Ruyi entered the village late at night. Hearing her voice, Xie Youkang was reluctant to open the door. This sister of his had become a jinx in his heart, bold enough to commit murder. Who knew what would happen if he let her back into the house? Harboring a criminal was a serious offense, and he had a family to think about; he didn't want to take such a big risk because of Ruyi.
Ruyi called out several times from outside. When her elder brother did not open the door, feeling hungry, tired, and scared, she threatened, "Elder Brother, if you don't open the door and let me in, you better watch out! If you or your wife or your son are careless for even a moment, I'll kill you all! Just let me in so I can eat and rest before I leave! Open the door!"
"I'm coming! I just couldn't believe my ears when I heard you!" Xie Youkang replied. "I didn't want to open the door for you, and now you're threatening me? Be careful or I'll tell Parents!” Hearing Ruyi's words made him feel both fear and anger. She had already dared to harm Fourth Brother's two sons; now she had killed someone. She was like a wolf driven to desperation in winter, eyes red with rage. If he provoked her further, she might really kill his whole family.
Despite his fear and anger, he could only open the door and pull Ruyi inside. He peeked outside to check for any signs of people before quickly shutting the door.
"Are you crazy? It's dangerous everywhere with people looking for you; aren't you just asking for death?" Xie Youkang whispered. "You stole Silver from home and even took your clothes; why didn't you just run away?"
"I'm hungry. Tell Sister-in-law to bring me food in my room. If she dares to make a fuss, I'll say that I’ve been hiding here for days when I can't kill you all!" After saying this, Ruyi hurried to her room. She was truly exhausted and wanted to see her Parents, just like a wronged child wanting to run to their parents for comfort.
Xie Youkang stomped his foot, thinking how unfortunate it was for their family!
When the Fang Family heard that Ruyi was back, they jumped up from the kang. Just as they were about to shout loudly, they were hushed by Xie Youkang. They knew they couldn't make noise and could only angrily slap the kang with their hands while muttering under their breath, "That damned girl! Why didn't she die out there? After killing someone outside, she wants to come back and harm us—what a jinx! A harbinger of doom!"
"Stop saying such nonsense! What harbinger of doom?" Xie Youkang was already scared; hearing Fang Family rant made him even more afraid.
"I have to go get our child so we can all sleep together. What if that crazy woman breaks in at night?" Fang Family said as she put on her shoes and headed outside but stopped halfway in fear. She turned to her husband and said, "I can't go out; what if that crazy woman kills me?"
Xie Youkang glared at her and said, "What would she kill you for? As long as you don't expose her or make a fuss, she won't harm anyone! What do you think our Parents are for? Don't call the child over; send them away tomorrow. We'll be nice to Ruyi, and she won't be so ruthless."
Hearing this reasoning calmed Fang Family, who then went to the kitchen to get food for Ruyi.
When Xie Shengcai saw Ruyi, he slapped her hard several times and kicked her. Ruyi fell to the ground and knelt there, tears streaming down her face as she begged Xie Shengcai for help.
Meanwhile, Wang Clan lay on the kang unable to move, tears flowing down their cheeks while making pitiful sounds that tugged at one's heartstrings.
Ruyi looked at the Wang Clan and asked, "Mother, what's wrong? Why can't you get up to see me?"
Xie Shengcai nearly kicked her again and said, "You unfilial daughter! If it weren't for you, your mother wouldn't have been so upset that she fell ill. You've brought shame to our entire Xie Family! Why did you come back? Didn't you steal Silver when you left? Why are you back now? If you have any guts, don't come back for the rest of your life!"
Ruyi tearfully recounted her experiences outside, pleading with Xie Shengcai to save her.
Xie Shengcai sat down heavily on the edge of the kang, looking at Ruyi's miserable state—ugly, dirty, and thin—where was the charming girl from before? He felt a mix of anger, hatred, and heartache, tears streaming down his old eyes as he patted his legs in frustration.
Ruyi finished devouring the leftover food brought by the Fang Family and drank some water. Sitting on a chair, she curled her neck and kept asking her family to save her.
