Cheng Mo turned on the light, turned her head, and stared intently at the man. His gaze was cold and sharp, his figure tall and handsome, with sword-like eyebrows and a straight nose. The riding outfit he wore accentuated his calm demeanor, yet also exuded an air of dominance that seemed to overlook the world. His eyes, vast like the sky, deep like the sea, and cold like ice, also fixed their gaze on her. After a moment, he spoke, "You must be Miss Cheng Mo."
"Who are you?" She instinctively felt he wasn't a bad person; otherwise, he would have acted earlier. Cheng Mo furrowed her beautiful brows.
He pulled out a letter from his sleeve and handed it to Cheng Mo. She gently lifted the letter, and the scent of ink slowly wafted between them. Her black-and-white eyes blinked rhythmically, while her long eyelashes fluttered gracefully. After reading it, she nodded slightly, "So you are a distant relative of Brother Zuo Wei, looking to find a position in the household." She let out a soft sigh, a smile tugging at her lips. "Why didn't you come in through the front door? Steward Liu would have arranged everything."
He continued speaking, his voice devoid of any emotional fluctuation. "I did go there; Steward Liu seems to not believe me." Cheng Mo looked down at the letter again; her brows remained calm. Brother Zuo Wei's handwriting was very distinctive—flowing like clouds yet meticulously crafted. She had tried to imitate it since childhood but had never quite grasped its essence. Therefore, she was certain this was Brother Zuo Wei's own writing.
"I only need to believe it myself," she asked gently with a smile, "What is your name?"
The man paused for a moment before answering without any pretense or flattery. "Shaoyi."
Cheng Mo's dark eyes flickered as if she were probing him; indeed, his demeanor was rare in this world. However, she was unaware that he was also observing her because her calmness was unparalleled.
Cheng Mo rang a bell, and Steward Liu immediately appeared before her. Upon seeing Shaoyi, Steward Liu was taken aback, his brows twitching in surprise. "Miss... how did he get here?!"
"This is a distant relative of Brother Zuo Wei who has come to seek employment in our household. Why did you chase him away without notifying me? How am I supposed to explain this to Brother Zuo Wei?" She changed from her usual gentle demeanor to a stern tone that even Steward Liu found hard to counter.
In truth, Steward Liu hadn't thought much about it; he simply didn't want anyone competing with his nephew for a position. He glared at the calm Shaoyi beside him, wondering how he had slipped into the young lady's room!
"Miss... I thought he was a fraud, so..."
Cheng Mo's delicate brows furrowed slightly as she spoke softly, "This is undoubtedly Brother Zuo Wei's handwriting. Steward Liu, do you only allow your relatives and friends to seek positions?"
"Miss, I... I didn't mean it that way, I just..."
"That's enough." Cheng Mo waved her sleeve. "Uncle Liu, take him down and arrange a position for him. Your relative will also be arranged tomorrow; do you think that works?" Her Water Eyes slightly shifted, and her furrowed brow gradually relaxed. "By the way, shouldn't we replace the guards at our house? Today it was Shaoyi who came; what if a thief breaks in another day? How should I handle that?"
Butler Liu quickly put on a smile. "Yes! Miss, I will replace those useless guards tomorrow! However... the servants' quarters are full, and there's no place for him to stay."
Cheng Mo gently turned her head, her black hair cascading down to her waist, her figure graceful and elegant. "I remember there's an unused courtyard in the garden; let him stay there for now, and we can discuss it later."
Butler Liu responded and secretly wiped the sweat from his palms. Although he had watched this young lady grow up, sometimes she was even more difficult to deal with than the master. He hurriedly led Shaoyi out, and as soon as he closed the door behind them, his expression changed completely. He pointed imperiously and asked, "Hey, what's your name?!"
Shaoyi walked steadily alongside him. Hearing that tone, a momentary displeasure flashed across his face but was quickly suppressed, though it still carried a hint of coldness. "Shaoyi."
Butler Liu shrugged and smiled. "That's a nice name, but it lacks a surname. I wonder where you're from..." Although Butler Liu didn't finish his sentence, he understood the implication. His brows furrowed tightly as an oppressive chill emanated from him but vanished just as quickly.
