"Young Marshal, Miss Cheng has been running around tirelessly, worrying and working hard. Coupled with irregular sleep and diet, and not adapting to the local environment, she has already contracted a cold. If her high fever does not subside in a few days, it may turn into pneumonia, which will be difficult to treat." The German doctor finished his diagnosis and wrote down the results on paper. He spoke calmly, but Shangguan Shaoyi felt a surge of anxiety.
Beside him, Shangguan Yiting was also anxious, stamping her feet and grabbing the doctor, asking, "What should we do now? Doctor, please use medication—use the best and most expensive ones. Just make sure Mo Su gets better."
"Miss Shangguan, I can only say I will do my best to treat her. Whether the fever subsides or whether she recovers depends on the patient's own will and immunity," the German doctor said without looking up, continuing to write vigorously.
"What nonsense are you talking about! You must cure her!" Shangguan Shaoyi grabbed the doctor's collar, his bloodshot eyes looking exceptionally terrifying. "If you can't cure her, don't expect to live!" He slammed his gun onto the table, his gaze fixed on the doctor.
"You can kill me if you want, but I still say that everything depends on the patient's own fate," the doctor replied unhurriedly. Shangguan Shaoyi realized he was letting his impatience get the better of him and was misdirecting his anger. He felt helpless as he twitched his brow, standing by and watching Cheng Mo suffer; he wished he could take her illness upon himself.
Just as Shangguan Yiting was about to mediate between them, she heard Cheng Mo mumbling something behind her. Shangguan Shaoyi immediately rushed to her side and held her hand. Her hand was soft and weak; he couldn't hold it tightly and could only gently place it in his palm. He reached out to touch her forehead, which felt as hot as boiling water. Something inside him sank as he tightened his grip on her hand.
"Young Marshal, I am going to give Miss Cheng an injection to reduce her fever now." The doctor sat down and saw that Shangguan Shaoyi was standing still beside her, holding her hand tightly. He urged again, "Please step aside; I can't administer the injection like this."
As if waking from a dream, Shangguan Shaoyi came back to his senses and said, "Be gentle; she is afraid of pain."
She had already fainted; how could she feel pain? The doctor thought this but did not say it aloud. He merely nodded silently and administered the injection. When Shangguan Shaoyi saw beads of sweat forming on Cheng Mo's forehead and her beautiful brows furrowing together, his heart twisted in anguish.
"Shaoyi..." He heard her clearly murmuring his name. Although her words were becoming indistinct, he could still make it out.
"I'm here." He moved closer and grasped her hand. He had never seen her so fragile and helpless before; tears slowly flowed from her tightly closed eyes. Her usually vibrant rose-colored lips were cracked due to the high fever, pale as paper. She writhed in discomfort, beads of sweat increasingly dotting her forehead as if she were shattering apart.
Seeing Shangguan Shaoyi in such a state, the doctor figured that any instructions he gave would not be absorbed by him at this moment. So he walked over to Shangguan Yiting, saying, "Miss Shangguan, I just hung an IV for Miss Cheng to reduce her fever. Now go get some fever-reducing medicine. This medicine is two pills each time, three times a day. If Miss Cheng has a good constitution, she may wake up in three days."
"Yes, I remember. Thank you for your trouble." Shangguan Yiting nodded in gratitude and personally escorted the doctor out before turning back. Shangguan Shaoyi remained in the same position, sitting motionless on the edge of the bed, holding Cheng Mo Su's hand that was not connected to an IV, his eyes filled with endless worry and heartache. She quietly watched her brother; it was the first time she had seen panic and helplessness on his face. He was so concerned about Mo Su, and the cold light that usually resided in his eyes had been replaced by deep pain and anguish. Mo Su was truly important to him...
A ringing sound came from outside the door, and Shangguan Yiting hurried over. When she opened the door, it was Shen Deputy Officer, whom she hadn't seen in a long time. Before they could catch up, Shen Mingliang rushed in and asked, "Where is the Young Commander? Is he home? There are many matters in the military camp that need his attention!"
Shangguan Yiting was startled; she then remembered they had just taken Fengtian, and Lin Hongyao still had considerable influence in the Northeast. However, given the current situation, how could her brother focus on reclaiming other lost territories? She led Shen Mingliang to the doorway of the room and pointed at Cheng Mo Su lying on the bed. "Mo Su is very ill; he probably can't leave for a while. Shen Deputy Officer, is the military situation really that urgent? Can't it wait a bit..." As she spoke, her heart sank; as the daughter of a tiger general, although she had never been on the battlefield, she understood that military operations could not afford delays.
Seeing that she understood, Shen Mingliang stopped saying more and stood straight in front of Shangguan Shaoyi, saluting sharply. "Young Commander! The troops are ready! Waiting for your orders!" Shangguan Shaoyi seemed not to hear him at all, his gaze fixed on Cheng Mo Su's pale face. Shen Mingliang had to raise his voice to repeat himself. Only then did Shangguan Shaoyi turn his face; his pallor startled Shen Mingliang. His bloodshot eyes were dull and lifeless, as if his head weighed a thousand pounds.
"Young Commander..." Shen Mingliang called out worriedly. Shangguan Shaoyi tightly closed his eyes and rubbed his temples to dispel the buzzing sound in his ears like mosquitoes. When he opened his eyes again, he returned to normal. He struggled to support himself and said sharply, "I understand. You go back first; I will return to the military camp shortly."
Shen Mingliang wanted to say something else, but Shangguan Yiting quickly pulled him aside and shook her head. Shen Mingliang sighed helplessly and left first.
Cheng Mo Su still lay on the bed, occasionally mumbling incoherently but showing no signs of waking up. Her face was so pale it almost matched the color of the sheets; her hair was stuck to her forehead with fine sweat, her consciousness drifting far away. Her lips moved slightly, producing a voice as faint as a mosquito's buzz. Shangguan Shaoyi leaned closer and heard her calling out, "It hurts."
His eyes tightly shut again, twitching slightly; it felt as if his heart was bleeding. He touched her forehead and leaned down beside her ear to say softly, "It will be fine soon; I’m here with you; don’t be afraid." He held her hand tightly, showing no signs of wanting to leave her side.
Shangguan Yiting steeled herself; although her voice was soft, it carried emotion in the quiet room. "Lin, you should go to the military camp now; I will take care of Mo Su. Don’t worry; I will keep a close watch on her without blinking until she wakes up."
Shangguan Shaoyi did not look at his sister; his intense and deep gaze remained fixed on the sleeping Cheng Mo Su. This made Shangguan Yiting anxious; she reached out and grabbed Shangguan Shaoyi's shoulder. "Did you hear? Thousands of soldiers in the military camp are waiting for you! Weigh what is important!"
Shangguan Shaoyi's eyelids twitched; he stood up straight with an imposing demeanor. "Sister," he spoke quietly, his gaze lingering reluctantly on Cheng Mo Su. "I want Mo Su to wake up and see me."
"But you can't ignore those soldiers..."
"I know." He coldly interrupted her, his gaze resolute and fierce, "The German doctor just said that Mo Su won't wake up for at least three days. During these three days, I will attack Lin Hongyao's stronghold and capture him alive!"
Three days... Shangguan Yiting was taken aback; it sounded extremely unlikely, but her brother was someone who kept his word. A smile appeared on her face, "This is our Shangguan Lin. Don't worry, I'll take care of Mo Su during these three days. She will definitely be fine. When you come back in three days, the first thing she sees when she wakes up will be you."
