He continued, "If you want to sift through the dung on his territory, you have to pay him every month. By the way, sir, you may not know this, but in a region, only one person can collect the dung; no one else is allowed to. If someone else tries to collect it, they will break the rules and could be killed. In the past, there were only a few major 'Manure Tyrants' in Xiazhu, but now there are many more, and it's a complete mess."
"What about the 'Dung Boss'?" I thought; it was disgusting but also quite valuable.
"Sir, the 'Dung Boss' is wealthy and powerful. They contract with the authorities for all the dung in the city and then subcontract it to the 'Manure Tyrants', just sitting back and collecting money."
"Don't these dung workers have any organization?" I wondered; where there is exploitation, there will be resistance.
"Yes, they formed a 'Feces Workers' Association' specifically to fight against the 'Manure Tyrants' and 'Dung Bosses'. Sometimes they even clash with farmers, but it doesn't do much good; they're mostly honest people."
"Besides dung collection, what other bullies are there?" I thought; this is what really affects people's lives.
"Sir, there are plenty. There are 'Gambling Tyrants' running casinos, 'Smoke Tyrants' with tobacco stalls, 'Vegetable Tyrants' selling produce, and then there are 'Local Tyrants', 'Police Tyrants', and 'Soup Tyrants'; there are so many it's hard to count."
"Oh, tell me how they make their money?"
"Sir, some of these people are from the underworld, some from legitimate businesses, and some operate in both realms. They either collect protection fees, take cuts from deals, or engage in forced buying and selling; they all bully the poor."
"Are there any 'Human Tyrants' here?" I thought; those would be the worst bullies.
"You're right, sir. There are human traffickers here who sell poor people's children into slavery in foreign lands. There are also pimps who lure women from Xiazhu into becoming prostitutes abroad; once they go, they never come back—most end up abused and dead."
As I sat in the carriage looking at the alleys by the roadside, I suddenly felt a pang of anxiety. These alleys were like the country's innards—dirty, rotten, and reeking of foulness. This country has lost all hope; its people continue to struggle but have no future left.
"The court is incompetent, leading to a decaying national condition, and the people cannot live and work in peace." I sighed.
"Sir, what did you say?" The coachman asked, not hearing me clearly.
"I said, Xiazhu is really filthy!" I replied loudly.
"You're absolutely right, sir! This Xiazhu is nothing but a garbage dump!" The coachman exclaimed, cracking his whip.
"Let's go to Wanbang Restaurant." I suddenly wanted to see the tallest building and get a glimpse of the future of this city and country.
The carriage stopped in front of Wanbang Restaurant. As I got out, I looked at the tallest structure in Xiazhu and couldn't help but marvel at the changes of the times.
"A hundred years, what a transformation!" I murmured to myself at the entrance of Wanbang Restaurant.
"Sir, what are you saying now?" The coachman asked beside me.
"I said goodbye to Xiazhu!" After saying that, I turned and walked into the restaurant.
Back in my room, I found that Yuan Yichang had already delivered the firearms.
There were four Long Muskets, four Short Muskets, two hidden blades, and ten grenades.
I picked up one of the Long Muskets; it was genuinely taken from the Divine Mechanism Camp, not just for show.
"Xiazhu Station This time we really invested a lot!" I skillfully pulled back the gun's bolt and checked the chamber.
Yuan Yichang smiled but did not respond; he was only responsible for logistics and did not participate in the operation.
"Make sure to rest well. We'll act tomorrow night," I said, putting away the firearm and addressing everyone.
