Shangguan Yiting arranged to meet Cheng Mo to watch a play. The two linked arms and walked to the theater, ascending the sandalwood stairs to the viewing platform. Once seated, a servant promptly presented them with agarwood tea leaves, and they exchanged smiles as they lightly sipped the fragrant tea.
"Does Sister Mo enjoy watching plays?" Shangguan Yiting asked with a smile.
"Of course, I love it. I used to go often in Shanghai, and sometimes I would even sing a couple of songs," Cheng Mo replied gracefully. "Since I haven't had any training, the other ladies say that my singing has a bit of my own flavor."
"Oh? How can all those ladies get on stage?" Shangguan Yiting asked curiously.
Cheng Mo smiled gently, her light blue Qipao accentuating her delicate features. Her water-like eyes sparkled even more, and the flowing white tassels of her shawl added to her softness. She chuckled lightly, "Naturally, it's under the pretense of raising funds for disaster relief; they just go up to have some fun."
"I see. One day, I must set up a stage at home and invite you to sing a song," Shangguan Yiting said with increasing amusement, making Cheng Mo blush even more as she playfully retorted, "Let's just watch the play."
Seeing her grow more bashful, Shangguan Yiting stopped teasing her. During their idle time before the performance began, Cheng Mo began to carefully observe her surroundings. Everywhere she looked was resplendent; although the stage had an antique charm, the seating area combined Western elements. A large crystal chandelier hung overhead, and private boxes surrounded them. All the chairs were made from carefully selected cherry wood, intricately carved and beautifully crafted like heavenly treasures.
Suddenly, the lights dimmed, leaving only the stage illuminated.
A woman dressed in theatrical costume stood center stage. Her graceful demeanor was captivating despite her wide sleeves obscuring her figure. Her paper-white cheeks contrasted with her softly parted red lips as she began to sing melodiously, her voice fluctuating in tempo—sometimes like an unquenchable flame and at other times like gentle moonlight.
"Wonderful!" As the scene concluded, everyone erupted into applause.
While clapping, Shangguan Yiting gestured with her eyes. Following her gaze, Cheng Mo noticed Shangguan Shaoyi sitting not far away, her piercing gaze fixed on the Hua Dan on stage, wearing an indescribable smile.
The spotlight followed the Hua Dan's movements, illuminating her elongated phoenix eyes and enhancing her enchanting beauty. She slightly parted her red lips as her fingers danced rhythmically beside them, cascading down her face. The clear charm in her expression left everyone in awe.
"Absolutely beautiful!" someone exclaimed loudly.
The Hua Dan remained undistracted by the applause and continued with her lyrics, her voice lingering sweetly in the air.
"Mo Su, what do you think of her singing?" Shangguan Yiting was also captivated; as a woman, she couldn't help but admire the beauty and talent of this Hua Dan.
"Very good," Cheng Mo lightly said, her Rose-Colored Lips barely moving as she spoke these two words, her gaze occasionally drifting towards Shangguan Shaoyi.
"Do you know? She is a noble from the previous dynasty, and now she has changed her surname to 'Jin', going by Jin Yunqi. With the change of times, her family has fallen, and she can only make a living by performing," Shangguan Yiting said, taking a sip of tea. "However, she truly excels in her performances. Many wealthy young masters are willing to spend lavishly on her. I've heard that someone even opened a restaurant for her called Xiangshui Tower. If you're interested, we could go there and try it."
As they spoke, the performance came to an end.
Shangguan Yiting's gaze fell on the distracted Cheng Mo and couldn't help but smile. "What’s wrong? Do you want to go greet your ideal husband?"
Cheng Mo hurriedly withdrew her gaze, lowering her brows. "Sister, don't say such things. He is so engrossed in the performance; how could he have time for me?"
Shangguan Yiting chuckled and was about to respond when suddenly a charming voice interrupted them.
"Miss Shangguan, Miss Cheng." The two turned to see the speaker and were momentarily stunned. Yun Yun had already changed out of her costume and was wearing a purple-red long dress, with fiery red fingertips holding a cigarette. She smiled and said, "This is your first time hearing Yunqi perform, isn't it?"
Shangguan Yiting quickly regained her composure and exchanged pleasantries with her. "Indeed. Miss Jin's singing is melodious and enchanting; if you sing every day, we will have to come every day."
"Miss Shangguan is joking," Yun Yun said lightly as she exhaled smoke rings. With one delicate hand holding a crystal goblet, she exuded elegance mixed with allure as her red lips curled into a smile. "Yunqi has passed the time of singing every day; now I focus more on managing Xiangshui Tower. You two should come more often when you have time."
"Of course," Shangguan Yiting nodded.
Yun Yun smiled charmingly and shifted her gaze to Cheng Mo, narrowing her eyes slightly as she said, "Miss Cheng has just arrived in Feng Province not long ago and came to hear Yunqi sing; it truly is an honor for Yunqi."
"Miss Jin overpraises me," Cheng Mo replied calmly, feeling that Jin Yunqi was somewhat strange for coming over to curry favor without any apparent reason; she must have ulterior motives.
Yun Yun smiled lightly. Although this little girl Cheng Mo was young, she had a strong sense of vigilance that made it difficult for her to act quickly. It wasn't a good point of attack; being too close might raise Cheng Mo's suspicions and could backfire. She slightly stood up and said with a smile, "Please excuse me; I still need to toast other guests."
As soon as her figure walked away, Shangguan Yiting withdrew her gaze, sighing at her beauty, which amused Cheng Mo Su a little. If Shangguan Yiting were a man, wouldn't he have instantly fallen under the charm of that golden Yunqi's skirt?
While they were chatting and laughing, Cheng Mo Su's gaze fell upon another figure, and her mood instantly sank. Seeing her expression change, Shangguan Yiting quickly looked in the distance and smiled slightly, "Yuqiao, you’re here too?"
Today, Rong Yuqiao was wearing a light pink Qipao. Her beautiful face had eyes that remained bright and sparkling, with her hair slightly gathered up into the most fashionable bun of the moment. Her light pink lips radiated a dazzling luster.
"Sister Yiting, Miss Cheng, are you here to see Miss Jin's performance? What a coincidence." She smiled charmingly, a mix of cuteness and curiosity.
"Yes, even I can't help but admire Miss Jin's beauty. No wonder so many young masters have fallen under her charm," Shangguan Yiting teased.
"Isn't that right? Even Lin Ge is no exception." Rong Yuqiao pouted, looking displeased.
Both Cheng Mo Su and Shangguan Yiting were taken aback. Shangguan Yiting glanced at Cheng Mo Su's suddenly silent face and hurriedly asked, "What’s going on?"
"What else could it be? At my dad's department store opening last time, they invited Lin Ge and also invited Miss Jin. As a result, that day I ran into Lin Ge upstairs holding Miss Jin; she wasn't wearing anything but wrapped in a thin bedsheet," Rong Yuqiao said, growing more agitated as she spoke.
"Impossible! Lin would never do such a thing," Shangguan Yiting quickly denied, subconsciously glancing at the pale-faced Cheng Mo Su beside her.
"What's impossible about it? Miss Jin's beauty makes every woman envious; let alone men," Rong Yuqiao argued, then looked at Cheng Mo Su with pity. "Miss Cheng, I used to feel jealous of you, but now we are both in the same boat."
