Standing on the platform of the building that was about to be demolished, Chen Shanni's body suddenly began to tremble uncontrollably.
She had just called Qiu Mowen and knew he had arrived downstairs. Despite knowing she had acrophobia, Chen Shanni endured her trembling body and stood on tiptoe to look down.
In the distance was the end of the commercial street, bustling and noisy, while the building was quiet and desolate due to its impending demolition, two completely different worlds.
The area around the building was silent, with only a silver-gray car parked in a space that was already hard to see clearly.
In front of the car, she could see two figures. Although they were far away, Chen Shanni immediately recognized that it was Qiu Mowen leaning on the car engine, with another person standing in front of him, speaking animatedly.
Chen Shanni wondered who that other person might be—Kedan or Ilsn...
She squinted her eyes, carefully observing that person. Ah, how could it be Liu Jian? Why was Qiu Mowen with Liu Jian...
In an instant, it felt like a thunderbolt struck her; her body stiffened slightly as she looked again, and in the blink of an eye, Qiu Mowen had disappeared from sight.
Chen Shanni's hands, resting on the rusted railing, began to tremble involuntarily. The fact that Qiu Mowen was here with Liu Jian... She subconsciously retracted her hand and tightened her grip on her bag.
Despite her panic, Chen Shanni couldn't help but continue scanning below. Two more people had appeared in front of the car. Before she could identify them, Qiu Mowen confidently strode up to the platform with powerful steps.
His face remained cold as beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
He held his head high, looking proudly at Chen Shanni.
Seeing Qiu Mowen's stern face made Chen Shanni pull her hand back from the railing and take a few steps forward to the edge of the platform. Her heart was already in turmoil, yet she still put on an air of pride; she couldn't let Qiu Mowen look down on her.
At this point, she had no way out.
Qiu Mowen squinted at Chen Shanni and quickly noticed her hands twitching from time to time, realizing that at this moment, Chen Shanni was like a hen whose chicks had all been taken by an eagle—helpless yet filled with fighting spirit.
Qiu Mowen's heart raced, especially at the thought that Autumn Wind was downstairs. If Liu Jian couldn't come up with a reasonable excuse to get Autumn Wind to leave, then Autumn Wind might lock eyes with Chen Shanni. He couldn't imagine what desperate words would come out of Chen Shanni's mouth in such a situation.
The midday sun hung directly above Qiu Mowen's head, and his fitted suit began to cling to him like a rope. His body grew stiff, yet he had to maintain an appearance of confidence and disdain.
He slipped one hand into his pants pocket while slightly loosening his bow tie with the other, slowly approaching Chen Shanni, who stood at the edge of the stage.
They exchanged glances, and as Qiu Mowen continued to move closer, Chen Shanni suddenly shouted, "Don't come any closer! Stay there!"
Then she opened her bag and pulled out an LV paper bag, slamming it down at Qiu Mowen's feet. "Everything you wanted is inside—nothing missing!"
Qiu Mowen bent down to pick up the gray bag that seemed ominous. The large logo gleamed under the sunlight, shining brightly like a well-dressed model who had just fallen on stage, forgotten among the sparkling shoes.
Straightening up, Qiu Mowen looked down and gently opened the bag to see its contents.
"I wouldn't be so bored as to put everything in there!" Chen Shanni lifted her chin defiantly.
A hint of a smile squeezed out from Qiu Mowen's stern face as he reached into his jacket and pulled out a check for fifty million that he had prepared earlier. He slightly furrowed his brow; the black pen and red stamp matched harmoniously. This was all the liquid capital he and Liu Jian had on hand.
His prominent Adam's apple moved noticeably as if he had made a significant decision. After taking a gentle breath, he extended the check towards her. "Here you go!"
Chen Shanni's palm-sized face suddenly rushed in front of him like a gust of wind, snatching the check from Qiu Mowen's hand. She stepped confidently in her stiletto heels and quickly retreated back to the edge of the stage.
Qiu Mowen stared in shock at Chen Shanni, as if looking at a monster that could fly over rooftops.
In his astonished gaze, Chen Shanni suddenly burst into laughter. She pinched the corner of the check with one hand while running the other through her long hair, which flowed like clear broth noodles, dancing like a black butterfly.
She twisted her body slightly, stopped laughing, but her eyes became sharp, like a cheetah that had just awakened and spotted its prey. The sun hanging overhead shrank Chen Shanni's shadow into a small black dot, which from a distance looked like a pool of dried blood.
She withdrew her hand from her hair and grabbed the other end of the check, staring intently at Qiu Mowen.