At this moment, the Fang Family was no longer afraid and said to Ruyi, "Didn't Sister-in-law say that? Why did you act so impulsively to seek revenge? Even if you want revenge, think it through; at least make it so people wouldn't suspect you. But you went ahead and made it obvious. Now there are capture warrants for you everywhere. Hiding at home isn't a long-term solution either; Captain Wang has said we can't hide you and that he will come to our house. He must have told the Village people to keep an eye on us."
The Fang Family was trying to scare Ruyi away.
Ruyi replied, "I plan to hide at home for a few days. Once I recover my strength, I'll leave. You still need to give me some Silver so I can run far away."
Hearing that Ruyi only planned to stay a few days relieved the Fang Family somewhat, but when they heard she wanted Silver, they felt a pang of pain. They had benefited from Ruyi before, but they were reluctant to part with this Silver since it was meant for their son's schooling.
Xie Shengcai mentioned that they would find a way regarding the Silver.
That night, everyone in the Old House slept uneasily, especially the Fang Family. She thought about what Father-in-law said about giving Ruyi Silver, but that Silver originally belonged to them. Why should it go to Ruyi? Ruyi had already stolen quite a bit before; now she wanted more, which made her feel very uncomfortable.
The Fang Family expressed her dissatisfaction to her husband. Xie Youkang told her not to show it and recounted how Ruyi had spoken harshly to him when she first entered their home, fearing it would provoke Ruyi further. However, this only made the Fang Family feel that Ruyi was an ingrate who might return after leaving, leaving them in constant fear and needing to sacrifice more.
The Fang Family was also cunning; they didn't want their misdeeds exposed and didn't want to offend anyone. She had previously taken advantage of the Li Family and thought they would be a good choice again this time. So she subtly revealed Ruyi's whereabouts at home to the Li Family and complained about how much Silver Ruyi had taken when she left. She mentioned how much Xie Youshun's family and the village chief's family hated Ruyi and even talked about how much reward could be gained by reporting her to the Government, successfully stirring up the Li Family's interest.
The Li Family wanted the bounty and aimed to please Xiao Lihua by taking revenge on Ruyi. If Ruyi was captured, the villagers would also breathe a sigh of relief. She was eliminating a threat to the people, so no one could say she was heartless. Even her father-in-law and mother-in-law couldn't blame her; they could just claim they were afraid Ruyi would harm them.
After much consideration, the Li Family spoke with Xie Youtai, who was also persuaded and went to report the matter.
The Fang Family had been watching the couple closely and realized they were up to something. Immediately, they informed Ruyi that she needed to leave quickly; otherwise, she might be caught at the old house and face charges.
Upon hearing this, Ruyi didn't hesitate and ran towards the mountains. That direction would make it harder for her to be caught. She took the less traveled paths and encountered few people along the way. When she reached the edge of the village, she looked at the newly built houses, glancing at Fourth Brother's home and then Third Brother's, a fierce glint flashing in her eyes.
Xiao Lihua hurried home and asked Xie Youshun, "Where's our son?!"
Xie Youshun replied, "He's playing in the backyard. Why do you look so pale?"
Xiao Lihua rushed to the backyard and saw Stone and Wood playing with the wooden horse that Xie Youshun had made. She finally felt relieved and told Xie Youshun, "I think I just saw someone who looked a lot like Ruyi, and it scared me." Xiao Lihua wasn't afraid of Ruyi harming herself; she feared for her child's safety. Ruyi had a criminal record, and when she had previously told Ruyi who had harmed her, she hoped Ruyi wouldn't target her family again. However, Ruyi had turned into a murderer, and Xiao Lihua was somewhat afraid that Ruyi might kill in a rage.
Xie Youshun's expression turned serious upon hearing this. "Are you sure you didn't see wrong?"
Xiao Lihua replied, "It looked about sixty or seventy percent like her; she was just a bit thinner, but her walking posture was very similar."
Xie Youshun thought it might really be Ruyi returning. His elder brother and sister-in-law seemed off; he realized this could mean harboring a criminal—even if it was his own sister, it was still a grave offense. But why would Ruyi come out during the day? Could something have happened? He wanted to go out but was worried about his family at home. Ultimately, he decided to take his wife and two sons to Second Brother's place for mutual protection before going to gather more information.
