But this is a flat grassland, and even if there are a few trees, they are sparsely scattered across the plain, making them appear quite out of place. The group did not find any place to hide.
The howling behind them grew closer, causing the group to feel increasingly anxious. At this moment, even facing just this pack of wolves felt somewhat overwhelming for them.
Finally, they had to stop because, at some point, the wolf pack had already surrounded them. Ling Mo Xie and the others could now see the true appearance of these wolves, which could be considered the first type of animal they encountered after entering this space.
These wolves were bluish in color, with some having a slightly grayish fur. They blended into the grassland and were particularly hard to notice under the night sky; if one did not pay close attention, they might not even realize the wolves' presence, except for their deep growls.
The group looked around; this wolf pack could be considered a large species on the grassland. With pairs of glowing green eyes surrounding them, there were no fewer than a hundred wolves, which sent a chill down their spines. They currently had no ability to deal with so many wolves, and they were also unsure if these wolves possessed any special abilities unique to this space. The wolves in the Cultivation World differed by level and each had different spells they could cast.
"What should we do?" Xu Qingfeng asked Ling Mo Xie, feeling somewhat lost despite being a disciple of a Grand Sect. He had never encountered such a dire situation before.
Ling Mo Xie glanced at the others and then at the wolf pack. He looked into the distance behind the wolves and pondered for a moment before saying, "Now that we are surrounded, our only option is to break through. After all, we currently lack the strength to deal with so many wolves. However, opening a path for us to escape might not be an impossible task."
"That's all we can do. While the wolf pack is still observing us, we should take the initiative and break through from which direction?" Luo Yan had regained his composure after being startled. Having faced many desperate situations during his time under the coercion of the Evil Ridge Sect Leader, he was much calmer than Xu Qingfeng. Upon hearing Ling Mo Xie's words, he realized they only had this option and quickly agreed.
Ling Mo Xie looked into the distance with narrowed eyes and said, "Have you noticed? That patch of grass seems different; some areas have exposed soil, and the grass is much shorter than here."
"What?" Xu Qingfeng and Luo Yan were both puzzled by Ling Mo Xie's observation. They were astonished and couldn't understand his thoughts; what did it matter about the grassland at such a critical moment?
However, Hong Chi was surprised but did not show any doubt. He looked at Ling Mo Xie with certainty, knowing there must be more to come; Ling Mo Xie wouldn't mention something irrelevant during such a dangerous time.
Sure enough, as Ling Mo Xie noticed that perhaps the wolf pack was waiting for their Head Wolf to arrive and was becoming restless, he quickly explained to everyone: "Since there is a wolf pack here, doesn't that mean animals can survive in this space? Could it also mean that humans might exist? Look around; this is a vast grassland. If there are humans here, they wouldn't survive through farming. Seeing that patch of different grassland makes me wonder if there might be human settlements over there."
Upon hearing Ling Mo Xie's explanation, everyone appeared enlightened. However, Luo Yan still frowned and said, "Even so, we know nothing about this space's inhabitants. You all should know that humans are often the most terrifying creatures. If we recklessly venture over there, we might escape from wolves only to fall into the jaws of tigers!"
Ling Mo Xie smiled lightly at Luo Yan's words and glanced at the surrounding wolf pack. After a white Head Wolf arrived, these wolves seemed to become much more disciplined and... poised to pounce.
"Do we have any other choices? If it's humans we're dealing with, they are certainly not like these beasts; there's still a possibility for communication." Ling Mo Xie began channeling his Spiritual Energy and drew out his weapon. Although spells were not very useful now, having Spiritual Energy backing him up was certainly better than going in barehanded.
With a high-pitched howl echoing through the air, all the wolves seemed to receive an order and lunged toward Ling Mo Xie and his companions in unison.
Looking at the high-leaping wolf pack, Ling Mo Xie couldn't afford to hesitate any longer. He shouted, "Don't hesitate, break through in the direction I indicated!"
After saying that, he ignored the reactions of the others and thrust his longsword at an Azure Wolf that was pouncing towards him.
Although the longsword infused with Spiritual Energy was not as sharp as it used to be, it still cleanly sliced through the Azure Wolf's flesh. The sound of blood and flesh tearing echoed, but Ling Mo Xie didn't blink. Good, he had swiftly dealt with one; next, he abruptly turned the blade and struck at another Azure Wolf's head.
