"This journey has been quite thrilling," Old Monster said, stroking his beard.
"It has been a long time since I've had this much fun."
Li Rui shot him a glance but didn't say anything. This guy really seemed indifferent to everything, truly carefree.
Sun was wrapping up the final act. The evening felt just like yesterday, creating an illusion that today was merely a continuation of the past. However, it wasn't; the afterglow cast a halo on the young man's profile. Unbeknownst to him, the boy had begun to shed his youthful innocence, leaving traces of growth behind. Old Monster thought about how their journey so far seemed to consist of either fleeing or fighting; it was hard not to grow up too quickly.
"You," Li Rui suddenly stopped in his tracks and turned around seriously, asking him, "What are the characteristics of the Spirit Stone Abyss?"
Old Monster was puzzled by the sudden question but answered nonetheless, "The Spirit Stone Abyss is essentially a mining tunnel filled with Spirit Stones. As you go deeper into the tunnel, the Spirit Stones become purer."
The Spirit Stone Abyss isn't necessarily a deep chasm or cliff; rather, it refers to the quantity of Spirit Stones that can fill an abyss, hence its name. The outer areas of the tunnel have less Qi and Spirit Stones, while deeper inside, both Qi and Spirit Stones become more abundant, which is better for them.
Moreover, each Spirit Stone Abyss will have a Supreme Spirit Stone Vein at its center, containing the most and purest Qi. A Spirit Stone Abyss will always feature a vein of Spirit Stones at its core, and most importantly, there will be Supreme Spirit Stones within that vein.
Supreme Spirit Stones are extremely precious; an ordinary Cultivator might go their entire life without seeing one because they typically only appear in families of cultivation sects or among wealthy elites.
Spirit Stones are categorized into low-grade Spirit Stones, mid-grade Spirit Stones, high-grade Spirit Stones, and Supreme Spirit Stones.
The conversion between them is straightforward: for example, 1,000 low-grade Spirit Stones equal one mid-grade Spirit Stone; 10,000 mid-grade Spirit Stones equal one high-grade Spirit Stone; and 100,000 high-grade Spirit Stones equal one Supreme Spirit Stone.
The higher the quality of the Spirit Stone, the purer the Qi it contains, making it highly sought after by Cultivators. Even some prominent families rarely possess Supreme Spirit Stones; in summary, the Spirit Stone Abyss is crucial, as are Supreme Spirit Stones and Spirit Stone veins.
In the world of Cultivators, the common currency is Spirit Stones. Generally speaking, Spirit Stones also symbolize a Cultivator's status.
However, locating a Spirit Stone Abyss is exceedingly difficult. Many families have discovered them through fortunate circumstances but lacked the ability to protect them from being plundered. Families have been destroyed; in cultivation, it's always survival of the fittest.
Furthermore, a Spirit Stone Abyss does not necessarily need to grow in red earth; it cannot be found with just the naked eye but requires special Spiritual Artifacts.
"Look, doesn't this seem a bit like a Spirit Stone Abyss?" Li Rui pointed at the ground beneath them.
Old Monster looked at the unremarkable soil beneath his feet and refused to answer. How could a Spirit Stone Abyss possibly exist in such a place?!
Li Rui didn't insist on hearing Old Monster's response either; he squatted down to study it closely. Old Monster found himself bored and muttered to Lightning Weasel, "Does your master want Spirit Stones so badly that he's gone mad? How could there be a Spirit Stone Abyss in such an unremarkable place?"
Lightning Weasel sat obediently with its head tilted as if saying it didn't understand what he was talking about. Its big tail swayed back and forth happily behind it.
Old Monster had never expected that a creature without spiritual intelligence could understand his meaning.
Li Rui gently brushed aside a clump of soil. Although the Spiritual Power was thin, it was still present. He called out to Old Monster: "Look, isn't this the outskirts of the Spirit Stone Abyss?"
Old Monster cautiously touched the soil, feeling the flow of Qi. "Although it's scarce, it still exists."
"So that means..."
"We've struck gold!"
Thinking of this, Old Monster's eyes nearly filled with Spirit Stones, overflowing with excitement. "Let's start digging."
Before Li Rui could finish speaking, he saw Old Monster rubbing his palms together and pulling out a gleaming iron pickaxe, starting to dig vigorously.
Watching from the side, Li Rui broke into a sweat. He could understand the excitement at seeing Spirit Stones, but being this excited was a bit much...
Seeing Old Monster's incredible fighting spirit, Li Rui decided to quietly watch from the side with Lightning Weasel. He felt that if he joined in, it would only lower Old Monster's fighting spirit.
Once Old Monster had dug quite a bit of the tunnel, Li Rui slowly walked over with a serious expression. "Not bad, not bad. We're about to reach the center."
Old Monster wiped away some sweat, while Li Rui looked fresh and clean, which made him feel somewhat unbalanced. "Focus!" Li Rui scolded.
Old Monster, quick-witted as ever, dodged to the side.
Then appeared a beast whose body seemed to be made of glass, reflecting colorful light under the Sun. Naturally, where there were rare treasures, there were also guardian beasts protecting them. It seemed they were in for a tough battle against a formidable opponent.
Consider this: all guardian beasts protecting treasures share characteristics with what they guard. So what is the weakness of the Spirit Stone?
Thick-skinned, hard to hit, and resistant to damage. This was the shared sentiment of Li Rui and Old Monster. When you don't know your opponent's weakness and they are completely unfazed by you, the situation is bound to be grim.
Almost every part of Li Rui's body bore wounds; Old Monster had also lost quite a bit of blood, looking rather worse for wear.
Lightning Weasel was covered in scars as well, while their opponent appeared unharmed—just a bit fatigued after such a long battle where both sides were showing signs of exhaustion.
"We can't win," Old Monster calmly stated at this point.
The moonlight was bright and fireflies danced in the air. If a woman were to pass by here, she would undoubtedly exclaim how beautiful it was.
Unfortunately, none of the people present had the mind to appreciate such beautiful scenery. The guy guarding the Spirit Stone Abyss was still watching them closely. Li Rui and the others dared not make any sudden moves, fearing it would provoke an attack from the other side; after all, they could not afford to waste any energy right now.
"Run," Li Rui gasped, nodding seriously.
"Then I..."
"One."
""
"Run!"
"Where to?!" Li Rui was stunned for a second before fleeing without looking back.
The Lightning Weasel also let out a cry of anger. Can't you just play by the rules?!
The three of them, along with one animal, started running for their lives, gradually leaving the sound of hooves behind them. Only then did they let out a sigh of relief.
