"What good news?" Qin Weishan couldn't wait any longer. Just the possibility of an accident was enough to worry him, and now that he was told there was good news, his heart felt like it had blossomed with joy.
Xu Yicheng actually didn't know what the good news was; he had only heard about it. He couldn't guarantee that this "good news" wasn't ironic. Xu Yicheng just smiled and said, "You'll find out soon."
"Oh, Dr. Xu is keeping us in suspense," Qin Weishan relaxed his muscles and sank back into the lounge chair—sitting up was just too tiring for him.
"I really don't know what the good news is," Xu Yicheng replied with an apologetic smile. "It seems they are going to hold a meeting soon. I'll pass you a message later."
"Hmm?" Qin Weishan realized something. He thought Xu Yicheng meant "they are on their way back," but it turned out they had already arrived and had been back for a while.
So why hadn't Jiao An sent him a message to let him know he was safe? Had this guy forgotten his lifesaver? It made him anxious here.
For the first time, Qin Weishan experienced what it felt like for a wife waiting at home for her husband returning from war, even though he and Jiao An were merely comrades.
As this thought crossed his mind, the more he thought about it, the more displeased he became. He pouted and turned to look out the window to the south.
Xu Yicheng raised his wrist to check the time and said, "Alright, there's half an hour until the meeting starts. I need to go; it's still a bit of a distance from the living area to the administrative area. I'll come back later."
"Go ahead, go ahead. Remember to bring some food," Qin Weishan waved his hand. Xu Yicheng stood up and walked to the door, but suddenly paused with his hand on the doorknob.
"What's wrong?" Qin Weishan noticed Xu Yicheng's hesitation and asked.
"Someone's here."
Xu Yicheng didn't open the door; outside there were dense footsteps sounding like at least three or four people.
"Ding-dong."
"Who is it?" Xu Yicheng asked.
"Dr. Xu? You're here too."
The deep, magnetic voice from outside was very familiar and easy to recognize.
"General Jiang." Xu Yicheng glanced back at Qin Weishan, who immediately nodded in response.
The door opened. Behind General Jiang stood four other members of Defender—An Xiaotian, Liu Xuan, Jiao An, and Lu Sha.
"Huh?" Xu Yicheng was a bit confused. "Aren't we having a meeting?"
"Ha, after discussion, we considered Comrade Qin Weishan's health condition and decided to hold a brief meeting in his living quarters. Originally, we wanted Comrade Weishan to participate online, but it seems that wouldn't allow us to hear his opinions easily, so... Weishan, is that convenient for you?" General Jiang's face changed with his words, and his kind expression made it hard not to feel affection for him.
"Ha, of course! It’s truly my great honor that you would bring my comrades here for a meeting!" Qin Weishan hurriedly tried to get up, but An Xiaotian quickly stepped forward to support him.
"Weishan, just lie down; no one will laugh at you," An Xiaotian said.
"That won't do; it's basic etiquette. I happen to have some stools here; I'll go get them," Qin Weishan insisted as he attempted to rise.
An Xiaotian hurriedly pressed him down: "Hey, it's fine! I'll go; just tell me where they are."
The two argued for half a day, and Qin Weishan, fearing that others would become impatient, finally relented and let An Xiaotian go get it.
Once everyone was seated, General Jiang cleared his throat and said, “Nars, let's get straight to the point.”
“Alright.” Nars logged in, obediently placing his hands together. Looking at everyone's expectant expressions, he felt a bit constrained despite having attended many grand occasions as a prince.
“Here’s the thing: first, we need to clarify to Dr. Xu and Mr. Weishan that we are dealing with zombies.”
At this statement, the others remained silent, but Xu Yicheng and Qin Weishan were completely shocked—are there really zombies in this world?
“No, Nars, don’t joke around. The pleasantries are over; there’s no need for more jokes,” Xu Yicheng said while gesturing with his hands, seemingly unable to find a place to put them. Qin Weishan didn’t speak, but his wide eyes showed his disbelief.
“We are serious, Dr. Xu. I swear on my life,” Nars said. “The perpetrators this time are not human. They are a strange kind of creature that we refer to as Spirit Corps. Before everything began, you must believe one thing—souls exist in this universe. Only by believing this can you understand what I’m saying.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, signaling for Nars to continue.
