At that moment, if Chang Wei were still present, seeing the excitement between Wei Yuan and Liu Lei when they met, as well as witnessing their embrace, he would surely think that these two had come down from the mountains together!
Wei Yuan is the type of person who easily gets along with others. Having spent three years in Jinghai High School, he treats everyone kindly as long as they are not the type who believes the world should revolve around them. Most of his relationships are rather superficial, but Liu Lei can be considered one of his few close friends.
The two met in their first year of high school. Wei Yuan usually hung out with a few other classmates, and they shared a brotherly bond that was almost like a sworn brotherhood, with Liu Lei among them.
In many ways, schools share similarities with prisons, especially closed-off institutions. According to incomplete statistics, almost every school and every grade has its share of arrogant show-offs who think too highly of themselves.
Of course, this inflated ego does not necessarily stem from exceptional grades or wealth; rather, it often comes from those who believe they possess extraordinary strength and feel entitled to act recklessly. If one were to find a prototype for this behavior, it would be Fat Tiger from the childhood cartoon "Doraemon."
Unfortunately, when Liu Lei had just transferred to the school, he unwittingly offended a bully. After Liu Lei was beaten up, Wei Yuan rallied three other friends to help him confront the bully. They managed to put a bag over the bully's head and took turns beating him up. By the time school ended that afternoon, the bully returned with seven or eight outsiders looking for trouble.
It turned out that when trouble arose, self-preservation kicked in. The friends who had once called each other brothers scattered in all directions. The bully's family owned an auto repair shop and had always been a domineering figure at school; no one had ever dared to stand up to him before. After being beaten up, he was left in a state of shock and ordered his companions to hold Liu Lei while he pulled out a wrench he had brought from home, ready to strike Liu Lei on the head without considering the consequences.
At that moment, everyone was shocked by his reckless behavior. A blow to the head like that could easily lead to death or severe injury. As soon as he pulled out the wrench, Wei Yuan’s friends had already fled in fear of being implicated. However, Wei Yuan stayed behind and rushed forward when he saw the bully brandishing the wrench.
He attempted to snatch the wrench away but was too slow; the bully was already preparing to swing it at Liu Lei's head. With Liu Lei unable to move due to being held back, Wei Yuan bravely used his arm to shield Liu Lei from the blow.
Although everything was resolved afterward and Liu Lei emerged unscathed, Wei Yuan suffered from that hit; his arm was immobilized for an entire week. From that incident on, Liu Lei regarded Wei Yuan as his only true brother in adversity. Even though they were placed in different classes after their first year, their special bond could not be replaced by casual acquaintances.
After being separated into different classes, they still hung out frequently. However, since their last meeting at the beginning of their final semester in senior year, Liu Lei completely lost track of Wei Yuan. After not seeing him for over a week at school, Liu Lei began to worry that something might have happened to him. His phone calls went unanswered, and he couldn't find him anywhere...
“Dad, why didn’t you tell me earlier that Wei Yuan was here?” Liu Lei complained.
At this moment, Liu Haisheng turned around and said, "I only found out he wasn't dead when he came looking for me the other night."
Wei Yuan, listening to the conversation between the two, was shocked. He never expected that Liu Haisheng was Liu Lei's father. No wonder Liu Haisheng was willing to help him sell books at school and accepted such a low commission; it was clear he was doing it for Wei Yuan because of his connection to Liu Lei.
The student fight incident from years ago, which even involved a wrench as a lethal weapon, had drawn the attention of the school leaders. Although Liu Haisheng hadn't yet become the director at that time, it was impossible for him not to be aware of it since it concerned his son. This was also why Liu Haisheng often sought out Wei Yuan for conversations and paid special attention to him; it was mainly because he was his son's brother and had once stood up for Liu Lei against a wrench.
Wei Yuan walked up and punched Liu Lei in the chest, saying, "You brat, Director Liu is your old man. Why didn't you tell me about this sooner?"
Liu Lei shrugged helplessly and replied, "I can't help it; my old man likes to keep a low profile and be mysterious. He doesn't let me spread the word."
Liu Haisheng, hearing their conversation, stepped forward and scolded, "You two brats can talk behind my back, but you can't even show some respect in front of me? Looking for a beating?"
Gu Jing watched this scene unfold between the students and parents, as well as the leaders and students' antics, feeling quite troubled. Just a moment ago, he had been joking with Liu Haisheng and thought he was polite and refined. However, seeing him just now reprimanding Flying Eagle and then acting like an old man with these two kids made him hard to read.
"Kids, stop reminiscing for now. Wei Yuan, where did you put those books? Bring them along," Liu Haisheng said.
So Wei Yuan climbed up to the attic and took down two large boxes filled with repaired books. After handing them to Liu Lei and moving the books, Liu Haisheng asked, "Wei Yuan, how about coming back to school with us?"
Liu Haisheng's words completely confused Wei Yuan. He had originally planned to return in another couple of months to take the college entrance exam; he thought that getting into any university would be enough to enjoy a few years of college life. After all, he no longer expected to rely on getting into college to find a job. Even if Gu Jing's situation was similar, it seemed unlikely he would have another chance to work for someone else in his lifetime.
"Wei Yuan, come back to school with us. There's someone outside waiting for you who really hopes you can return!" Liu Lei said with a mischievous grin.
It was then that Wei Yuan remembered that Liu Haisheng had brought two people over; counting Liu Lei as one, who could the other one be?
Temporarily bidding farewell to Gu Jing, Wei Yuan and Liu Lei each carried a large cardboard box of books and followed Liu Haisheng until they reached the intersection. It was only then that Wei Yuan noticed, following Liu Haisheng's instruction, a young girl in a school uniform sitting inside a car—it was Lan Xue!
She appeared restless in the car, her anxious face relaxing as soon as she saw that Wei Yuan was unharmed. After all, just moments ago, the two had a conflict with Chang Wei and others at the restaurant. When Lan Xue saw Wei Yuan making an excuse to send her away, she realized that Chang Wei might retaliate, which prompted her to find Liu Haisheng for help.
"Uncle Liu, are you all okay?" Lan Xue hurried over with concern as she saw the three of them come out.
