"From now on, you are not allowed to do such dangerous things again. You must remember that I will always protect you." Although there was no expression on Shangguan Shaoyi's face, his hand was tightly gripping Cheng Mo Su's. Cheng Mo Su looked up at him, her heart warming, and she silently nodded in response. She felt quite lucky; just moments ago, when Zhang Zhiqi and Shaofeng were dueling, the bullet aimed at her had been a blank. At the critical moment, Shangguan Shaoyi seized the opportunity and swiftly took down Zhang Zhiqi, saving her.
"Where are we going?" she asked softly.
"To my home," Shangguan Shaoyi replied with a hint of a smile. Cheng Mo Su recalled that he had mentioned having an older sister, which made her feel a bit nervous. It seemed that Shangguan Shaoyi could easily see through her thoughts; he gently ruffled her hair and said, "Don't worry, my sister will like you very much."
At the Shangguan Residence, the grandeur was overwhelming. Rows of stone railings covered in snow stretched into the distance, adorned with intricate dragon carvings and stone lions. Various colorful lanterns with different patterns hung above. As they entered the long corridor and turned a corner, they finally stepped into the main hall. Contrary to what Cheng Mo Su had imagined, the hall was not bright as day but rather shrouded in darkness, giving the entire house a desolate and eerie atmosphere. Shangguan Shaoyi reached out to turn on the light switch, and an array of crystal chandeliers lit up simultaneously, momentarily blinding them. Cheng Mo Su squinted slightly until she adjusted to the brightness.
Shangguan Shaoyi led Cheng Mo Su further inside to a room with a half-closed screen door. Inside, they heard a melodious yet forceful female voice saying, "I told you! I won't eat anything, and I won't write letters to help you find my brother. You can starve me; I want to see how long you can keep me locked up!"
"How much longer do you plan to stay in there?" Shangguan Shaoyi asked with a smirk. Cheng Mo Su peeked inside and saw a woman in a bright red Qipao staring in disbelief as she turned around. Tears unexpectedly streamed down her face as she struggled to believe what she was seeing. Shangguan Shaoyi walked over with a smile of joy from their reunion, took her hand gently, and whispered, "Sister, I'm back."
"Ling..." The woman hugged him tightly with all her strength. "Am I... dreaming? Oh God, if this is a dream, please let me never wake up!"
"It's not a dream; it's me. I'm back." Shangguan Shaoyi patted her shoulder and pulled her up, bringing Cheng Mo Su in front of her. Cheng Mo Su gazed at her intently; the woman bore a resemblance to Shangguan Shaoyi—about seventy percent alike—with an inherent nobility in her features. The bright red Qipao accentuated her graceful figure, and she wore a diamond-studded brooch on her white fur collar. Her face was exquisite and elegant but also carried an air of heroism; it was clear she was the daughter of a fierce general.
"Mo Su, this is my sister, Shangguan Yiting," Shangguan Shaoyi introduced. "This is Miss Cheng from Shanghai, Cheng Mo Su."
"Oh?" Shangguan Yiting smiled teasingly. It was indeed the first time her brother brought a girl home; it showed how special Cheng Mo Su was in his heart. "Miss Cheng, nice to meet you."
"Miss Shangguan, nice to meet you," Cheng Mo Su replied as she shook hands with her. Shangguan Yiting chuckled lightly. "So little Ling has finally returned; this means that Fengtian has once again returned to our Shangguan Family." Seeing Shangguan Shaoyi nodding with a smile made her expression even more charming. "Not only that but this time he has brought back such a beautiful sister-in-law! Just a few days ago I was complaining about being lonely; today I suddenly have reason to smile—it’s truly amusing! Miss Cheng, don’t you think so?"
Cheng Mo Su blushed and tugged at Shangguan Shaoyi's sleeve for help. Understanding her cue, Shangguan Shaoyi smiled knowingly and interrupted his sister's enthusiastic chatter. "Sister, don't tease Mo Su; she's shy and can't handle your jokes."
"Little brat, do you mean to say I have thick skin?" Shangguan Yiting pretended to twist Shangguan Shaoyi's ear, causing Cheng Mo Su to laugh from the side, her bright eyes shimmering like ripples, the lines of her rose-colored lips slightly raised. Shangguan Yiting held her hand, her smile delicate and clear, "Miss Cheng, how come you're laughing along? Today I truly witnessed what it means to breathe through the same nostril."
