Leaning against the beam, Yun Ran could not suppress her pain and despair. She couldn't understand why Fu Yihang treated her this way. It was bad enough that he brought her into the royal residence without sharing the joys of the night; now he expected her to endure both physical and mental torment in the days to come. She vaguely felt that Fu Yihang's actions were a way to deal with her, but what had happened to him?
He was so different from the easygoing and upright cousin she once knew. If she had known today's outcome, she would never have come here to be a concubine.
As her thoughts tangled, the sounds of Fu Yihang and Feng Yulu's passionate encounters echoed from the room again. Yun Ran covered her ears and retreated to a corner as if avoiding a plague, thinking it would soon pass. However, Fu Yihang seemed unusually excited tonight, as if under some spell, calling for Yun Ran to come in and clean up the "mess" after each encounter. Just as she finished tidying up, Fu Yihang would start again, making Feng Yulu writhe on the bed, deliberately creating sounds that could be heard outside but not too far away. Yun Ran felt like she was about to collapse!
Finally, after enduring until late at night, the noises in the bedroom gradually ceased. She let out a long sigh of relief and leaned against the door for a moment of rest. When dawn broke, she was called by the steward to do her tasks, leaving her with nowhere to vent her anger.
Early in the morning, Fu Yihang surprisingly got out of bed full of energy. Feng Yulu complained about her sore legs and didn't want to get up. He impatiently coaxed her for a while before she finally got up blushing, washed up, and changed clothes.
At this time, Yun Ran was already inside cleaning the room. Sitting in front of the dressing mirror, she absentmindedly scrolled through her phone when she heard Feng Yulu say:
"Husband, what happened last night?" She pouted playfully. "Look at how Consort has two dark circles under her eyes! How am I supposed to face people like this?"
Images of Fu Yihang's vigorous night flashed in her mind. Feng Yulu seemed somewhat satisfied amidst her complaints—she had always thought their consummation would be far off, but unexpectedly just one visit led them to "achieve their desires," fulfilling every wife's longing for affection.
Fu Yihang noticed that Feng Yulu seemed to be deliberately showing off or provoking Yun Ran and spoke softly in an unusual manner:
"This is a compensation for my wife; we didn't have it on our wedding night..." he said ambiguously.
This made Feng Yulu blush deeply as she stole a glance at Yun Ran. Noticing that Yun Ran was unresponsive like a wooden figure yet could sense her shuddering while handling the "blood-stained" sheets made her feel even more pleased.
"Consort Yun, you really worked hard yesterday," Feng Yulu said gently while playing with her hair ends and smiling. "You weren't too tired, were you?" Seeing Yun Ran's dark circles deeper than hers made Feng Yulu feel quite comfortable.
"Serving the Heir Apparent and Consort Heir is part of a Concubine's duties," Yun Ran forced herself to smile and said, "It's nothing tiring."
"Truly virtuous," Fu Yihang suddenly interjected mockingly. "If that's the case, Consort Yun will continue to keep watch at night..."
Yun Ran's eyes widened in shock, her face filled with disbelief. The task in her hands came to an abrupt halt: continue keeping watch? Last night she stood alone without anyone taking over; it had already made her feel like a lost dog. If this continued for several nights more, it would surely take her life.
"What? You don't want to?" Fu Yihang's face darkened as his voice lowered ominously. "You just arrived at the residence; there are many people and things you are not familiar with. You need to learn how to serve others first."
Yun Ran almost shouted out loud; she was a Concubine, not a maid. Why should she be made to do these things? Yet her lips moved but ultimately remained silent, her face pale and expressionless.
Fu Yihang seemed to see through her thoughts and coldly smiled, "Madam just entered the door and needs someone to serve her. She has taken a liking to you and praised you for being obedient and capable, saying you are easy to command."
Yun Ran lowered her head, the strands of hair on both sides obscuring her cold and chilling facial expression.
"Yes, everything is at the command of the Heir Apparent and Consort Heir," she suppressed her resentment and said softly, "Concubine will certainly do her utmost to obey."
Fu Yihang responded indifferently with an "mm," then turned back to chat intimately with Feng Yulu, teasing her until Yun Ran finished tidying up the bed and walked out. The smile on his lips instantly turned cold as he told Feng Yulu to wait for him outside, leaving Feng Yulu feeling as if she had fallen from the clouds into a valley, utterly confused.
Yun Ran ultimately overestimated Fu Yihang's temperament and her own capacity to endure—over the next few days, Fu Yihang used various means to torment her. He neither hit nor scolded her nor touched her but always tacitly allowed his wife to act on his behalf, which made Feng Yulu increasingly bold.
Eventually, taking advantage of Feng Yulu's absence, Yun Ran mustered her courage to go to Fu Yihang's Study, wanting to get some clarity.
"What are you doing here?" Fu Yihang looked up from his book with a gaze that seemed to say "you are dirty," "and close the door behind you?"
"Brother Fu, I will call you 'Brother Fu' one last time," Yun Ran saw Fu Yihang engrossed in his reading and recalled various moments from their past, causing her tone to soften unconsciously. "I just want to know why you treat me this way? Why?"
