Silent and tranquil, yet more profound than the tangible.
Shangguan Shaoyi looked at Cheng Mo Su's profile and then at Rong Hai's inscrutable expression, smiling slightly. "I only need Mo Su by my side; Yu Qiao deserves a better home. She should find someone who loves her wholeheartedly."
Rong Hai shrugged and smiled. The crystal chandelier cast dazzling light, illuminating the couple in front of him, making it somewhat blinding. Yet he could foresee the outcome ahead. He no longer felt the need to force anything, waving his hand. "I understand your meaning. I will convey it to Yu Qiao; the rest depends on her decision."
Cheng Mo Su followed Shangguan Shaoyi out of Rong Family Mansion, her brows lowered, looking somewhat lost.
"What's wrong?" Shangguan Shaoyi asked with concern.
"I..." She raised her eyes, looking at Shangguan Shaoyi's handsome face so close to her, smiling as she shook her head. "It's nothing, just a bit hungry."
Shangguan Shaoyi raised an eyebrow but did not expose her words. He took her hand into his palm and smiled. "Do you want to eat at home or go to a restaurant?"
"Let's eat at home." Cheng Mo Su's water-colored eyes were clear and bright, revealing a hint of her pearly white teeth. "I learned a few dishes and want to cook for you."
"Oh?" Shangguan Shaoyi's eyes lit up, and he affectionately kissed her forehead. "When did you learn?"
Cheng Mo Su blushed and gently linked her arm with his. "Just recently."
Once they returned to the room, Cheng Mo Su hurried to the kitchen, leaving Shangguan Shaoyi alone in the room.
He took a deep breath, feeling the lingering fragrance of Cheng Mo Su fill the air. On the willow table she often used lay a Jingdezhen porcelain vase and a foreign book with a matte cover. He picked it up gently; the thin book felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
Cheng Mo Su entered with a tray and saw him staring blankly at her book, smiling slightly. "Did you wait long? The food is ready; come eat."
Shangguan Shaoyi turned his head at the sound and was taken aback by the potato beef porridge in the blue porcelain bowl on the tray. He blurted out, "How did you know I liked this?"
"I asked Xiao Jing; she said this is your favorite dish since childhood. Originally, it was meant to be a dish, but I heard from my sister that you were going to dinner with President Wang tonight, so I made it into porridge." Her cheeks were flushed, and beads of sweat glistened on her forehead, likely from the steam while cooking. She brought the porridge closer to him with slightly trembling arms. He quickly took it from her, scooped a spoonful, and tasted it.
"How is it?" Cheng Mo Su watched him nervously.
For a moment, Shangguan Shaoyi was speechless; he quietly drank the porridge while gazing at her delicate face. Her serious yet hopeful eyes added an air of beauty to her that made him want to stand there silently and admire her.
Seeing him staring at her continuously made Cheng Mo Su's blush deepen. Her delicate wrist climbed up his arm as she lowered her gaze and asked softly, "Is it not good?"
"It's good." He smiled as he set down the bowl, his eyes filled with such warmth that it left Cheng Mo Su momentarily speechless. "It's so good that I don't even know how to respond."
Cheng Mo Su smiled shyly, lowering her brows even more, her voice as soft as a whisper, "Then I'll make it for you every day from now on, okay?"
"Okay." He softly replied with a single word, yet it felt like a heavy promise, bringing her great comfort.
"Mo Su." A voice from outside interrupted their gaze.
Cheng Mo Su quickly responded, and Shangguan Yiting entered with a smile. Seeing the hot porridge in Shangguan Shaoyi's hands, she teased, "Wow, you're already so considerate before even stepping inside."
Cheng Mo Su's face flushed red as she shot a glare at Shangguan Yiting. Shangguan Shaoyi, however, was particularly generous, wrapping his arms around Cheng Mo Su and raising an eyebrow, "Yes, sister should learn well too."
