"Ugh, it smells terrible!" The most sensitive to smell, Li Yunyang, was the first to feel uncomfortable, even choking from the unpleasantness.
Xiang Xueer kept her gun raised, feeling as if many eyes were watching her from within the Misty Forest. A chill ran down her spine, and her back began to tingle.
Suddenly, she stumbled and looked down. In the thick fog, a leg protruded from the grass, surrounded by green weeds and soil that had been stained red with blood.
Qingtian slowly crouched down and reached out to examine the leg exposed in the grass. The body had long since vanished. After glancing at the severed part of the corpse, he decisively concluded, "It seems this is a civilian's body left over by a monster!"
Another monster. Xiang Xueer continued walking forward, where broken corpses lay scattered along the narrow path, dismembered and strewn about.
"Hmph!" Xiang Xueer let out a cold laugh. "It seems you weren't lying; this Taotie really loves human flesh. But it seems no one taught it that wasting 'food' is shameful!"
"You dead girl, how can you still joke at a time like this?" Li Yunyang's voice trembled slightly as he cursed. Xiang Xueer turned to look at his shaking legs and laughed, "Oh, I can't believe it! The esteemed disciple of Feng Qingyang, the leader of the Holy Ten Exorcists, is actually scared and has weak knees at a time like this!"
"You're the one who's scared!" Li Yunyang glared at the corpses of the dead civilians around them, his anger boiling over. He clenched his fists, his voice shaking with rage. "I can't wait to deal with that damned Taotie right now!"
Xiang Xueer glanced at his tightly clenched fists and thought to herself: This fool who refused to come earlier is now furious upon seeing the civilians being harmed by this beast. Who would have thought he actually has a sense of righteousness?
Speaking of which, Xiang Xueer felt that the smell of blood in the air was getting stronger. After walking for just a few minutes, they arrived at a circular clearing. Looking up, they were stunned by the sight before them.
Inside the circle of trees where no grass grew stood an open area as large as a football field, piled high with corpses that formed small mountains—over ten meters tall—composed entirely of villagers: men, women, children—all pushed together in a heap. Some of the bodies were already emitting a foul stench.
This... this is simply a slaughterhouse! Xiang Xueer's first impression was this, but she quickly realized that this was the Taotie's feeding ground. What kind of monster could consume so many people? She dared not imagine it and felt an unsettling fear creeping into her heart.
"This damned Taotie!" Li Yunyang's eagle-like eyes were filled with fury, gripping the Azure Dragon Sword tightly in his hand as he shouted, "Taotie, you came out with me, and today I will definitely slay you to offer to the people!"
Lan Ran Qingtian furrowed his brows, looking at the mountain of corpses, and said in a low voice, "Killing Taotie won't be that easy. Last time it didn't show itself and used a swarm of bats to attack us while it went to attack nearby villages. It seems this beast is quite clever."
"Yeah, it seems it understands strategy well; this is the classic tactic of 'feigning an attack in the east while striking in the west!'" Xiang Xueer said angrily. Suddenly, her expression darkened as she shouted, "It's over! Oh no, have we fallen into a trap again?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Li Yunyang and Qingtian's faces changed instantly. They heard distant screams of "Ah! Ah!" and turned to follow the sound, only to discover it was from the entrance of the Misty Forest where the villagers had sent them.
Could it be? The three exchanged glances and quickly ran towards the source. However, when they arrived, the scene before them made them gasp in horror.
Injured villagers lay scattered on the ground. Xiang Xueer rushed over to grab the doctor from the clinic who was slumped on the ground and asked, "What happened? What on earth is going on?"
"It was Taotie! After sending you in, we were about to leave when a pack of wild wolves surrounded us. We got scattered, and then Taotie appeared. We... we were all attacked!"
After the villagers explained, suddenly a woman struggled to get up from the ground and frantically rushed over to Xiang Xueer, crying out, "Xiaohua! Xiaohua has been taken by Taotie! You must save her!"
Xiaohua? Xiang Xueer looked at the woman and suddenly remembered the little girl who had smiled at her at the gate. She turned to look in the direction the woman was pointing and shouted, "This bastard even dares to take children! If I don't take you down today, I won't be called Xiang Xueer!"
She raised her AK47 and dashed into the darkness. Behind her, Li Yunyang and Qingtian shouted urgently, "Hey, wait! Don't be impulsive!"
But there was no trace of her; she had already disappeared. Li Yunyang cursed angrily, "This Dead Girl never listens to anything I say; it's driving me crazy!"
Qingtian and Li Yunyang quickly led the remaining injured villagers to evacuate from Misty Forest. Just as Qingtian was about to follow Li Yunyang to find Xiang Xueer, he was suddenly grabbed by that woman who knelt on the ground with a thud, pleading desperately, "Please! You must save my daughter!"
Qingtian reached out and patted her shoulder, saying, "Don't worry, I will do my best!"
Xiang Xueer rushed into the dark forest, following the blood trail along the way. After walking for a long distance, she noticed that the blood trail suddenly disappeared, which was unusually strange.
She cautiously looked around; all she could see were endless trees and thick fog. It was clear that there must be monsters lurking nearby, and they were likely to be large ones.
Xiang Xueer slowly crouched down, staring at the suddenly vanished blood trail. With eyes like a leopard, she scanned her surroundings. Her heart raced in her throat, and she dared not let her guard down for even a moment. Her sharp sixth sense told her that many pairs of eyes were watching her from beyond the thick fog.
"Hmph, it seems there are quite a few of them!" Xiang Xueer sneered. She was worried about the child's safety. Since the enemy wasn't rushing to attack, she decided to take the initiative.
She drew the dagger from her leg and tucked it into her waist, raising her gun as she searched for targets in the darkness. Suddenly, a red object flickered in the forest. Xiang Xueer quickly turned around and raised her gun, firing with a 'bang.' The bullet shot out instantly toward the red object, but after disappearing into the fog, there was no sound.
"Hmm?" Xiang Xueer narrowed her eyes and put away her gun, her eagle-like gaze fixed on the red object. Suddenly, before she could blink, a pair of sharp claws lunged out from the fog directly at her.
Upon closer inspection, Xiang Xueer realized it was the Two-Headed Hellhound she had encountered earlier in the forest. The creature opened its massive jaws wide and lunged at her neck.
This is bad! She was startled and quickly stepped back, preparing to draw the dagger she had ready at her side. However, the Hellhound moved too quickly; having been hiding in the fog all this time, Xiang Xueer couldn't react in time and was pinned to the ground.
A roar echoed through the forest, startling Li Yunyang, who had just entered the dense woods. He turned his head toward the source of the sound and wrinkled his nose slightly in alarm: "Oh no, it's a Hellhound!"
His first thought was that Xiang Xueer must be in danger. He immediately turned and ran toward that direction. After taking a few steps, he suddenly pivoted around, raised his Azure Dragon Sword, and shouted loudly: "Who’s sneaking around there? Show yourself!"
