In a flash, when Ling Mo Xie opened his eyes again, what entered his sight was a scene resembling hell on earth.
This was a basement, naturally dark and damp like any typical basement, giving off an eerie and terrifying vibe. However, that was just child's play compared to what lay on the ground, which was stained a dark red by blood, exuding a strong metallic scent. From somewhere, an unknown dripping sound could be heard, and the entire basement was eerily silent.
"Ah!" Shangguan Ying'er screamed, tightly gripping Ling Mo Xie's arm with a terrified expression.
Shangguan Ying'er's scream shattered the silence in the basement. Ling Mo Xie turned to look at her pale face as she trembled and clutched her own arms. He comfortingly patted her head and said, "What's wrong? You're a cultivator; you shouldn't be this scared."
Hearing Ling Mo Xie's words, Shangguan Ying'er finally lifted her head, staring at him with her big watery eyes, tears glistening in her eyes as she said, "Mo Xie, you... you look over there!"
One of Shangguan Ying'er's hands still clung tightly to Ling Mo Xie's arm while the other pointed diagonally behind her, yet she still dared not turn her head.
Ling Mo Xie couldn't help but smile wryly; how could this woman be so timid? Just moments ago, when facing Ning Qi, who was more powerful than her, she had confidently managed to deceive him.
Ling Mo Xie reached out and pulled Shangguan Ying'er into his embrace, saying, "What did you see? Is it really that terrifying? You are a cultivator after all!"
As he spoke, Ling Mo Xie also looked in the direction Shangguan Ying'er was pointing. Upon seeing it, he involuntarily took a step back, his heart jolting in shock; he almost let out a cry.
After steadying his mind, he looked again in that direction but couldn't help but feel a mix of pity and anger on his face. Damn it! How could these beasts do such things?
In that direction lay a large pile of something that at first glance was unrecognizable. However, upon closer inspection, it became clear that it was a heap of corpses of the impoverished.
If they were ordinary corpses it might have been bearable, but none of those bodies resembled humans anymore. They were all in various grotesque shapes, mixed with many severed limbs and broken arms. Some had even become monstrous due to the use of immature Elixirs and had their chests and abdomens cut open with their innards scattered everywhere.
Blood was everywhere, but it seemed that there was a leaking device beneath the pile of corpses, preventing the blood from overflowing.
Moreover, the pile of bodies likely hadn't been there for just a day or two; a foul stench permeated the air, and the mixture of corpse oil and blood dripped down. Terrifying corpses and severed limbs were constantly being invaded by fat white maggots crawling in and out.
Ling Mo Xie felt a wave of nausea rising from his chest, almost making him vomit.
On the other hand, Shangguan Ying'er was terrified at the sight of the gruesome pile of bodies and dared not look, not even having time to feel sick.
"Let's go. Let's see if there are any survivors inside," Ling Mo Xie said after a moment of silence, sighing inwardly as he wrapped his arm around Shangguan Ying'er's shoulders and covered her eyes.
"Okay!" Shangguan Ying'er nodded, her voice choked. She knew that Cang Qin and his disciples were not good people, but she never expected them to be so cruel. This made her doubt whether they truly belonged to the Azure Emperor's sect, whether they were really from the same faction as her.
Ling Mo Xie led Shangguan Ying'er deeper into the basement. They hadn't walked long before they came across what seemed to be an experimental area, with various instruments scattered chaotically on the ground, stained with dried blood. It felt as if through these instruments, one could glimpse the suffering of the impoverished people who had been captured for experiments.
However, it was still eerily quiet here; there were no sounds and naturally no signs of life. Could it be that they had arrived too late?
Shangguan Ying'er looked at the scene in silence before letting out a long sigh and saying, "Let's go! It seems we are a step too late. Ha ha, well, after all, Ning Qi has already developed the elixirs; why keep these people around?"
Shangguan Ying'er spoke self-deprecatingly: "This place is quite large, yet I had no idea. Ha ha! It's truly ridiculous! I can't even believe it myself! I must be lying! You think so too, right?"
Without waiting for Ling Mo Xie to respond, Shangguan Ying'er continued talking to herself until she finally collapsed onto the ground in tears.
Ling Mo Xie was taken aback for a moment before squatting down beside her and wrapping his arms around her shoulders. "Don't be sad. Cang Qin and Ning Qi are much more powerful than you; it's not surprising that they could deceive you into doing these things."
Shangguan Ying'er could only sob silently. Ling Mo Xie cursed inwardly, thinking that Cang Qian and Ning Qi were truly despicable, capable of creating such a hellish scene on earth. Their actions were ruthless, showing no regard for human life.
As he looked at the scene before him, Ling Mo Xie felt increasingly furious, his anger boiling over. Just then, when his rage towards Cang Qian and Ning Qilin reached its peak, a sudden System Notification Sound rang out.
“Ding! Congratulations! You have triggered the Hidden Quest: What is the Immortal Path? - Right Path's Trials and Tribulations (Part Two).”
Triggered a Hidden Quest? Ling Mo Xie was taken aback, and his anger subsided somewhat. He glanced at the system panel showing hidden characters; he hadn't even completed the first part of Right Path's Trials and Tribulations! Now he was triggering the second part?
Ling Mo Xie prepared to click on the Task to see the details but was met with a prompt: “Ding! You have not completed the previous Task. This Task is now locked.”
Ling Mo Xie cursed under his breath, “Damn it! Isn’t this just like not triggering it at all? It’s just a name hanging here.”
After cursing for a while, Ling Mo Xie decided to ignore the Task. Instead, he helped Shangguan Ying'er to her feet and said to her, “Alright, this really isn’t your fault. What’s with all this crying? If you’re feeling guilty, instead of wasting time like this, you should focus on cultivating and seek revenge for these poor souls in the future!”
Upon hearing Ling Mo Xie's words, Shangguan Ying'er stopped sobbing and looked up at him, “Really? Is that true?”
“Is it true or not? Think about it; do I make sense?” Ling Mo Xie said as he wiped away her tears with his hand.
Hearing his words, Shangguan Ying'er’s gaze became resolute: “Yes! I want to take revenge for these poor people! It’s all because of my own sluggishness that they...”
Ling Mo Xie shook his head helplessly. Why did this girl always take everything upon herself? Although he sympathized with those people, he would never blame their tragedies on himself. Everyone has their own fate; good or bad is not determined by anyone else.