"What do you mean by how I treat you?" Fu Yihang feigned confusion, the corners of his mouth curling slightly. "Entering the royal residence as my concubine has always been your wish, hasn't it? I merely did you a favor; I never intended for anything else..."
Yun Ran was immediately struck hard by his words, crying out in despair, "But what kind of concubine am I? I'm worse than the servants in the royal residence! Heir Apparent, what have I done wrong for you to treat me like this?"
"Shut up! You have no right to talk about 'treatment,'" Fu Yihang suddenly stood up from behind the desk and strode towards Yun Ran like a fierce beast. He stopped in front of her with a terrifying expression, gritting his teeth as he said, "Do you know? If it weren't for your connection to the Third House, I would have beaten you to death with a stick long before you entered this residence."
Yun Ran was horrified and shouted recklessly, "Why? Why? Why?"
"Because you personally destroyed the happiness of this Heir Apparent and Cousin Kexin," Fu Yihang shouted hoarsely with a flushed face, "Yun Ran, you wretched woman! Even if I were to skin you alive, it wouldn't quell my hatred."
Yun Ran was shocked again and suddenly realized: it was all because of Yun Kexin! Fu Yihang had never forgotten her; he poured all his anger onto Yun Ran. She should have known that his taking a concubine was not born out of gratitude for their years of affection but was entirely for revenge.
"Heir Apparent, you have no connection with Seventh Sister, so how can you blame me?" Yun Ran argued, "What does this have to do with me—"
With a sharp crack, the word "is" was replaced, and Yun Ran lost her balance and fell to the ground.
"You shameless person, even now you have the audacity to cry injustice in front of me," Fu Yihang bent down, gripping Yun Ran's chin with one hand, his eyes filled with fury. "Years ago, Yun Kexin went to visit her uncle Aunt in Fan City. The original plan was for me, Heir Apparent, and Seventh Sister. If it weren't for your interference, my relationship with Seventh Sister would have been settled long ago. But because of you," Fu Yihang felt his anger surge at the thought of all the obstacles he faced during that time, tightening his grip. "After that, I could no longer approach her, all because of that hero saving the beauty, Feng Yinxiao... Yun Ran, you shameless person! Your fate today is your retribution!"
Fu Yihang released his grip and stood up, kicking wildly at Yun Ran, stomping on her head, face, and body. Yun Ran, crying and dodging, lunged forward to hug Fu Yihang's flailing leg, her voice choked with tears:
"That was Concubine's heart set on Heir Apparent, a moment of madness," she tried again to soften him with emotion, tears streaming down her face as she trembled. "I regretted it deeply afterward, but Heir Apparent, after all this time, I see clearly that Sister Seven has no feelings for you. The one who loves you deeply is me. Although I am just a Concubine Daughter, my feelings are absolutely genuine—"
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" Fu Yihang roared in rage, forcefully prying open Yun Ran's hands that clung to his leg and added a kick. "Shameless person, do you think I hate you and find you disgusting just because you ruined my happiness with Yun Kexin? Time and again I've caught you bullying her, scheming against her, framing her; this has made me loathe you immensely. In the end, you even dared to compete for a man with her—do you think you're worthy?"
"I couldn't accept it," Yun Ran shouted loudly, enduring the pain as if she had nothing left to lose. "Just because Sister Seven is the legitimate daughter, she should enjoy everything? Besides, she was adopted into the Third House..."
"Shut up! Shameless person! You are forever so shameless!" With disheveled hair and a crooked hairpin, tears carved deep lines on her face making her look grotesque. Seeing this, Fu Yihang turned his face away in disgust. "Have you forgotten what Aunt said years ago? If you want to be the main wife, then remove the word 'concubine' from your mother's grave before your next life. What does this have to do with Yun Kexin!? So what if she's adopted? No matter what, an adopted child is still legitimate. Clearly, you're twisted with jealousy and constantly opposing a sister who poses no threat to you. Do you know? Every time I see you bully her, I wish I could kill you and marry her as soon as possible to get away from a vicious person like you..."
"Oh? Vicious?" Upon hearing this, Yun Ran let out a cold laugh and wiped away tears from her cheek. "Fu Shizi, no matter how ruthless I am, I can't compare to your Fu Family. Your good Aunt, she truly deserves the title of 'vicious'. She plotted against the Second House, causing your beloved cousin Kexin to be separated from her family. She even attempted to use young Seventh Sister to harm her biological parents. If it weren't for that clever girl’s wits at such a young age, her relatives would have long perished by her hand. Later on, when that plan failed, she tried to use Sister Seven and your engagement to harm her instead. Did you really think my good mother would support your union with Sister Seven out of kindness? Ha ha," Yun Ran laughed maniacally as her words became sharper and more merciless. "She was merely using even you as a pawn for her crazy revenge scheme. After spending years by her side absorbing everything she did... compared to me, who is more vicious—your aunt or I?" (To be continued...)