Qiu Mowen knew that Chen Shanni was about to explode. He took a deep breath and looked at her with determined eyes.
What surprised him was that Chen Shanni's sharp gaze softened again. Her expression became calm, devoid of the anticipated anger. Sunlight streamed into her dark pupils, and her eyes resembled a fire pit extinguished by heavy rain, with no embers left—only a puddle of damp ashes remained.
Chen Shanni looked at Qiu Mowen with near despair, then weakly took out her wallet from her bag. She folded the check and placed it inside, then returned the wallet to her bag.
Her movements were slow, lacking strength like an old woman. After completing this series of actions, a glimmer of light emerged in her ash-filled eyes. A choked voice escaped her lips: "Ervin, did you ever love me?"
The surroundings fell silent; not even the wind could be heard. Every leaf stood still. Yet upon hearing this question, Qiu Mowen felt as if he heard a cacophony of restless cicadas in his mind, as if all the cicadas in the world were now before him, shouting at him with all their might.
What made him even more anxious was that Autumn Wind's face suddenly appeared before him because she had once asked him this same question in sorrow.
Qiu Mowen took a deep breath and nodded vigorously. But he quickly became flustered because when Autumn Wind had asked this question before, he had answered with silence.
Chen Shanni's eyes suddenly sparkled with light. She pulled out the check she had just put back into her wallet and opened it up to present it before her.
Qiu Mowen stared in astonishment at Chen Shanni's actions.
Time stopped for a second, and then she suddenly broke down. Tears, crystal clear and rolling like pearls, flowed from her eyes, which were covered by long and heavy eyelashes, landing on her exquisite makeup.
Immediately after, she cried out in anguish, her tears splattering onto the check. She reached out her hand, and with a gentle push, the check tore in half.
By the time Qiu Mowen regained his composure, Chen Shanni's check had turned into strips. As Chen Shanni let go gently, the pieces floated down to the ground.
Chen Shanni took a few steps back, her gaze following the fluttering paper. She saw the cars downstairs, Liu Jian, and two figures that had just appeared in front of the car.
She finally recognized those two people; one of them was Autumn Wind.
"Autumn Wind is actually down there..." Chen Shanni murmured. Suddenly remembering something, a trace of despairing laughter appeared at the corner of her mouth.
Qiu Mowen said nothing and made no move; he watched Chen Shanni from a distance.
Chen Shanni finally stopped crying. She lifted her head to look at Qiu Mowen and asked, "Do you love me more or do you love Autumn Wind more?"
Upon hearing this question from Chen Shanni, Qiu Mowen felt as if a thousand needles had pierced his heart. The most fatal part was that these needles seemed to have legs and were slowly crawling deeper into his heart.
He trembled his lips and looked at Chen Shanni, who met him with a gaze that seemed to have already seen through everything. In that look that forbade him to speak, he softly uttered two words: "Autumn Wind!"
This answer instantly burst the last bubble in Chen Shanni's mind. With a "pop," water droplets splashed onto her face.
She let out a cold laugh, as arrogant as the winter wind in Beijing. She took off the orange-red bag from her arm and tossed it lightly at Qiu Mowen's feet.
Then she removed her high heels. The moment her feet touched the cold ground, Qiu Mowen frowned slightly; he inexplicably heard the sound of meat sizzling on a grill.
He silently watched Chen Shanni, as if watching an unscripted movie, curious about what would happen next.
Chen Shanni took a step back, furrowing her brows, her face showing the pain of trying to control her emotions. Her voice trembled, "I've always been puzzled. You, who never liked wearing any accessories, suddenly started wearing a necklace... I just realized that the one around your neck and the one that Autumn Wind dropped on the sofa are a pair..."
"But don't worry, I've already returned it to Autumn Wind..."
"You've mumbled in your sleep several times, always calling out 'girl.' I could never figure out who this girl was, but I suddenly understood—this girl is Autumn Wind... Haha..." Chen Shanni laughed heartily, "I know you two aren't related by blood, but there's Sister Sally between you... This must be what they call fate!"
"The one who came with you is Liu Jian, right? I really didn't expect him to collaborate with you!" Her body began to sway. "Hey, look, Autumn Wind is down there! I bet she has no idea how much her Ervin Uncle loves her... Oh no, I have to go down and tell her!" With that, Chen Shanni leaped off the stage.
Immediately, Shan Ni's voice shattered the silence, echoing through the air.
Regaining his senses, Qiu Mowen rushed to the edge of the stage. Chen Shanni's body was already mangled, and beside her was Autumn Wind, who was nearly collapsing onto the ground.
A few minutes later, police sirens sounded.
