Father Bai is a fan of Dream of the Red Chamber, but the character he admires the most is the minor character Lin Ruhai, who never appears prominently in the story. He appreciates Lin Ruhai's talent, as he was a charming and talented scholar. Unfortunately, his fate was tragic; his only daughter was killed by so-called relatives, and his family fortune was swallowed up, leading to his family's extinction. Father Bai often sighs at how such a capable man could have such poor judgment.
"I got it, Dad. I will definitely complete the task!" Bai Tang replied. Getting Lin Ruhai's calligraphy should be easy.
"Did you bring the camera? Remember to take some pictures of Lin Mei Mei and Bao Jie," White Mother reminded her daughter, forgetting her worries.
"I brought it. Mom, not just pictures of Lin Mei Mei and Bao Jie, but also photos of Three Springs, Jia Baoyu, and Twelve Golden Hairpins. I'll bring them back for you to enjoy!" Bai Tang said, relieved to see her parents' expressions lighten. "I'll be back in a month at most!"
With that, she pressed the button for the first Time-Space Gate and vanished before her parents' astonished eyes.
"This... she just left?" Bai Ma finally found her voice. Although she had heard about her daughter's incredible experiences, witnessing this fantastical scene left both parents shocked, making them feel as if their daughter had transcended the realm of mortals and was no longer just their daughter. Shaking their heads, they dismissed that thought; no matter how extraordinary she became, Bai Tang still carried their bloodline—she was their daughter.
After a whirlwind of motion, Bai Tang steadied herself and opened her eyes to find herself in the same forest where she first arrived in the Red Mansion World. Calculating the time, she realized that while she had spent two months in the modern world, four years had passed in the Red Mansion World. Lin Mei Mei should now be six years old. In the original story, Jia Min passed away when Lin Mei Mei was six; however, after taking Peiyuan Pill to improve her health, Jia Min should be stronger now. Yet, given the inertia of the original plot, unexpected events could still occur! Bai Tang decided to visit Yangzhou to see the Lin family.
Yangzhou City had not changed much since Bai Tang first arrived six years ago; only the wonton stall near the city gate had a new owner—the previous one had made enough money to return to his hometown to farm.
"Boss, one bowl of wontons please!" Bai Tang said as she ate her wontons while watching the bustling crowd at the city gate and listening to gossip from passersby to gather useful information. From these Yangzhou citizens, she learned that Jia Min had given birth to a son after Lin Mei Mei and that he had just turned three years old. However, this child was currently ill, and Lord Lin was spending a fortune seeking renowned doctors for his son's treatment.
Indeed, the plot remained stubborn; in the original story, Jia Min died from grief after losing her son. The difference now was that it was Jia Min's legitimate son—Lin Ruhai—who discovered Madam Wang's schemes against Jia Min while also uncovering other concubines' hidden plots. To protect his wife and newborn daughter, Lin Ruhai sent away all other women from the household.
Dropping ten copper coins on the table, Bai Tang stood up. The city gate was about half an hour's walk from Lin Manor. With quick steps, Bai Tang reached Lin Manor's entrance in less than ten minutes.
"What business do you have?" The doorman of the Lin family appeared to be new and did not recognize Bai Tang. However, seeing her imposing demeanor, he assumed she was an esteemed guest and treated her very politely.
"Excuse me, I am looking for Lord Lin; please help me notify him," Bai Tang said calmly.
"Please wait a moment; I will inform him right away!" Although the doorman did not receive any bribe from Bai Tang, he hurried inside to relay her message. Doormen are observant; he sensed that Bai Tang was extraordinary.
The doorman had barely entered for a short while when hurried footsteps echoed from within, and the next moment, Lin Ruhai appeared in Bai Tang's line of sight.
"Brother Bai, you have come!" Lin Ruhai's eyes were darkened, bloodshot, and his face was weary, lacking the usual composure and calmness. Upon seeing Bai Tang, Lin Ruhai's eyes immediately shone with hope.
"Lin brother!" Bai Tang cupped his hands in greeting, but halfway through, he was grabbed by Lin Ruhai's arm and could not continue.
"Brother Bai, come with me quickly!" With that, Lin Ruhai pulled Bai Tang and ran toward the inner courtyard.
"Lin brother, where are you taking me?"
"Brother Bai, my child's life depends on you!" At this moment, Lin Ruhai clung to Bai Tang like a drowning man grasping the only piece of driftwood. "Do you still have the medicine to save my wife? Can you give me one?"
"Of course. However, this medicine is for strengthening the body and may not be particularly effective for treating diseases. Your son's illness still requires a doctor to prescribe the right treatment for recovery," Bai Tang emphasized. The Peiyuan Pill cannot directly kill pathogens; it can only strengthen the body and enhance immunity, relying on the patient's own health to drive away the virus.
"I understand." Lin Ruhai grasped the meaning behind Bai Tang's words. "My child is currently extremely weak, and the doctor does not dare to prescribe strong medicine. If he can take your pill to condition his body, he will be able to withstand the effects of the medicine."
