Gu Lingfeng owed a total of thirty thousand taels of silver. The debt was to a large casino in Haining. He incurred such a large amount because of his wife, Nie Wanqiu. Nie Wanqiu was from Haining and was exceptionally beautiful; in her youth, she had been a courtesan.
