Saying she wasn't scared was a lie; the horse looked as if it were dead at first glance. She had never seen a corpse before and couldn't handle it, turning her head to gag. Shaoyi quickly supported her, gently patting her back to help her breathe easier. She slightly turned her face, and her usually flawless complexion had turned a pale white like paper. He felt a pang in his heart, holding her hand to convey some warmth.
"I'll go see what's going on. You should go back to your room and rest for a while."
Cheng Mosu nodded. It seemed that she would only cause trouble here, and Shaoyi was not at ease letting her return alone. He accompanied her back before turning around to head back.
He approached the horse and reached out to check its breathing; it was still there but very weak. He looked up at the stars and realized he would have to wait until tomorrow to find a doctor.
The next morning, Cheng Mosu ordered Liu Butler to go out and fetch a doctor. Liu Butler felt puzzled; the young lady looked refreshed and had surprisingly gone to bed early and risen early, showing no signs of discomfort. However, he didn't dare ask too many questions and drove off to invite the German doctor, Mark. Mark had been treating Cheng Residence for a long time and could be considered the family’s dedicated physician.
"Miss Cheng, hello," he said, shaking hands with Cheng Mosu. "Where do you feel unwell?"
Cheng Mosu smiled gracefully, "It's not me; it's a horse I keep in the backyard. It fainted. Can Dr. Mark take a look at it?"
Mark couldn't help but chuckle inwardly, "I only treat human illnesses; for animals, you should find a veterinarian. Why would you think of me?"
"But I don't know any other doctors. Dr. Mark has been treating our family since I can remember; in terms of medical ethics and skill, you are definitely among the best. Please help me take a look," Cheng Mosu said calmly.
Mark sighed, "Well... there's a saying in China that each profession has its own expertise; I haven't studied veterinary medicine... But since you trust me so much, I'll give it a try." He followed Liu Butler and Cheng Mosu to the backyard, where Shaoyi was already waiting. When he turned his face and saw Cheng Mosu's delicate figure, his originally cold gaze softened considerably.
"Hello," Shaoyi said as he shook hands with Mark and explained the situation. Mark appeared to understand and began his examination slowly. Cheng Mosu quietly stepped closer to Shaoyi; the playful breeze brushed her sleeve against his, and she lowered her eyes with a gentle smile.
So Shaoyi has quite a good relationship with the young lady? Liu Butler shot Shaoyi a fierce glare but saw that Shaoyi ignored him and walked over to check on Mark instead. Mark patted the horse and straightened up, saying, "Miss Cheng, don't worry; this horse is fine. It just accidentally ingested something like knockout drug and has fainted. It will recover after some time."
Knockout Drug?!
The three people present were all taken aback. Liu Butler suddenly felt guilty; he had instructed his son to dispose of the remaining Knockout Drug. Could that foolish son of his have fed it to the horses?! He instinctively glanced at Shaoyi, who had a particularly dark expression, his cold gaze fixed on Liu Butler like a predator watching its prey, sending a chill of fear deep into Liu Butler's bones.
It must be a psychological effect; even if Shaoyi was extraordinarily capable, he couldn't possibly deduce that it was him who was responsible. Liu Butler kept reassuring himself, trying to calm his emotions.
“Uncle Liu, could you go see off Dr. Mark?” Hearing Cheng Mosu's voice pulled Liu Butler back to reality. He noticed Cheng Mosu looking at him in confusion. “What’s wrong? I called you several times just now. Uncle Liu, are you feeling unwell? Should we ask Dr. Mark to take a look at you?”
“No, no!” Liu Butler hurriedly waved his hand. “I’ll go see off Dr. Mark right away…” He forced a smile and, out of the corner of his eye, glanced at Shaoyi. Shaoyi continued to stare at him intently, his brows knitted with an icy demeanor that seemed to freeze Liu Butler in place. Not daring to look again, he hurried off to see Dr. Mark.
“Shaoyi, why do you think the horse would eat something like Knockout Drug?” Cheng Mosu asked in confusion.
Shaoyi shook his head; he couldn't understand either. Although Liu Butler had acted strangely earlier, there was no reason for him to feed the horses Knockout Drug. He looked at Cheng Mosu, who appeared worried, and spoke to comfort her: “It’s fine; it might just be an accidental ingestion.” Cheng Mosu smiled gently at him, her expression illuminated by the winter sunlight, making her seem transparent and beautiful. She understood that nothing happens by chance; behind every coincidence lies countless inevitabilities. She couldn't fathom what was truly happening but felt touched by his attitude—he didn't want her to worry, which was why he comforted her.
After pondering for a while without any clues, Shaoyi lowered his gaze to look at Cheng Mosu. She still wore a soft smile, but her delicate hands were intertwined, betraying her anxiety. He felt a pang in his heart and said solemnly, “Leave this matter to me; don’t think too much about it.”
A gentle breeze brushed past them, making her seem almost transparent as if she might be blown away by the wind. The surroundings suddenly blurred into indistinct shadows, leaving only her figure clear before him. He vowed silently in his heart that he would protect her—he would definitely do so!
After seeing off Dr. Mark, Liu Butler hurriedly found his useless son and began scolding him furiously. “You good-for-nothing! I told you to dispose of the leftover liquid, and instead you fed it to the horses! Miss and that Shaoyi discovered it this morning!”
Liu Wentang was startled; had they been discovered by Shaoyi!? He had suffered enough losses at the hands of Shaoyi, harboring deep resentment towards him. His emotions were tumultuous at the moment, but he maintained a calm facade. “Dad, don’t panic; Shaoyi is human, not a god; he won’t connect this incident to us!”
“Forget it!” Liu Butler waved his hand helplessly. “Did anyone see you that day?”
"No." Liu Wen Tang replied impatiently, his heart suddenly tightening. "No, wait... someone might have seen it... I heard footsteps, and in my panic, I just splashed that residue and ran away." Upon hearing this, the steward's face turned ashen, and he could only sigh at having such an incompetent son. With things having come to this point, what could be done? He thought for a moment; the backyard was usually unoccupied, specifically cleaned out for keeping horses, so the only person who could be staying there was the new stable boy that Shaoyi had hired.
"I'll go back now and find some excuse to fire that stable boy. You stay at home for the next few days and don't cause me any more trouble!" the steward said, filled with frustration.
The cold wind howled, and heavy snow fell. On this day, Shanghai was suddenly blanketed in a thick layer of snow. Although it was nothing compared to the snowflakes in the north, it was indeed a rare sight for Shanghai. The cold enveloped the pedestrians on the street; women shivered with chattering lips yet still moved forward gracefully, while men trembled with their arms but continued to joke and laugh. The only difference was the steward, who walked among these people. He looked up at the falling snowflakes and felt his heart racing faster, with worry and anxiety growing stronger.