Lin Ruhai continued to pull Bai Tang into Jia Min's courtyard. Upon entering, they first saw several old men with white beards, each twisting their mustaches with furrowed brows that could crush a mosquito. These should be the renowned doctors in Yangzhou City.
Lin Ruhai led Bai Tang around the crowd directly into the Inner Chamber. Inside, Jia Min was carefully wiping sweat from a child on the bed, her eyes filled with love and sorrow, wishing she could take their place.
"Madam, Brother Bai has arrived," Lin Ruhai reminded his wife gently.
Jia Min immediately looked up and almost lunged toward Bai Tang. "Young Master Bai, please save my child!"
"Sister-in-law, there is no need for that. I will do my utmost to help your son," Bai Tang said in surprise as he saw Jia Min about to kneel before him. He quickly stepped back behind Lin Ruhai.
Lin Ruhai reached out to support his wife, saying, "My lady, don't worry! Brother Bai will definitely be able to cure Mo Er."
I can't believe it! Lin Ruhai, when did I ever promise to cure your son? If the King of Hell really wants to take your son, I can't stop him! Besides, the system hasn't assigned me a mission to save your son; whether he can be saved is still uncertain!
Bai Tang could only complain internally while putting on a worried expression as he looked at Notian on the bed. Upon closer inspection, he was shocked to see that the figure on the bed was poisoned and was continuously losing blood; the health bar was almost empty.
Bai Tang walked to the bedside and pretended to check the child's pulse.
"Brother, did you find out anything?" Li Ruhai asked eagerly.
Bai Tang withdrew his hand and said, "Lin brother, the young master is not ill; he has been poisoned!"
Lin Ruhai was taken aback. "What?"
Bai Tang repeated himself.
Lin Ruhai's face turned pale, and a hint of killing intent flashed in his eyes.
"Brother, do you know how to cure my Child's poison?"
Bai Tang exchanged for an Antidote Pill from the shop and handed it to Lin Ruhai: "This Antidote Pill can neutralize most poisons."
Jia Min quickly snatched it away, dissolving the antidote in clean water and carefully feeding it to the child bit by bit.
Before long, black liquid began to ooze from the child's body. Jia Min, feeling both joy and heartache, used a handkerchief to wipe away the black liquid and instructed her subordinates to boil water for her son’s bath.
Bai Tang spoke up to stop, "Sister-in-law, the young master has just expelled the poison and is weak. Taking a bath might cause him to catch a chill. It would be better to wipe his body with a cloth instead!"
Jia Min immediately nodded in agreement, "Thank you for the reminder! You've worked hard, young master. I will instruct the servants to prepare a place for you to rest right away."
Bai Tang was not tired at all, but seeing the couple from the Lin family, it was clear they had many matters to attend to. He cupped his hands in a gesture of respect and left with the servants. As he passed through the outer hall, he received several intense gazes, all from the elderly gentlemen present. They had already heard what happened inside and knew that the young master of the Lin family was poisoned rather than ill. They admired Bai Tang for being able to recognize such symptoms and wanted to consult him.
Lin Ruhai naturally would not let them disturb Bai Tang; instead, he invited them inside to check on his son and prescribe medicine. Now that the poison had been resolved, his son's body was still very weak and needed a doctor to prescribe medicine for recovery.
"Ding! Mission completed: Save the young master of the Lin family and Jia Min. Reward: Ten Gold Ingots and 1,000 experience points." The delayed mechanical voice of the system put Bai Tang in a good mood. After sending the servants out of the room, he sneaked out to meet Lin Mei Mei for a photo.
Due to her brother's illness, Lin Daiyu often went to her mother's courtyard to accompany her mother and brother. Today, however, Bai Tang did not see her because he had to go to school. After searching for a while, he found the main character of Dream of the Red Chamber in a pavilion by the lake. However, the six-year-old girl already possessed a unique charm: her eyebrows were like delicate crescent moons, and her eyes seemed both joyful and affectionate. When still, she resembled a beautiful flower reflected in water; when moving, she appeared like a slender willow swaying in the wind—a true fairy-like presence. What was most surprising was that despite Lin Mei Mei's delicate appearance, she was actually very healthy with no shortcomings.
Bai Tang took out his phone and began snapping pictures of Lin Mei Mei. She looked great in every angle; she was simply a flawless beauty. Lin Mei Mei held a brush and wrote large characters with grace and tranquility, resembling an ink wash landscape that made one forget their worries. Sitting in front of Lin Daiyu was a middle-aged man with a round waist and broad back, square face and wide mouth, complemented by sword-like eyebrows and starry eyes; he had a straight nose and prominent jawline that exuded righteousness. Bai Tang guessed this man must be the ungrateful Jia Yucun.
Bai Tang took a photo of Jia Yucun as well; after all, he was also somewhat of a celebrity. One couldn't deny Jia Yucun's good looks; he photographed well too. If Bai Tang showed his picture to Father Bai, Father Bai might mistakenly think it was Lin Ruhai.
After Lin Mei Mei finished writing, Jia Yucun recited a passage from the Four Books to her. Bai Tang listened in confusion, completely unaware of what they were discussing. Thus, admitting his illiteracy, Bai Tang put away his phone and quietly slipped back to his residence.
