"Madam Chen, hello." I slightly bowed and extended my hand.
"Young Master Ye, hello." Madam Chen reached out her hand and gently shook mine.
"Are you here to attend the International Ball, Master Ye?" Madam Chen looked at me with a smile on her face.
"Yes, I heard this ball is a grand event in Haining, so I came to see for myself," I replied with a smile.
"Master Ye is a skilled dancer?" Madam Chen asked curiously.
"Oh no, I just have a bit of interest in dancing; I wouldn't call myself skilled," I humbly responded.
"Master Ye is being modest. A handsome young man like you must be an expert on the dance floor," Madam Chen complimented.
"You flatter me, Madam Chen. I'm just an ordinary man and wouldn't dare to claim expertise," I said with a smile, responding humbly.
"Master Ye is too modest. A handsome young man like you must have many admirers among the ladies," Madam Chen said with a laugh.
"Madam Chen is joking. A person like me, being ordinary, could hardly catch the attention of the ladies," I replied with a smile.
"If a handsome guy like Master Ye is considered ordinary, then there are hardly any ordinary people in Haining," Madam Chen laughed.
"Madam Chen, you're too kind. I'm just a scholar who has recently returned to the country and still have much to learn. I hope you will guide me," I said politely.
"Master Ye, you are too modest. Young talents like you are exactly what we need in Xiazhu. If you ever need my assistance, feel free to reach out," Mrs. Chen readily agreed.
"Thank you very much, Mrs. Chen," I replied with a smile.
"Master Ye, there will be many young ladies attending the ball tonight, so make sure to perform well," Mrs. Chen said with a smile.
"Then I will take your words to heart and hope to catch a glimpse of the young ladies' elegance," I responded with a smile.
"Master Ye, we shall take our leave now," Mrs. Chen said with a smile.
"Safe travels, Mrs. Chen," I smiled as I bid her farewell.
Gao Fen watched Mrs. Chen's departing figure with a complex expression on his face.
"Mr. Gao, is Mrs. Chen quite famous?" I asked curiously.
"Master Ye, Mrs. Chen is quite the celebrity in Haining, known as 'Madam Ziweifu.' Her father is the wealthiest man in Ningnan County, Mr. Chen Jinhui, and her mother is the daughter of the Golden Leaf Hall in Minzhou," Gao Fen explained.
"How did she become a widow?" I inquired.
"Mrs. Chen was originally betrothed to Young Master Shen Yousan from the Shen family, but unfortunately, Mr. Shen drowned during an outing. To honor her engagement, Mrs. Chen willingly married Mr. Shen's spirit, and as a result, the Shen family specially provided her with a large courtyard in Haining," Gao Fen said.
"So does that mean she is considered part of the Shen family?" I asked.
"That's right, but not entirely. Since Mr.Shen has passed away, Madame Chen has become a widow. The Shen Family gifted her the villa as a token of gratitude, and she settled in Haining, becoming a socialite," Gao Fen explained.
"I see," I said, realizing the situation.
"This Madame Chen is not only a celebrity in Haining but also wealthy, owning numerous properties and assets. She is kind-hearted and charitable, enjoying a great reputation in Haining," Gao Fen continued.
"No wonder she is so beautiful; it turns out she is a well-bred lady," I remarked in admiration.
"Madame Chen is not only beautiful but also intelligent. She has many suitors in Haining, but she keeps her distance from everyone, never allowing anyone to get too close," Gao Fen said.