"Miss Shangguan..." Cheng Mo Su's face turned red again. Shangguan Shaoyi was usually taciturn; she had thought his sister would be a cold and beautiful woman, but unexpectedly, she was so talkative and skilled at teasing, surpassing even Huang Wei.
"Alright, alright." Shangguan Yiting smiled charmingly and knew when to stop. "Sister, don't take offense. I've been cooped up for too long. Before Xiao Lin returned, we had heavy guards watching over the Shangguan residence. The ones who came to talk to me were all stern military officers. Now that I've seen such a beautiful sister today, I can't help but chat away."
Shangguan Shaoyi's expression turned serious, his sword-like brows furrowing tightly. "Sister, they didn't make things difficult for you, did they?"
"Of course they did." Shangguan Yiting snorted coldly. "After Father passed away, you disappeared without a trace. They wanted me to write to you to lure you out. They are really foolish; how could I know where you are? Even if I did, do they think I would tell them? However..." She changed the subject and put on a charming smile again. "These people are all old subordinates of Dad; they were just temporarily taken under Lin Hongyao's command. They may not be loyal in heart but didn't use severe torture on me—just house arrest and some pretense of questioning."
That's good... Shangguan Shaoyi nodded. If they dared to use any torture on his sister, he would ensure they all met a terrible end! Shangguan Yiting smiled seductively, her gaze flowing between the two of them, her red lips curling into an ambiguous arc. "But you, Xiao Lin, do tell me where you've been all this time. I thought you were enduring hardships in silence, but it turns out you've returned with a beauty."
Someone who had been locked up for so long was indeed talkative. Shangguan Shaoyi shook his head helplessly and briefly recounted what had happened. Shangguan Yiting listened as if it were a story, sometimes happy for them and sometimes worried for them. When she heard that Cheng Mo Su risked her life for Shangguan Shaoyi yesterday, she couldn't help but shed tears.
"Mo Su, you are truly a good girl." She held Cheng Mo Su's hand tightly and said sincerely, "It's fortunate that you can consider my brother so much. He has been trained by Father to be taciturn since childhood; he hides all his suffering and pain in his heart. I'm really afraid he might get sick one day from holding it all in. Thankfully you appeared and did so much for him; now when I see him, I feel like he has truly become someone."
"What's that supposed to mean? Was I a ghost before?" Shangguan Shaoyi complained.
"You aren't much different from a ghost." Shangguan Yiting retorted playfully while still holding onto Cheng Mo Su tightly. "Mo Su, my brother is stubborn; once he sets his mind on something, he will go down that path no matter what—even if he hits a wall, he won't turn back. Since he has chosen you, he will treat you well."
Cheng Mo Su nodded with a warm smile; she had originally worried that Shaoyi's sister might not like her, but now it seemed that concern was unnecessary. Shangguan Yiting stacked their hands together and said with a smile: "Mo Su, don't call me Miss Shangguan anymore; we will be family sooner or later. Just like Lin does, call me sister."
"How can I do that?" Cheng Mo Su's face burned fiercely; she didn't mind it too much and treated it as a normal reaction.
"Since Sister asked you to call her that, just go ahead." Shangguan Shaoyi had a light smile on his face that was hard to notice unless one looked closely. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, "You will have to change how you address her sooner or later, so it’s better to do it now to avoid trouble later."
Cheng Mo's face turned even redder. She shot him a glare but found that his gaze was not on her; he merely wore a calm smile at the corner of his mouth.
Shangguan Yiting glanced at the two of them and playfully covered her red lips with her delicate hand, saying, "Oh, you two should be mindful of those around you while flirting." Seeing that the redness on Cheng Mo's face had reached her ears, she stopped teasing and looked seriously at Cheng Mo. It was then that she heard Cheng Mo softly call out, "Sister."
"Hey," she replied with a smile. However, Cheng Mo suddenly felt darkness clouding her vision, dizziness overwhelming her, and her body felt light as if she could not stand. She fell straight backward.
"Mo Su!" In front of her was Shaoyi's worried expression, but before she could respond to him, she fainted heavily.