"Oh dear." Shangguan Yiting's gaze shifted between the two, "I was just joking with Mo Su, and you act like you want to defend her. Really..."
"Stop talking." Cheng Mo Su's blush deepened. She gently grasped Shangguan Shaoyi's sleeve, her delicate fragrance wafting through the air and reaching Shangguan Shaoyi's senses, his deep eyes captivating.
Shangguan Shaoyi lightly pecked her Rose-Colored Lips, smiling, "If you don't want to talk about it, then let's not."
"Tsk tsk." Shangguan Yiting covered her laughter lightly, "You two are so affectionate; I feel like a third wheel."
"Sister..." Cheng Mo Su glared at her again, lowering her gaze, which made Shangguan Yiting laugh heartily. She took Cheng Mo Su's hand and said, "Alright, my dear sister, let's not talk about that anymore. Tonight I've arranged for the ladies from Feng Province to play cards; you must come."
Cheng Mo Su looked questioningly at Shangguan Shaoyi, who nodded back at her. "Go ahead; this is the circle you'll be living in from now on. Getting familiar with those ladies will only do you good."
In the evening, the Shangguan Residence was lively. The hall was adorned with a newly added marble screen by Shangguan Yiting, which housed a mahjong table surrounded by various fruit teas. Several ladies were seated on intricately carved rosewood chairs chatting and joking while maids stood nearby holding sandalwood incense boxes, filling the air with fragrance amidst the noise.
"I won." Cheng Mo Su smiled lightly.
"Wow, tonight Mo Su is just winning money left and right; you guys keep giving her good tiles," Shangguan Yiting remarked as her hand swept over the scattered mahjong tiles, the gold bracelet on her wrist jingling.
"That's just Miss Cheng's good luck," one lady chimed in with a beaming smile.
"Indeed! As the saying goes, one's luck at cards reflects one's character. This Miss Cheng has won so much yet remains so composed; it's truly rare to see. If it were me, I would have been overjoyed by now," another lady added with a smile.
"It's this kind of character that makes our Feng Province's young master Shangguan respect her so much." The compliments from several people made Cheng Mo Su feel overwhelmed; she had never liked such environments since childhood, finding large gatherings noisy and headache-inducing. A rosy hue spread across her delicate face as her gaze began to wander.
"What's wrong, Mo Su? Are you feeling unwell?" Shangguan Yiting noticed that Cheng Mo Su had been suffering from lingering effects since her last illness. Now, seeing Cheng Mo Su's unusual expression made her feel anxious as well.
"I'm fine, just a bit tired. I’ll feel better after resting for a while."
"Alright, then I'll accompany you outside for a walk." Shangguan Yiting straightened up and took her hand. Before Cheng Mo Su could refuse, she added, "Miss Liao, Miss Mu, you two take over my and Mo Su's seats. We'll step out for a bit."
The two of them walked hand in hand through the corridor, passing through the hall, walking by the fountain, and going past the rockery until they chose two clean stone benches to sit down. Cheng Mo Su's gaze inadvertently drifted toward the entrance, her lips slightly curling up as if she were waiting for someone to appear.
"Oh, who are you waiting for?" Shangguan Yiting teased.
Cheng Mo Su quickly withdrew her gaze and shook her head. Her eyes flickered past Shangguan Yiting, who had an elegant face with a hint of heroism. A chuckle escaped Shangguan Yiting's lips, causing Cheng Mo Su's cheeks to flush even more.
At that moment, the person she was hoping for had just finished a meal and was driving back.
"Young Master." Shen Mingliang had keen eyesight and pointed ahead. "Isn't that Miss Rong up there?"
Shangguan Shaoyi opened his half-closed eyes and looked in the direction Shen Mingliang indicated. The figure indeed belonged to Rong Yuqiao, but she wore an expression of sorrow he had never seen before. Her once lively eyes now appeared dry, moving mechanically as if searching for something.
Shangguan Shaoyi felt a pang in his heart and waved his hand. "Follow her."
