The Crisis of the 2008 Celebration
When the news of the Emperor's serious illness arrived, the air in the entire border region seemed to freeze. I, Zhang Xiaofan, immediately realized that this was not just an illness, but a crisis concerning the safety of the nation.
The three of us rushed to the palace, filled with tension and unease. Upon arriving, we saw the Emperor lying on the bed, his face as pale as paper, his breathing weak, as if the flame of life could extinguish at any moment. I hurried forward and checked his pulse; my heart sank—this was a sign of poisoning!
I furrowed my brows and said in a deep voice, "This poison is very potent; we must detoxify immediately." Liu Piaopiao tightly grasped my hand, her eyes revealing determination and trust. "I have studied detoxification; perhaps I can help." Li Mubai looked around warily. "We need to hurry; the National Master will definitely not let us off easily."
Just as we were acting separately and methodically to provide treatment, the National Master suddenly appeared with a group of people. His laughter echoed in the empty hall, filled with madness and triumph: "Hahaha, you're too late; you have lost!"
The National Master wore a smug and insane expression as he arrogantly declared, "Zhang Xiaofan, no matter how skilled you are in medicine, you cannot save him now. This poison was specially prepared by me; there is no antidote." My heart tightened, but I remained calm on the surface. "National Master, what exactly do you want?"
The National Master laughed maniacally, his laughter filled with a thirst for power and confidence in victory. "Zhang Xiaofan, if you're smart, you should surrender quickly; otherwise, I'll make you regret it!" I stood tall and said, "National Master, dare to touch the Emperor and see what happens!"
Liu Piaopiao also stepped forward, her voice carrying undeniable authority. "National Master, if you still have any conscience left, hand over the antidote." Li Mubai drew his sword and pointed it at the National Master, his eyes flashing with determination and bravery. "National Master, if you don't hand over the antidote, today will be your end!"
The National Master was intimidated by our momentum and took a step back. But at that moment, Liu Piaopiao suddenly shouted, "I found it! This herb can detoxify!" I quickly followed her instructions and gave it to the Emperor. Soon after, the Emperor's complexion began to improve, and his breathing gradually stabilized.
The Emperor slowly opened his eyes; although his voice was weak, it was filled with gratitude and strength. "Thanks to you all, I have been able to regain my life." Seeing that things were going poorly for him, the National Master attempted to flee but was captured by Li Mubai with a single strike.
The Emperor sat up; his voice carried imperial authority and decisiveness. "National Master, your crimes are heinous; I will deal with you according to the law!" The National Master was taken away, and we three let out a sigh of relief. After recovering, the Emperor praised us greatly: I was appointed as Imperial Physician, Liu Piaopiao as Female Imperial Physician, and Li Mubai became the Grand General of National Defense.
However, during the celebration granted by the Emperor after his recovery, our hearts were not completely at ease. Liu Piaopiao wore a light green long dress, beautiful and enchanting; she quietly said to me: "Mr. Zhang, although this place is nice, I still want to travel mountains and rivers with you and heal people." I tightly held her hand and promised: "Piaopiao, once everything is resolved, I will accompany you for a lifetime."
The celebration was halfway through when suddenly news came that the National Master’s subordinates were causing trouble outside. The Emperor's expression darkened, and he ordered us to take immediate action. The three of us quickly gathered soldiers and rushed outside the palace. After a fierce battle, we finally quelled the rebellion. However, this fight made us realize that the National Master’s influence still lingered, and we could not let our guard down. Upon returning to the palace, the Emperor was very pleased with our performance and presented Liu Piaopiao and me with a pair of Dragon and Phoenix Jade Pendants as a testament to our bond.
The Emperor's blessing and the gift of the Dragon and Phoenix Jade Pendants were affirmations of our worth and expectations for us. Holding the pendant, I gazed at Liu Piaopiao and said, “Piaopiao, this pendant is our declaration of love. Li Mubai chuckled from the side, saying, “Looks like I need to find a girlfriend quickly and get myself a pendant too.” The three of us laughed together, but deep down we all understood that while the palace was splendid, it was not our long-term home. In 2009, the Emperor's blessing brought new challenges for us.
On the night of the palace celebration, lights shone brightly, and the entire palace was immersed in joy and harmony. However, beneath this dazzling starlight, I found it hard to relax completely. Seeing this, Li Mubai joked, “Are you two planning to leave me behind to enjoy your own little world?” We exchanged smiles, but amidst our laughter, I could still sense an undercurrent of tension in the air.
Suddenly, a palace maid rushed over in a panic: “Your Majesty! It’s bad! The remnants of the National Master are causing trouble outside; it could lead to disaster!” The Emperor's expression immediately turned serious as he spoke with undeniable authority: “These rebels truly never learn! Zhang Xiaofan, Li Mubai, Liu Piaopiao—immediately take troops to quell this rebellion!”
We sprang into action at once, gathering soldiers and swiftly heading outside. The scene beyond the palace tightened our hearts; flames shot up as the National Master’s subordinates fiercely battled with the guards in chaotic turmoil. Li Mubai took the lead bravely wielding his sword as he charged forward, showcasing his valor as a national protector. Meanwhile, Liu Piaopiao and I calmly directed from behind, using our intellect and strategy to guide the soldiers effectively against enemy attacks.
After an arduous battle, we finally subdued the rebellion. Although victorious, this fight made us acutely aware that the shadow of the National Master still loomed over this land; we must remain vigilant at all times.
Upon returning to the palace, the Emperor praised our performance effusively; his gaze was filled with admiration and gratitude. He personally presented Liu Piaopiao and me with a pair of Dragon and Phoenix Jade Pendants—not only recognizing our achievements but also witnessing our love.
The Emperor said affectionately, "Zhang Xiaofan, Liu Piaopiao, your feelings for each other are admirable. This jade pendant represents my blessing for you both; may you love each other forever and walk hand in hand."
I took the jade pendant and gazed deeply at Liu Piaopiao, my voice trembling slightly, "Piaopiao, this pendant is a token of our love. No matter where we are, it will witness our unchanging vows." Liu Piaopiao's eyes were misty with tears as she tightly grasped my hand and choked out, "Mr. Zhang, as long as you are by my side, I fear nothing."
Li Mubai stood nearby, a hint of envy flashing in his eyes. He smiled and said, "It seems I should also go find my destined one and strive to obtain my own jade pendant soon."
The three of us laughed together again, but we all understood that while the palace was nice, it was not our ultimate home. Our dream was to venture into a broader world, using our medical skills and wisdom to help those in need and to write our own legendary stories. The love between Liu Piaopiao and me would further elevate and solidify during this journey.
Months passed, and the three of us—Zhang Xiaofan, Li Mubai, and Liu Piaopiao—set out on a new journey filled with the Emperor's heartfelt blessings. We explored every corner of that ancient land, from bustling cities to remote villages, from vast grasslands to deep valleys.
