Her mind was hazy, and just as she was about to speak, she heard him say, "You finally woke up."
With her eyes blurred, she looked at everything in front of her, feeling as if her body had fallen apart. It felt like there was a blockage in her chest, making it hard to breathe. When she finally recognized the person in front of her, she was so startled that she sat up abruptly.
The events leading up to her fainting immediately flashed through her mind. Grabbing Mo Xiao Li's collar, she whispered, "Where is the child?" As she spoke, she attempted to get out of bed, stepping onto the floor without even putting on her shoes.
Mo Xiao Li quickly approached, intending to pick her up horizontally, but she struggled against him, insisting, "I need to find the child. Let me go," while flailing her arms. With no other choice, Mo Xiao Li held her tightly in his arms.
After being carried back to bed, Mu Junqi still couldn't calm down. Seeing Huixin with her head lowered nearby, she immediately lunged toward her, grabbing her hand and saying softly, "Huixin, please go bring him over, okay?"
Huixin's eyes were filled with tears as she looked at the frail Empress, and her heart ached in response. Not knowing what to say, she could only lower her head. Seeing this, Mo Xiao Li stepped forward and embraced Mu Junqi, saying gently, "Don't be like this; there will be more children in the future."
Though there was still a glimmer of hope in her heart, at that moment it felt like the last line of defense within her had shattered. She collapsed weakly into Mo Xiao Li's arms and cried out in anguish.
At that moment, they were so intimately close to each other, yet Mo Xiao Li felt an unbearable pain in his heart. His eyes burned with tears as he pulled her even closer, the bitter taste lodged in his throat.
In deep pain and despair, Mu Junqi suddenly thought of something. Breaking free from his hold, she looked at Mo Xiao Li and seemed to whisper, "Can I go see him one last time?"
Looking at this helpless woman before him, Mo Xiao Li felt a dull ache in his heart and forced himself to say gently, "It's already... been taken care of. Please don't think about it anymore."
"Why? Why didn't you come to save him? No matter whether you hate me or not, the child is innocent. How could you be so cruel? I hate you!" Mu Junqi cried out in despair as she knelt on the ground. Then she began to laugh foolishly; that expression was both heartbreaking and pitiful. Mo Xiao Li turned to Huixin and said, "Go fetch the imperial physician," before lifting Mu Junqi up again.
Before long, Xia Ziqian entered the room with an unmistakable look of concern on his face. Mo Xiao Li glanced at him and said urgently, "Come quickly; Mu Junqi is not well."
"Let's hear it."
General Mu immediately knelt down again and clasped his hands, saying, "Your Majesty has long known that my daughter admires you and has decided that she will marry no one but you. This is a serious offense against authority, but now only I can resolve this matter. I wonder what Your Majesty thinks?"
Mo Xiao Li smiled coldly at this, slowly standing up and walking in front of General Mu, saying, "I didn't expect General Mu to also understand how to threaten me. If I do not agree, I wonder what means you have to deal with me."
"Your Majesty, I would not dare. I only request that Your Majesty take my daughter as your consort. Although I cannot resolve this matter like I can, I can assure you that in Western Yan, there is no one more suitable than me," General Mu said, though his humble demeanor could not hide the pride in his eyes.
Mo Xiao Li clenched his fists tightly, and just then, Zuo Yunqing walked in. After greeting them, he glanced at General Mu on the floor. Mo Xiao Li naturally understood and coldly said, "General Mu, you may leave for now. We will continue our discussion later."
Once the room was empty, Zuo Yunqing hesitantly said, "The family I inquired about previously said they had already taken someone away half a month ago. After several inquiries, I finally learned that the girl was brought back by General Mu."
As soon as he finished speaking, Mo Xiao Li slammed his fist down on the low table. The table could not withstand the force and broke in half with a loud crack. Zuo Yunqing quickly clasped his hands and said, "Your Majesty, please calm your anger. This matter concerns the Empress and countless citizens; you must think carefully before acting."
Mo Xiao Li certainly understood this principle, but it was the first time he felt led by the nose. A surge of unnamed anger burned in his chest. Taking a deep breath, he finally said, "Whatever demands General Mu has, you may begin to handle them."