A flash of blue light caught Ling Mo Xie's attention. He frowned; these wolves indeed had something unusual about them. The Azure Wolf emitted a faint blue glow from its body. Although it was dim, Ling Mo Xie clearly saw that the Azure Wolf's speed suddenly increased, allowing it to evade the direct strike of his longsword.
However, the longsword in Ling Mo Xie's hand was still infused with his Spiritual Energy. Although it lacked the sharpness it had in the Cultivation World, a somewhat weak Sword Light still chased after it and cleaved the Azure Wolf in half.
"These Azure Wolves also possess something akin to a Spell that can suddenly increase their speed. Be careful!" Ling Mo Xie warned the others. He swung his longsword faster; having been accustomed to using Spells in the past, he hadn't paid much attention to sword techniques. Now, those techniques became a lifeline, allowing his longsword to move with the agility of a serpent as he continuously slashed down Azure Wolves.
The others were clearly in a similar situation. When they first began their cultivation journey, those sword techniques and knife skills were quite effective in enhancing the power of their Spells. However, after encountering Five Elements Spells, they quickly discarded those gradually useless skills. Now, those very skills had become their lifeline.
Only Hong Chi remained completely protected by the others from the Azure Wolves. As a Fire Spirit, Hong Chi was not a common Fire Spirit Body found in the Cultivation World; he was simply an existence known as Fire Spirit—unique in all of creation.
However, this also limited him; he could not cultivate and could only utilize fire energy from nature or control fire rules. Unfortunately, he had not yet matured enough to fully harness fire energy.
In this small space where Five Elements rules were incomplete, Hong Chi could use very little fire energy. Moreover, since he did not know any sword or knife techniques, he was like an ordinary child without any strength—able only to transform into flames to avoid harm.
The wolf pack was numerous, and soon everyone became extremely fatigued—a feeling they hadn't experienced since reaching their current level of cultivation. Their weapons felt almost too heavy to hold steadily. Although they managed to carve out a path, the pursuing wolves relentlessly chased them down, forcing them to split their focus between running and dealing with the wolves behind them.
Moreover, since these Azure Wolves could unleash something akin to a Spell that suddenly increased their speed, it made them even harder to defend against. It was like anticipating that an Azure Wolf couldn't reach you only for it to suddenly accelerate and attack directly; this required heightened vigilance regarding the capabilities of the Azure Wolves.
"Aw!"
Another earth-shattering roar echoed through the air. Seeing that his pack could not catch up with these prey and even some had been taken down, the Head Wolf seemed unable to remain calm.
Ling Mo Xie also heard this roar; every time it sounded before, there had been changes among the wolf pack. Knowing this was a signal for commanding them, his expression changed slightly as he said to those beside him: "You all protect Hong Chi well; we don't know what kind of trouble these wolves are going to cause next."
As soon as Ling Mo Xie finished speaking, he felt a gust of wind rushing towards him.
Ling Mo Xie was greatly alarmed. What was happening? He had just noticed that even the closest Azure Wolf, which had suddenly accelerated towards him, shouldn't be able to catch up so quickly. What was this?
Feeling the strong wind approaching his back, Ling Mo Xie had to pause for a moment. He raised his Longsword and infused it with internal energy to swiftly block the incoming gust.
"Clang!" The Longsword in Ling Mo Xie's hand accurately blocked whatever was coming at him, producing a sound like metal clashing.
Ling Mo Xie looked at the object that had rushed towards him. After being blocked by his Longsword, it was sent flying back a distance before landing steadily on the ground.
It was the white Head Wolf. The Head Wolf's eyes were a deep blue, fixed intently on Ling Mo Xie. However, Ling Mo Xie could see calmness in those eyes; the Head Wolf did not seem like an ordinary beast eager for its meal.
"Big White!" Ling Mo Xie quickly summoned Big White. Although the System upgrade was unavailable, Big White remained his Beast Pet, and that would not change. Ling Mo Xie could still summon it like an ordinary Cultivator would summon their Beast Pet, though it wasn't as convenient.
It was only after calling out for Big White that Ling Mo Xie realized this point. When the System was active, he could simply think about it to summon Big White. Seeing that Big White did not appear, Ling Mo Xie couldn't help but smile wryly and began to use the method from the Cultivation World to summon his Beast Pet by channeling Spiritual Energy and forming hand seals.
Meanwhile, the Head Wolf would not wait for Ling Mo Xie. It crouched low and cautiously observed him for a moment before pouncing at him without hesitation.
At that moment, Ling Mo Xie sensed a change in the wind around him, making his movements less agile. Even the hand seals he was forming went awry, and he had to start over again.
