"Whoosh!"
In the darkness, Bai Yujing emerged from the bottom, turning on the spotlight above, directing the beam of light into the distance while also observing the surroundings. The waterfall was about thirty meters high, and Bai Yujing and the others had plunged down from above, entering a river.
However, there was more than one waterfall in this area. After glancing around, Bai Yujing noticed seven or eight waterfalls of various sizes converging into a wide river flowing toward the horizon.
Ahead lay a gorge resembling a chasm, with a mighty river rushing into it. Bai Yujing and the others were positioned not far from the riverbank, holding on tightly.
"Zhou Jun!"
"Zhou Jun!"
Bai Yujing shouted loudly, wiping the river water off his face. The cold water felt somewhat piercing, but there was no time to climb onto the bank just yet. Bai Yujing realized he couldn't find Zhou Jun's trace; if this guy had been swept away by the turbulent current, there would be no chance of survival at this depth of a thousand meters underground.
Using the spotlight to scan the area, Bai Yujing finally heard a splash and saw Zhou Jun's head pop up from the bottom, gasping for air as he looked over at Bai Yujing: "I'm here!"
Bai Yujing laughed: "I thought you fell and died!"
The two climbed onto the bank and lay on the ground, panting heavily. Jumping down from such a high waterfall was indeed very perilous; they had no idea how deep the water below was or what conditions awaited them. But with that monster blocking their way above, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun had no choice.
Zhou Jun lay on the ground, lamenting about the dangerous situation they had just faced: "That monster was truly terrifying. How could such a thing exist in this era?"
Bai Yujing immediately replied: "In the unknown parts of the world, there are countless secrets and unknowns. Not to mention, compared to our purpose for this journey, that monster is nothing; for Bai Wang, it's merely a gatekeeper!"
Zhou Jun laughed continuously: "Such an impressive gatekeeper! Bai Wang must be quite formidable to have something guarding the entrance. Who could possibly get in? And if they do get in, how would they get out?"
Bai Yujing thought for a moment and said, "However Wang Quanyi came in and how he went out, we will enter and exit the same way!"
The light shone on the cave ceiling, revealing seven or eight massive caverns where waterfalls flowed endlessly. It felt almost dreamlike; one could hardly imagine that such a place existed a thousand meters underground without seeing it with their own eyes.
"Chirp chirp chirp!"
"What sound is that?"
Bai Yujing immediately turned off the spotlight on his forehead. Having been in the darkness for a while, Bai Yujing's eyes were different from those of ordinary people; he could see the general outlines of things around him clearly.
"It's those giant rats from before!"
This was Zhou Jun speaking. He recognized the sound immediately; he and Bai Yujing had encountered these creatures before. Bai Yujing stood up alongside Zhou Jun. Their movements had already attracted the attention of the giant rats. In the darkness, these light-averse creatures were extremely sensitive to light. Even from a great distance, any faint glimmer would catch their attention.
However, as soon as Bai Yujing turned off the spotlight, the giant rats stopped and began to scurry around in confusion, exploring their surroundings. Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun looked toward where the rats were.
Bai Yujing soon spotted an artificially constructed structure in the distance, along with a large ship. However, at that moment, countless black dots were moving chaotically on the ship. The vessel appeared to be in ruins, with numerous giant rats inhabiting it, treating it as their lair. Some were playing on the shore, while others entered the Underground River from the ship to hunt.
"Did you see that? That ship must be the one Wang Quanyi built back in the day. But it looks severely damaged. It should have been a paddle boat powered manually, but it seems unusable now. With just the two of us, we wouldn't be able to operate it!" Bai Yujing said to Zhou Jun.
Zhou Jun's mouth dropped open. "You can see in this darkness?"
Bai Yujing turned to look at Zhou Jun. "Can't you see me? You've been following right behind me."
Zhou Jun immediately replied, "I can only see a vague shadow; I can't make out anything else clearly. It's all very much based on feeling. How can you see so clearly from that far away? There's not a bit of light here!"
Bai Yujing said no more: "We'll talk about this later. My eyes are a bit different from yours, but I brought this, and it should come in handy here!"
"Infrared night vision goggles!" Zhou Jun didn't expect Bai Yujing to bring this along.
Bai Yujing nodded: "Although it's not as convenient as a flashlight, it will be just right for this kind of place!"
After putting them on, they could see their surroundings clearly at night, making their movements much easier: "Currently, we need to figure out how to find a boat to get into the water. To reach Bai Wang Tomb, we must pass through this Underground River. However, I didn't expect this place to have completely turned into a giant rat's den; we're in trouble now!"
Zhou Jun nodded: "Since the boat is here, it means we're in the right place. Wang Quanyi indeed set off from here and found Bai Wang Tomb, then returned safely. But without a boat, we don't have many good options!"
Bai Yujing thought for a moment: "Let's go take a look. Wang Quanyi gathered materials here to build the boat. We should check if there are any other Boats or auxiliary vessels left. If there are any remnants, we can use them to get across."
Zhou Jun asked: "What if we can't find anything?"
Bai Yujing immediately replied: "If we can't find anything, then there's nothing we can do. We'll just go back up and bring more people down. This time we've already mapped out the dangers and paths underground, so it will be much easier from here on out. If it really doesn't work out, there's no need to force it!"
Upon reaching a depth of one thousand meters underground, even the rocks began to change. The rocks here became hard and sharp, standing like square pillars reaching into the sky, arranged so neatly as if specially shaped by humans, filled with geometric patterns.
Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun aimed for the base where Wang Quanyi and his team built their boats. Although the materials were transported down from above, they were ultimately constructed here. Bai Yujing wanted to see if they could find anything useful at the boat-building site.
"Don't disturb those rats; this is their lair. They're everywhere. If they swarm us, two of us won't be enough for even one of them to take a bite!"