After a long walk, they finally arrived at the courtyard. Butler Liu casually pointed. "You’ll stay there. If you have any questions in the future, just ask me. I'm the butler of Cheng Residence; Cheng Xingchang is my distant relative. No one in the Shanghai Concession doesn't know me..." Before he could finish his sentence, Shaoyi brushed past him with steady steps, exuding an intimidating presence. Butler Liu couldn't help but feel disgusted; not a single servant would dare to offend him, yet this Shaoyi not only refused to curry favor but also carried an air of arrogance that irritated him immensely.
The night had deepened slowly, with only a few stars dancing under the moonlight. Shaoyi stood by the window, realizing what it meant to be utterly alone and isolated. His cold gaze fixed on one direction as he clenched his fists tightly, causing his fingertips to break skin and blood to trickle down his strong palm, pooling on the wooden floor in a scene of desolation. After a long while, he finally rose to turn off the light.
In the darkness, he was unaware that Butler Liu had already found two thugs in the house to teach him a lesson.
He lay slightly on his side and had not yet settled down when rustling sounds of clothing reached his ears. Half-closed Eyes suddenly opened wide with an aura of coldness rising within him. The two thugs lunged at him; he swiftly turned around to evade their strikes and executed a mid-air flip with increasing sharpness in his gaze. He grabbed one thug's shoulder and kicked the other down to the ground.
"Who are you?" he said coldly, his white riding outfit showing no signs of disarray as the two thugs lay incapacitated on the floor. In the darkness, only his Black Eyes reflected glimmers of cold light; the room was eerily silent as if even breathing had ceased. Shaoyi bound both thugs with rope; they struggled helplessly like fish on a chopping board, at his mercy for slaughter.
He dragged the two people out of the room, and under the dim moonlight, he coldly looked at their pale faces, which were already terrified. They also stared at him, their eyes filled with murderous intent and a chilling aura. "I... I'm sorry... It's Butler Liu... He made us..." one of them stammered.
Shaoyi appeared to understand everything, skillfully leading the two through the maze-like courtyard, corridors, and hall, ultimately dropping them off at the door of Butler Liu's room. He stuffed cloth into their mouths and turned away without any emotion.
The mornings at Cheng Residence were not the busiest times since the young lady usually slept until around eleven or twelve. Of course, if she had an appointment, she would wake up early, but that would only be around ten. Now that Cheng Xingzhang was not home, Butler Liu lazily slept until nine-thirty before reluctantly opening his door. Still groggy from sleep, he saw two people tied up at his doorstep, and any remnants of drowsiness were instantly thrown out the window. "What... what is going on?!"
He hurriedly removed the cloth from their mouths.
"Butler Liu! We... we didn't touch Shaoyi! He is just too terrifying!" To be precise, they hadn't even laid a finger on Shaoyi before he subdued them. Butler Liu was now anxious, wanting to quickly untie them. Fortunately, he had instructed the servants not to pass by his room in the morning; otherwise, if the young lady found out about this, it would be disastrous.
"You two fools!" Butler Liu scolded angrily. He estimated the time; the young lady should still be asleep. If he acted quickly, he could cover this up. But how did Shaoyi tie them up like this? It was so tight that he couldn't untie it! The clock's hands slowly pointed to ten o'clock, and as Butler Liu grew more anxious inside, his hands became less effective. He could only watch helplessly as time ticked away. "Wait here! Don't make a sound; I'll go get some scissors."
Before he could move, a clear voice echoed down the long corridor. "Butler Liu, where are you? The young lady is getting up for breakfast." Butler Liu was startled and didn't have time to respond; he recognized that it was the voice of the young lady's personal maid, Fengyin.
A light yet graceful set of footsteps approached from afar, accompanied by a faint fragrance in the air. Cheng Mo's originally smiling face gradually shifted to one of curiosity as her Water Eyes drifted over to the two bound individuals and froze on them. "Uncle Liu, what is going on?"
