The Jinbei Van drove for over a hundred meters before stopping in front of a factory. Xie Ge observed for a while and then continued driving.
Wei Yuan knew this was his uncle's Pharmaceutical Processing Plant. Although it wasn't large, the profits from such places were still considerable for the locals each year.
When the Jinbei reached Qingxi Middle School, Xie Ge stopped the car. Since school had not yet let out, Wei Yuan said to Xie Ge, "Uncle, why don't you go to my house first? I'll wait here for Baby."
Xie Ge thought for a moment and replied, "That works too."
Wei Yuan sat on the railing at the school gate with a cigarette in his mouth. This behavior attracted the attention of passersby, but Wei Yuan remained unfazed, standing firm and glaring at those who walked by.
Finally, the school bell rang, and after waiting for a while, Wei Yuan spotted a delicate-looking girl, around fourteen or fifteen years old. She had a beautifully sculpted face that was particularly endearing, with her hair tied in a ponytail and dressed in a school uniform—innocent and charming!
This was the Baby that Wei Yuan referred to; she was Xie Ge's only daughter. Having lost her mother at a young age, and since Xie Ge was both her mother's cousin and her father's friend, the two families shared a close bond. Because she was so cute and lovely from an early age, she earned the nickname Baby.
Just as Wei Yuan was about to run over to her, he suddenly noticed a boy following behind his cousin. Judging by his stature, he was less than 1.6 meters tall and thin—clearly a middle school student.
However, he had a weathered face with wrinkles resembling dried orange peels. He wasn't wearing a school uniform or carrying a backpack; instead, he looked scruffy in odd clothing. Therefore, Wei Yuan didn't consider him a student.
At that moment, he followed Wei Yuan's cousin and called out to her several times. When she started running away from him more quickly, he desperately grabbed her backpack. In the ensuing tug-of-war, her backpack ended up in his hands, causing her to lose balance and nearly fall.
Fortunately, Wei Yuan had been watching closely and quickly ran over to catch his cousin, asking with concern, "Baby, are you okay?"
Upon hearing this term of endearment, the girl first showed a sweet expression on her face but then pouted at Wei Yuan and said, "Wei Gege, I've told you not to call me Baby anymore; I'm already grown up! My name is Xie Yufei!"
Wei Yuan ignored her protest and playfully pinched her pert nose while looking at the graceful girl with a smile. "You really have grown up; there are even strange uncles following you now!"
Hearing this made Xie Yufei blush but then laugh at his comment about strange uncles.
Wei Yuan approached the boy and asked, "Are you some student's parent or a janitor at the school?"
This statement clearly came off as insulting to the boy. He straightened up and replied defiantly to Wei Yuan, "And who are you?"
To avoid any misunderstanding, Wei Yuan turned to his cousin and asked, "Baby, who is this guy?"
Xie Yufei responded playfully to Wei Yuan, "He's a senior from our school's third year; he always comes over to bully me when he has nothing else to do. I don't want to deal with him..."
Wei Yuan, holding back a smile after hearing this, said, "I didn't expect you to still be a student, my apologies!"
The person must have thought Wei Yuan was coming to compete with him for Xie Yufei, so he looked at him warily and said, "This has nothing to do with you. Please leave now."
"What gives you the right to ask me to leave? Why do you think Yufei would like you?" Wei Yuan replied with a laugh.
Upon hearing this, the person was completely convinced of Wei Yuan's rival status and arrogantly declared, "Although I'm not handsome, I believe she will definitely like me because I have money! Do you know who my dad is?"
Clearly, such words could intimidate others to some extent. Although it sounded somewhat ridiculous coming from a middle school student, Wei Yuan was unfazed: "Your dad isn't Wu Gang, is he?"
At that moment, Wei Yuan suddenly showed an excited smile, which scared the other person. Wei Yuan grabbed him and said, "That's great! You have money, right? Do you know who I am?"
Seeing Wei Yuan's fierce expression, the seemingly aged but inexperienced boy immediately became frightened and began to tremble irregularly. Wei Yuan pointed at Xie Yufei: "Do you know what my relationship with her is?"
"Could she be your girlfriend? I'm sorry, boss! I didn't know your relationship before; I won't dare again next time. Please spare me."
Upon hearing this, Wei Yuan smiled even more and said to him, "Nonsense! Her father owes us a large sum of money. Since you believe she will definitely like you and your family is so wealthy, why don't you pay off her family's debt?"
"I... I don't have any money!" the person stammered.
"That's fine. Isn't your dad impressive? Just come back with me as a hostage and let your dad bring money to redeem you!" Wei Yuan said coldly with a smile.
The seemingly aged third-year student quickly prepared to flee upon hearing this: "Actually, I don't really have anything to do with her. I won't dare to approach her again in the future; feel free to do whatever you want with her!"
After saying that, he quickly threw Xie Yufei's backpack to Wei Yuan and disappeared without a trace. Wei Yuan, along with his cousin, prepared to go home: "Alright, that kid definitely won't dare to bother you anymore!"
"Brother, you're so bad!" Xie Yufei laughed.
Wei Yuan playfully flicked her nose and said, "What are you talking about? I'm just helping you stand up for yourself."
At that moment, Xie Yufei opened her backpack and saw that one of the textbooks had its cover torn in half after being yanked by that third-year student. Upon seeing the torn cover of a textbook used for less than a few minutes, Xie Yufei immediately burst into tears. Looking at her cousin in tears, Wei Yuan could only comfort her: "Baby, haven't you already grown up? Why are you still crying?"
"Who knew that upon hearing this, Xie Yufei cried even harder: 'You just tore someone else's book apart, that's too much...'
Wei Yuan, who had always been most fond of his delicate and adorable cousin, couldn't help but say, 'Please stop crying, okay? Once we get home, I'll help you fix the book, alright?'
'Can it really be fixed? I want it to be exactly the same, not all torn up!' Xie Yufei stared at Wei Yuan with her big, questioning eyes.
How could it possibly be restored to its original state? Wei Yuan felt a headache coming on. Fortunately, his cousin had stopped crying. After walking with her for a few minutes, they finally returned home.
Just as they reached the front door, Wei Yuan spotted his uncle's golden cup car parked nearby. He saw his uncle holding a feast of food in his left hand and an electric stove in his right, presumably brought from home to prepare for a hot pot meal.
Since his father's incident, the family hadn't enjoyed a decent meal. At this moment, Wei Yuan's uncle, Xie Ge, smiled and said, 'Sweetheart, quickly put your backpack away and come inside with your brother. We're having dinner here tonight!'
This long-lost feeling of family was truly wonderful..."
