"Strange," Feng Yinxiao frowned and said without hesitation, "I have already made up my mind to kill him. Why do you have to rush ahead and bear the notoriety of murder?"
Yun Kexin shook her head. "Avenging my father is justified. After enduring all these years, can't I take revenge just once?"
"I do not oppose Yun Kexin killing him," Feng Yinxiao explained slowly, "but it does a disservice to you. What should be a natural human reaction becomes distorted in the eyes of outsiders, ruining your image and reputation. It's not worth it."
"I don't care how outsiders see it," Yun Kexin's clear eyes deepened as she looked at Feng Yinxiao seriously. "I only hope that you, my husband, can understand and support me, and not blame me—"
"Fool, I care for you too much to blame you. When I saw you rush forward to stab Jiangyin Marquis, I understood your feelings. But I didn't expect you to be so agitated," Feng Yinxiao pulled Yun Kexin into his embrace, his lips lightly brushing against her hair. "I only regret that I was too slow, allowing you to take the lead and bear the notoriety of murder alone."
Yun Kexin's eyes glistened with unshed tears as she instinctively tightened her arms around Feng Yinxiao. "I forgot to ask, where are Father and my elder brother?"
"They came to see you after you fainted and then left," Feng Yinxiao whispered.
"What about the Duke?" Yun Kexin asked again. "He must be terrified by what happened."
"Father was frightened by Yun Kexin," Feng Yinxiao smiled faintly, deliberately misinterpreting Yun Kexin's words. "He thought you might become delirious over a person who deserved death a thousand times over; that would be too unworthy."
Yun Kexin chuckled lightly: so the Duke did not blame her; that was somewhat reassuring.
"Feng Yinxiao, I can't wait any longer," Yun Kexin's voice suddenly turned cold. "I can't wait to see Fu Lianyin's downfall and the complete ruin of the Fu Family."
Feng Yinxiao immediately ceased smiling, tightening his grip on Yun Kexin's hand and speaking solemnly:
"It won't be long now. Previously in the ancestral hall, Lord Yun was restraining himself; this time when we return, I'm afraid the Fu Family will face disaster. As for the other members of the Fu Family," he paused, his gaze drifting, "we had already found traces of Fu Yueheng's crimes, but for some reason, it seems to have quieted down recently. I don't know what kind of scheme is at play or if they've heard some rumors."
Yun Kexin recalled how her adoptive father had mentioned Fu Yueheng a year ago and said softly, "It's unlikely they've heard any rumors; something must have temporarily delayed matters. We need to be patient: if the enemy moves, we move; if they are quiet, we remain still to avoid alarming them and ruining our efforts."
"Mm," Feng Yinxiao nodded and pulled Yun Kexin back into his arms. "It's late; get some rest. We have a lot to deal with tomorrow."
As Feng Yinxiao said, Yun Yang felt anything but relaxed on his way back from Duke of Yan's Residence to Duke of E State Mansion. Although he had a direct connection to Fu Lianyin and Second Brother's deaths, those were merely pieced-together bits of evidence that paled in comparison to what he witnessed tonight in the ancestral hall of Duke of Yan's Residence. Normally, such matters shouldn't involve outsiders; however, Duke of Wind insisted on letting him observe in the ancestral hall. The intention was clear: he wanted to show him that Duke of Yan's Residence had decisively handled this matter. As for the exposed Fu Family issues, he hoped that Deputy Minister of Justice would not show favoritism due to his strict enforcement of law.
Yun Ke was also in a terrible mood—Duke of Yan's Residence had decisively executed those involved in plotting against Father years ago, avenging him. Logically speaking, he should feel comforted; yet it was his sister Yun Kexin who ultimately killed the murderer. He wanted to step in when he saw her so emotionally charged because this was in front of everyone; he feared for her reputation at Duke of Yan's Residence and that she might lose favor or face criticism.
When Yun Yang returned home, his face was long with flames burning in his eyes as he looked at her with an intensity that made her tremble with fear. He seemed troubled by something that happened at Duke of Yan's Residence. Initially worried that Zhuo Min might have leaked something, she later realized that Yun Yang had attended Duke of Yan's Residence’s grandchild’s Hundred Day Feast; if Feng Hongrui and others were suspicious, they wouldn't choose this moment for confrontation. Moreover, given how much time had passed without anyone mentioning it again, it seemed they had long forgotten about it. Thus, she reassured herself that Yun Yang was merely stressed over work-related matters; although he hadn't entered her room lately which made her anxious and dissatisfied, she felt somewhat relieved as she went back to rest.
Unexpectedly, the next morning when she woke up, Yun Yang was already waiting for her early in the Main Hall while Water Lily silently served beside him without daring to ask a word.
"Master, why are you up so early?" Fu Lianyin entered the main hall and saw Yun Yang sitting in the upper seat, his expression solemn like a statue. She couldn't help but feel a jolt in her heart. "Is there something going on in the palace today?"
