Everyone was in a panic, hurriedly kneeling on the ground. Mo Xiao Li looked around before saying in a deep voice, "Everyone, get up." Aunt Liu had been waiting outside the door and came forward to greet them as they entered. Mu Junqi smiled and said, "Concubine, are you still upset with me?"
Aunt Liu stood to the side, feeling flattered and quite uneasy. Mu Junqi knew that his status had changed, and even among family, there was now a gap. Moreover, it was clear from her expression that Concubine had not yet forgiven him for what he had done before.
So he could only smile helplessly and, with Mur's assistance, entered a side hall. Mo Xiao Li looked at this small courtyard; although it was not as magnificent as the palace, the elegant buildings calmed his heart and made him unconsciously recall the scene from the first time he met her.
As soon as they entered the side hall, a faint scent of jasmine wafted in. This was Mu Junqi's favorite fragrance; she often lit this incense while practicing calligraphy. Mo Xiao Li stepped in ahead of her, and Mur retreated, casually closing the intricately carved door behind him.
Now there were only the two of them left in the room. Mu Junqi felt that the air inside was thin and directly walked to the window to open it. A cold breeze rushed in. Mo Xiao Li walked over and quickly closed the window, then coldly said, "It's so cold outside; I don't want you to catch a chill."
Mu Junqi sarcastically smiled and said, "Is His Majesty worried about Concubine's health? But you can rest assured; Concubine is not weak enough for that." Saying this, she attempted to open the window again.
Mo Xiao Li reached out and pressed down on the window she was about to open, looking down at Mu Junqi with an icy demeanor. He angrily said, "You better not test my patience. I'm not worried about your health; I want you to understand what day it is today. If you catch a chill, it will be my burden, so it's best not to do that."
Then he softened his tone and said, "I've noticed you particularly enjoy going against me. Do you think that if you annoy me, I will let you leave? Don't dream about it; in this life, you won't escape." After saying this, he flicked his sleeve and walked out.
Mu Junqi watched him leave with an expressionless face. She turned around and walked through the flower hall to her bedroom, lying down fully clothed. Meanwhile, Mo Xiao Li stood in the courtyard with a melancholic expression, not expecting their relationship to reach this point. He paced back and forth irritably, forcing himself not to look at her.
Time passed quickly, and soon it was time for lunch. According to custom, the son-in-law should dine with his wife and parents together at the same table. However, due to issues of status, they could only set up a table according to Mo Xiao Li's wishes at Apricot Blossom Pavilion.
When Mur came in carrying a basin of water, Mu Junqi slowly opened her eyes. Seeing Mur, she asked, "What time is it? Why is it dark outside?"
Mur smiled as she approached her and said, "Your Highness, it's time to get up; it's already past noon. It's just gloomy outside, so it feels dark inside. After lunch, we need to hurry back to the palace."
Mu Junqi let out a bitter laugh and then whispered, "If only we didn't have to return to the Palace."
Mur, feeling helpless, was about to offer some words of comfort when Mu Junqi interrupted her. She could only quietly assist her with washing up and then styled her hair into a Lingyun bun before supporting her as they walked out.
As soon as they entered, they saw Mo Xiao Li already seated there, while General Mu and Madam stood by to attend to him. Upon seeing her arrive, everyone hurriedly knelt to pay their respects. She simply waved her hand to signal them to rise, unwilling to say another word. Madam stood up in dissatisfaction but, with Mo Xiao Li present, could only force a smile and say, "Empress, these are all your favorite dishes, so the kitchen prepared some for you. If you find anything unappetizing, please let me know."
Mu Junqi scoffed internally; she didn't even know what she liked to eat, so how could Madam possibly know? Nevertheless, she shot her a discreet glare.
"Empress seems to not want me here, does she?"
"Consort dares not; being able to dine with Your Majesty is Consort's fortune."
Mo Xiao Li's deep gaze glanced at her, a faint smile curling at the corners of his mouth as he pointed to the chair beside him. Mu Junqi understood his intention and obediently sat next to him.
Looking at the sumptuous dishes on the table, Mu Junqi felt no appetite. Li Fusheng stood nearby, announcing the names of the dishes while testing them with a silver needle. After checking everything thoroughly, he handed chopsticks to Mo Xiao Li for his use.
After a simple meal, two maidservants brought out dessert. Upon seeing the chrysanthemum milk pastry made by Concubine, Mu Junqi finally felt her appetite return. Mo Xiao Li noticed this and moved the entire plate in front of her, saying indulgently, "If you like it, eat more; I saw you didn't eat much earlier," prompting her to take two more.
After lunch, Mo Xiao Li and General Mu began discussing something together while Mu Junqi strolled with Mur in the more secluded Wangyue Pavilion behind the Apricot Blossom Pavilion. Although the weather was quite gloomy, she still happily wandered around with Mur.
Mur chattered away beside her while Mu Junqi listened with a smile. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen; beads of sweat formed on her forehead as it felt like needles were piercing through her stomach. All her strength seemed to drain away in that instant, and she weakly crouched down.
Mur had yet to notice Mu Junqi's discomfort and continued walking ahead until she heard Mu Junqi's cry of pain from behind. Only then did Mur realize her earlier oversight and hurried over to her side, allowing her to lean against her chest while speaking incoherently, "Your Highness, don't scare me! What happened?"
Mu Junqi clutched her abdomen, reaching out to tightly grasp Mur's hand, her voice faint as she said, "My stomach... it hurts so much." Mur could only watch helplessly as her face grew paler, forgetting to call for help.
Mu Junqi felt waves of intense pain sweeping through her body, weakly leaning against Mur's embrace, unable to speak. Mur anxiously looked around but saw no one, tears streaming down her face as she used a silk handkerchief to wipe the sweat from Mu Junqi's brow.
Suddenly, Mu Junqi coughed up blood. Mur watched in horror as the blood soaked through her clothes, panic setting in. She finally reacted and shouted loudly, "Help! Someone, please!"
She shouted until her throat was hoarse, yet no one came. She wondered where the guards had gone. At that moment, Mu Junqi had already fainted from the pain. With no other option, Mur gently laid Mu Junqi down and quickly ran toward the direction of Apricot Blossom Pavilion.
Unbeknownst to her, someone was hiding in the nearby woods, secretly watching everything unfold...
