I decided to become an interior designer again. I initially gave up my career to take care of Fu Tianming wholeheartedly. But now, I no longer want to sacrifice my dreams for him. I want to restart my career and even plan to open a small studio of my own. I want Fu Tianming to know that I can still live well without him.
After making this decision, I felt much lighter. I began searching for a storefront and preparing to open the studio. One day, while I was walking in the nearby streets, planning my future, I suddenly received a call from Fu Tianming.
"Where have you been? Why aren't you back yet?" His voice sounded impatient over the phone.
I replied calmly, "I'm not coming back."
He seemed taken aback. "What do you mean?"
"What's with your temper again?"
I said calmly, "Fu Tianming, let's get a divorce."
"I've already signed the divorce agreement; just sign it and send it back to me."
He scoffed, "What nonsense are you talking about?"
"Feng Nuannuan, didn't I tell you? I can't divorce you."
"What good will these tricks do?"
I slightly curled my lips. "I'm not playing tricks; I'm serious."
"Fu Tianming, I'm really tired."
"I don't blame you; don't feel guilty either. Let's part ways peacefully."
After saying that, I hung up the phone.
Before long, he called again. I directly rejected the call. A moment later, a text message came in from him.
"If you want to play this boring game, go ahead and play it by yourself. I don't have time to entertain you."
I smiled faintly. There were no feelings left inside me.
Fortunately, Han Zheng soon came over for dinner. His arrival eased the sadness in my heart. Han Zheng comes over almost every day for a meal. He never eats for free; he always brings a bunch of gifts with him. Sometimes it's freshly available durian, sometimes it's exquisite tableware, and once he even bought me a whole set of kitchen supplies.
"I can't use them at home anyway; it would be a waste to let them sit around."
"Why not just come over for a free meal?" he said with a grin.
I couldn't argue with him, so I accepted.
That day, he came to help me fix the air conditioner. He stood on a chair, and perhaps his movements were too vigorous, causing his shirt to ride up unintentionally.
I unexpectedly caught a glimpse of his abs. The lines were distinct, firm, and attractive.
I couldn't help but stare for a moment longer.
He noticed my gaze and smirked, "Want to see more?"
"I could lift my shirt up for you to have a good look."
I was taken aback and quickly waved my hands, "No need."
He burst into laughter.
I shot him a glare and turned to leave.
But for some reason, my face felt a bit hot.
That day, I planned to make roast duck for dinner.
In the afternoon, I made a special trip to the supermarket to buy a duck.
However, as I walked, I suddenly felt something was off.
It seemed like someone was following me from behind.
I quickened my pace, and the person behind me did the same.
I slowed down, and they slowed down too.
My heart sank immediately.
I didn't dare look back and quickly turned into a nearby hallway.
Fortunately, that person didn't follow me in.
I let out a sigh of relief and hurried home.
Once I got home, I immediately locked the door.
Peering through the peephole, I saw no one outside.
My heart settled slightly.
But I was still very scared.
It wasn't until Han Zheng came over for dinner that I relaxed a bit.
"I ran into a strange person downstairs today."
"They kept following me; luckily, I ran fast."
Han Zheng frowned upon hearing this.
"Next time you go out, call me to come along."
"I'll protect you," he said confidently while patting his chest.
I smiled lightly, "It's okay; I'll be careful next time."
"Besides, you can't possibly go out with me every day."
He blinked and said, "It's not impossible."
I was taken aback for a moment.
He quickly explained, "What I mean is, I have to pass by your building anyway when I go out."
"Why don't we just go out together? It would be nice to have some company."
"Right?"
He flashed me a brilliant smile.
I remained noncommittal.
After dinner, Han Zheng went home.
Before going to bed, I checked the doors and windows again to make sure everything was securely closed before I went to sleep.
In the middle of the night, I groggily got up to drink some water.
But as soon as I stepped out of the bedroom, I realized the power was out in the house.
It was pitch black all around, with no light at all.
I turned on my phone's flashlight and walked toward the door.
The living room seemed normal.
But just as I reached the door and was about to turn on the light, I suddenly heard a rustling sound from outside.
It sounded like someone was trying to open the door.
My heart jumped into my throat.
How could someone be opening the door?
Could it be the person who followed me during the day?
I widened my eyes in terror and desperately twisted the doorknob.
But the doorknob wouldn't budge at all.
Then I heard the sound of a key being inserted into the lock.