"No," Yun Yang coldly glanced at her and mockingly asked, "Did you sleep well last night, Madam?"
Fu Lianyin felt a chill run down her spine: Yun Yang never took the initiative to "care" about whether she slept well, and with such an expression and tone, something must be wrong.
"I slept okay," Fu Lianyin forced a smile and said, "What about you, Master?"
Yun Yang did not respond, continuing to scrutinize Fu Lianyin with a furrowed brow, remaining silent for a long time.
"Master, please say something," Fu Lianyin was unnerved by Yun Yang's unprecedented "attention" and couldn't hold back any longer. "Did Consort do something wrong again? You might as well tell me directly instead of acting like this."
Yun Yang let out a cold laugh and said lightly, "I just admire how you can still sleep soundly; it seems you really have no conscience."
"Master, what do you mean by that?" Fu Lianyin took a deep breath and glanced around. "What reason does Consort have to lose sleep?"
"What reason?!" Yun Yang's voice suddenly rose, his gaze sharp as a blade directed at Fu Lianyin. "To this day, you still refuse to confess and plead guilty, and you're here trying to curry favor. Fu Family, remember this: I am your husband and also the Deputy Minister of Justice of Great Taihe."
In that moment, Fu Lianyin felt as if she had fallen off a cliff, caught off guard and filled with panic. She held her breath, unsure how to respond, simply staring blankly at Yun Yang.
"Husband, Consort..." Fu Lianyin struggled to smooth her hair and one corner of her clothing, forcing herself to appear calm. "I don't understand your meaning; I haven't done anything wrong."
Yun Yang erupted in anger, standing up from his chair and striding toward Fu Lianyin. He grabbed her wrist and coldly said, "Then let me make you 'understand' thoroughly right now. Come with me!"
Fu Lianyin was taken aback and tried to break free but found herself unable to resist Yun Yang's strength as he dragged her out of the hall.
"Master, if Consort has truly done something wrong, please clarify," Fu Lianyin instinctively thought there might have been an issue last night but still pretended to be clueless. "You shouldn't drag me around like this; what will others think?"
"You shameless woman!" Yun Yang pushed Fu Lianyin forward, causing her to fall to the ground. "It seems you won't shed tears until you see the coffin; our family is unfortunate enough to have someone like you."
"Master, what happened?" Shui Lian had been following quietly but could no longer hold back—Yun Yang was usually strict but relatively gentle toward women and rarely lost his temper like this. "Madam is after all the main wife; what you're doing now will not only affect how others see it but will also draw the attention of King Han."
"Get away!" Yun Yang was determined not to tolerate any longer and wanted to confront Fu Lianyin directly. Offending King Han was only a matter of time; he wasn't afraid. "I would love for people from King Han's residence to see what kind of person his sister truly is..."
Shui Lian knew she couldn't persuade him and could only take a few steps back awkwardly. "Regardless, Master, this will bring criticism; we need to clarify things."
Fu Lianyin had always hated Shui Lian deeply but at this moment gained no sympathy from her words. She believed that nothing incriminating had fallen into Yun Yang's hands, so she raised her voice and sat there pounding her chest while crying:
"Since you have always been reasonable and fair, why are you causing such a scene today? Let's speak openly and not hide anything," Fu Lianyin said, pretending to wipe her eyes with a handkerchief. "Consort knows that you like Water Concubine and have long grown tired of me, so you find fault with everything I do. If that's the case, please write me a divorce letter immediately. I will gladly step aside to avoid being an eyesore here."
Shuilian looked at Fu Lianyin in shock, realizing that her attempt to mediate had almost led to Fu Lianyin blaming her for the unrest in the inner courtyard and the discord between the couple. If Yunyang really divorced Fu Lianyin in the future, regardless of the true reason, the Duke of E's household would surely consider her the culprit!
Shuilian couldn't help but shiver. She thought about checking if there was anything else for the Third House to attend to and quietly excused herself.
Yunyang was not foolish; he could tell from Fu Lianyin's words that she was trying to shift all the blame onto others, and he could not tolerate that.
"Hmph, Fu Family, since you want to speak openly," Yunyang stepped closer and slowly spoke, "then let me ask you, how did Second Brother die? Why did you conspire with your distant relatives to kill my brother?" He suddenly widened his eyes and unexpectedly grabbed Fu Lianyin by the throat, his face turning red.
Fu Lianyin felt a panic rise within her and asked without thinking, "What distant relatives? Consort does not know; also, Second Brother was murdered by someone else, not—"
Before she could finish her sentence, her beautiful face, which was beginning to show signs of aging, turned a shade of purple as she painfully insisted, "Master, Consort, it's unjust! I truly... do not know."
Yunyang was taken aback; his earlier anger turned into a cold smile. He now fully understood that Fu Family would stubbornly deny everything until the last moment. Thus, he no longer wished to waste words and commanded his servants to prepare the carriage immediately to head to the Duke of Yan's residence.
