she had met at the Rong Family, Xia Yixiang.
Xia Yixiang clearly saw Cheng Mo Su as well. She hesitated for a moment before walking toward her. Cheng Mo Su quickly signaled the rickshaw driver to stop, got out, and exchanged pleasantries.
"Miss Cheng, long time no see." Xia Yixiang nodded slightly; her features were not particularly exquisite but had their own charm after a while.
"Is Miss Xia studying here?" Cheng Mo Su responded with a smile but noticed that Xia Yixiang had slightly faded her smile, her face showing an indescribable emotion.
"Yes." Xia Yixiang brushed back some stray hair from her forehead and took out some loose change from her bag to hand to the rickshaw driver. "You can go back now; there's something I want to discuss privately with Miss Cheng." The driver looked uncertain, glancing at Cheng Mo Su for confirmation. She nodded, and only then did he leave.
The two chose a Western restaurant for their meal. Located on the second floor, their table by the window offered a perfect view of the afternoon scenery in Feng Province. Cheng Mo Su quietly sipped her lemonade, her dark hair cascading down in varying lengths. With slightly lowered brows, her delicate Fingertips held the transparent glass cup, and the smile at the corners of her lips was quietly beautiful.
Xia Yixiang gazed at Cheng Mo Su, lost in thought, and couldn't help but sigh: "Miss Cheng, your temperament is so remarkable; no wonder Mr. Shangguan ultimately chose you instead of Yu Qiao..."
Cheng Mo Su smiled faintly and reached out to adjust the pink lamp beside her. The soft red light enveloped her snow-like skin, adding a touch of colorful glow to her appearance. "The beauty has passed; why must we mention it again, Miss Xia?"
"Right, anyway, Yu Qiao is dead; it's you who should be happy," Xia Yixiang said discontentedly.
Cheng Mo's long Eyelashes fluttered slightly as she looked at her in confusion. "Why do you say that, Miss Xia?" She felt that Xia Yixiang was somewhat unreasonable and decided not to engage further. "If Miss Xia has something to say, please speak directly. I need to get home."
"Home? That probably isn't your home yet," Xia Yixiang scoffed. "Has Miss Shangguan accepted you?"
"This seems to have nothing to do with you. If Miss Xia is only here to say these things, then I won't keep you company." Cheng Mo smiled lightly, showing no sign of anger on her face, but the colors in her Water-colored Eyes rippled as if they came from the horizon.
Xia Yixiang stood up, her face showing displeasure. "It's nothing. I just want to see if you can stand there so comfortably beside him. I met Yu Qiao at school and became friends with her. I've grown accustomed to seeing her with the Young Marshal, knowing they are meant for each other. If you didn't appear, they would be together forever, and then I could see him often..."
Cheng Mo was taken aback for a moment and finally understood that this Miss Xia had been harboring feelings for Shaoyi...
"Miss Cheng, you probably don't know, but there are stories circulating at school about you and the Young Marshal. Your elopement has become a topic of gossip among the students. Do you know what they are saying about you?" She lowered her voice and leaned closer to her ear. "They say you're shameless, that you're a seductress, that you and the Young Marshal..."
"Is that all you wanted to tell me?" Cheng Mo interrupted her, smiling lightly. "Do you hope to shake my emotions with these words?"
Xia Yixiang was taken aback. If she understood correctly, these young ladies cared most about their reputations, yet Cheng Mo seemed completely unconcerned, which puzzled her greatly. Cheng Mo smiled slightly, appearing calm and gentle. "Miss Xia, I used to care about others' opinions, but it's different now. Since I made this decision, I've said goodbye to my past self."
She stood up, took some money from her bag, and placed it on the deep blue table. "Although I haven't eaten much, thank you for your hospitality."
As Xia Yixiang watched her graceful figure fade away, she felt as if she had been drained of energy and collapsed into a seat, her Lip Corners twisted in anger.
