Leaving Jinghe Palace, Mo Xiao Li went straight to Jingxian Palace, her anxious expression drawing the attention of the palace attendants along the way, who quickly made way for her and quietly speculated about what had happened.
As she arrived at Jingxian Palace, Xia Ziqian came forward with a group of imperial physicians. His face was stern as he struggled to suppress his anger and coldly asked, "Is there no one else in the Imperial Medical Institute?"
Xia Ziqian, however, remained unfazed and respectfully knelt with his head bowed. "In response to Your Majesty, since I have always treated the Empress, I understand her physical condition better than others."
But to Mo Xiao Li, this statement took on a different meaning. She pointed at a few people nearby and said, "You all go in and see what is wrong with the Empress." Then she turned to Xia Ziqian and added, "You stay; I have something to say to you."
Once everyone else had left, Mo Xiao Li fixed her gaze on Xia Ziqian, her eyes filled with barely concealed hatred. The man before her remained as gentle and refined as ever, but the image of Mu Junqi's face filled with hatred immediately flashed in her mind, causing her hands to clench tightly.
"There are two options now: one is to leave the palace forever, and the other is to die immediately!" Mo Xiao Li said darkly.
At these words, Xia Ziqian looked up at her, a cold smile appearing on his lips as if he did not take her words seriously at all. "Your Majesty, I just don't understand what crime I have committed."
This remark was undoubtedly the last straw that angered Mo Xiao Li. She stepped forward in fury and struck him across the face. Xia Ziqian was caught off guard by the punch, causing his originally fair face to swell immediately. However, Mo Xiao Li was undeterred and kicked at him, but Xia Ziqian had already anticipated this and leaned to the left to evade the attack.
Taking a step back, he said, "Your Majesty, please be rational."
Mo Xiao Li halted her movements and sat down on a nearby chair. "How can I be rational when it comes to matters concerning her?" After saying this, she seemed somewhat deflated and fell silent.
At that moment, Xia Ziqian stepped forward and knelt on the ground respectfully. "Your Majesty, I certainly understand how much weight the Empress holds in your heart. Since you chose to give up back then, please rest assured."
Mo Xiao Li let out a cold laugh and stood up. "If that's the case, then I will spare your life." With that, she flicked her sleeve and left.
Xia Ziqian watched Mo Xiao Li leave with a helpless smile.
He exited the side hall and directly entered the bedroom. As soon as he stepped inside, he saw the imperial physicians talking with Mu Junqi. His sudden appearance startled everyone, who then hurriedly approached to pay their respects.
Mo Xiao Li did not pay any attention to the others kneeling on the ground but instead looked towards Mu Junqi, who he had not seen for several days. She seemed to have lost even more weight than before, and with a pang of concern, he walked over to help her up.
"What happened this time?"
"In response to the Emperor's inquiry, I have just been lacking appetite lately and feeling sleepy all the time. But please rest assured, Consort is fine," Mu Junqi said softly with a smile.
Mo Xiao Li, however, looked at her with confusion. It had only been a few days since they last met, so how could she have changed so much? He narrowed his eyes and scrutinized her from head to toe but could not discern anything. She still wore that indifferent expression, yet she felt different from before.
But it was not something to be concerned about; since she was willing to approach him, why not embrace it? He turned to the kneeling physicians and asked, "What is wrong with the Empress?"
"In response to the Emperor's inquiry, the Empress is simply weak in health, which has led to an imbalance in her vital energy and blood. With proper care for a period of time, she will be fine," one of the physicians respectfully replied.
Hearing this, he immediately felt relieved. He dismissed everyone else and held Mu Junqi's hands. "Have you come to terms with it?"
"You and I are already husband and wife; no matter what happens, this is an unchangeable fact. From now on, I will fulfill my duties and play the role of Empress well," Mu Junqi said. Although her demeanor appeared unchanged, her mannerisms and speech were completely different from before.
After speaking, she leaned into Mo Xiao Li's embrace. Although he felt puzzled inside, he still reached out to hold her close. Her scent filled his nostrils—sweet and gentle—but not unpleasant.
Since that day, Mo Xiao Li frequently rewarded her with gifts as if he wanted to send all the treasures of the palace to Jingxian Palace. This action deepened the jealousy among those in the palace, but everyone could only suppress their anger.
The weather grew hotter as May approached. During such days, no one wanted to go outside during the day. However, Mu Junqi continued her daily routine of going to the Imperial Garden with palace maids to collect dew from the lotus leaves for tea.
But on this day, as soon as she arrived at the Imperial Garden, she saw Mo Xiao Li walking nearby with a group of people. Realizing there was no way to avoid him, she could only lead her companions forward to pay their respects.
As I approached, I realized that accompanying Mo Xiao Li were the Wise King of Nanyang and his subordinates. Seeing the man looking at me with a hint of playful amusement in his eyes, I felt puzzled but still respectfully greeted him, saying, "Long live Your Majesty."
Mo Xiao Li looked at me gently and then said loudly to Yun Cheng beside her, "This is the National Mother of Western Yan; you should have met her that day."
Only then did Yun Cheng slightly bow and say, "I pay my respects to Empress Yan."
"There is no need for excessive courtesy. Since you are the prince of Nanyang, you are a distinguished guest of Western Yan. I just wonder how your matters are progressing," Mu Junqi replied politely.
I had heard earlier that people from Nanyang had come here to search for someone, but I had never known exactly who they were looking for. Still, I asked out of courtesy.
Yun Cheng smiled lightly and looked at Mo Xiao Li, saying, "Empress Yan truly is dignified and gracious."
"Thank you for your praise," Mo Xiao Li replied, though her gaze had already fallen on Mu Junqi, her eyes filled with unmistakable affection.
At that moment, a woman's delicate laughter echoed from afar. Everyone turned their heads in confusion toward the sound and soon saw Consort Qian dressed in a light purple pleated skirt adorned with several butterflies. A purple tassel was tucked into her outfit, and her bright eyes seemed capable of expressing everything. Her lips were naturally rosy with a touch of rouge, and her long hair floated in the gentle breeze, accompanied by the sound of jingling ornaments. She resembled a fairy among lotus flowers, enchanting and captivating, evoking a sense of tenderness in everyone.
Everyone was immersed in her beauty, while Mu Junqi appeared to be watching some kind of joke, a mysterious smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Consort Qian raised her eyes and spotted Mo Xiao Li and the others, immediately falling silent. She approached with her maids and eunuchs to pay her respects but seemed to casually glance over Mu Junqi's face.
After completing her greeting, she sweetly said, "I did not know Your Majesty was here; I could not avoid it. Please forgive me." She then looked up at everyone, her eyes filled with helplessness. If one did not know what kind of person she was, they would surely be enchanted at this moment.
