As night fell and the lights began to glow, I stood on the platform, bored, lightly tapping the edge with my toes. My heart was filled with irritation and helplessness, simply because I had to wait for the last train to arrive.
"What on earth is going on? It's just a ride on the last train, yet I always encounter one trouble after another," I complained discontentedly.
Lu Yuanbai glanced at his watch and then looked up towards the distance. "Let's be patient a little longer; it should be here soon."
I shot him a disdainful look and did not respond.
In the distance, the sound of a train whistle grew clearer, echoing as if it were right beside us. The dim yellow lights flickered in the darkness, like a ghostly presence.
The train slowly pulled into the station, its doors opened, but it was empty inside. Only the lights in the carriage cast long shadows of the two of us.
Suddenly, a deep and powerful rumble came from beneath the train. The car shook slightly, and I immediately gripped the handrail tightly, my palms sweaty with an ominous premonition rising in my chest.
"There was no announcement, no warning sound; this train seems a bit off," Lu Yuanbai said with a furrowed brow.
I nodded in agreement with his assessment.
The train suddenly began to accelerate; what had been a sluggish vehicle seemed to be infused with life in an instant. I looked around, trying to find some useful clues. However, aside from us two, there were no other passengers in this carriage.
"Xiao Yangxia, look outside," Lu Yuanbai reminded me gravely, pointing.
I followed his finger and looked out; the scenery outside was rapidly retreating.
Retreating...
Retreating...
Wait!
Why did these scenes keep repeating?
I widened my eyes, trying to discern the scene before me. The large tree that had just passed by, the house, and the child holding a balloon... It seemed we were trapped in an endless loop!
"This is simply a supernatural event," I muttered under my breath.
Lu Yuanbai remained silent, offering no opinion. I sighed deeply and inadvertently caught sight of a corner of a newspaper peeking out from under the seat by my feet. I bent down to pick it up and handed it to Lu Yuanbai. "Take a look at this."
Lu Yuanbai took the newspaper and quickly skimmed through it, unable to suppress a gasp. The headline read "The Curse of the Last Train," and the content was chilling.
"On July 14, 2018, three passengers mysteriously disappeared from the last train. The conductor insisted he had never seen these three individuals, and there were no anomalies in the surveillance footage."
"On March 21, 2020, the last train experienced a mechanical failure and was forced to stop for three days."
"On December 12, 2021, a passenger claimed to have witnessed a ghost appear on the last train, terrifying enough to cause them to faint on the spot."
"On September 30, 2022, the last train suddenly accelerated while in motion and has not stopped since."
...
"What kind of nonsense is all this?" I couldn't help but ask Lu Yuanbai.
Lu Yuanbai shook his head. "I don't know either, but based on what this newspaper says, our current situation is quite dangerous."
I clenched my fists and pointed to a specific paragraph in the newspaper. "Here, it describes exactly the predicament we are facing."
Lu Yuanbai followed my finger to see a striking line of text: "The last train will accelerate at midnight until it disappears at the end of time..."