“We encountered a soul from the Divine Realm, who should be an envoy chosen by the Time-Space King. Additionally, there are two crystals in the universe that represent the existence of supreme power: one is the Life Crystals, which can give life to any object, and the other is the Chaos Crystals, which can destroy any life or resurrect anything that has died. Long ago, the previous envoy from the Divine Realm brought the Life Crystals to my hometown, Kumul. My ancestors had already considered the possibility that Ban Sa would survive and return to Kumul to seize the Life Crystals, so they left them here; in fact, the Life Crystals are also the mother of Aibo.”
“Wow…” Lu Sha couldn’t help but exclaim. Indeed, this was too profound. Without Nars, who would know these things? Humanity often thinks of itself as knowledgeable but is unaware that in the vast universe, they are merely ignorant children.
“There’s just so much to add,” Qin Weishan said, feeling overwhelmed as he rubbed his forehead. Meanwhile, Xu Yicheng, having heard about Aibo, seemed particularly interested in this topic; he rested his arms on his legs and propped up his chin, listening intently.
“Uh, this seems to be going off track, but I must clarify this for you; otherwise, you won’t even know why the enemy is attacking us, let alone how to win a battle,” Nars brushed aside his air bangs that covered his eyes. “The purpose of Ban Sa’s attack is to gather these two crystals. These two crystals have not been reunited for over a million years; however, every time they do reunite, it brings about tremendous changes in the universe. Therefore, we absolutely cannot allow Ban Sa to obtain both crystals at once.”
“It is said that the Chaos Crystals have the ability to protect the Life Crystals, but there have been no historical records of this so far. The zombie envoy we encountered came specifically to protect the Life Crystals.”
“So it’s entirely possible, right?” asked Xu Yicheng.
“Yes,” replied Nars, looking approvingly at Xu Yicheng.
Xu Yicheng inhaled sharply and rested his hand against his chin before slowly uttering two words: “Mysterious indeed.”
“Mm-hmm.” Qin Weishan nodded as well. “There’s so much we don’t know about the universe.”
Nars could only smile wryly; he knew it was impossible to explain everything clearly to humans all at once and could only use all his vocabulary to describe this vast and complex world beyond Earth as best as he could.
“Please continue,” said An Xiaotian.
“Returning to the case itself, I believe that the Spirit Corps we encountered is not the murderer; he mentioned another one that possesses the power of the Chaos Crystals. That particular Spirit Corps is our true enemy, even though we have never met them before. The corpse was revived by that Spirit Corps, becoming her subordinate. And what she intends to do—I think everyone can guess.”
The room fell into dead silence.
At this moment, silence spoke louder than words.
Seeing no one respond, Nars awkwardly cleared his throat: “Ahem… just to add, there are two possibilities for those revived by the Chaos Crystals: one is infused with a soul by a Spirit Corps, and the other is simply a mindless body known as a Soulless. Moreover, both the Chaos Crystals and the Life Crystals can endow their subjects with any personality.”
“Just like Aibo,” interrupted Xu Yicheng, breaking the silence among others.
“Oh right! Dr. Xu, let’s have dinner together tonight,” said Nars, suddenly changing the subject playfully.
"Hahaha..." Xu Yicheng smiled at Nars, unconsciously patting his thigh.
"If everyone doesn't understand, think about our ally Aibo; it might be easier to grasp," General Jiang suddenly spoke up.
"Mm." No one ignored General Jiang's words, and they all responded in turn to acknowledge him.
However, Jiao An quietly exchanged a glance with General Jiang. The slight furrow of Jiao An's brow seemed to ask: Did you understand?
General Jiang shrugged.
"There’s quite a bit to explain." Taking advantage of the moment, Nars organized his thoughts, sensing everyone's attention shifting back to him. Nars continued, "This case is no longer just a simple murder. It has revealed a new force and brought another enemy into the open."
"That would refer to the Spirit Corps and the Soulless, right?" An Xiaotian said.
Nars nodded. In fact, Nars had been paying close attention to An Xiaotian; he was the calmest among all the listeners. From the beginning until now, An Xiaotian's posture and even the position of his shoes hadn't changed at all. Moreover, despite Nars discussing so many strange matters, An Xiaotian had hardly spoken except for earlier when he urged him to continue, as if he had experienced such things before and it didn't feel like he was hearing about them for the first time.
"Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to make a bold guess," An Xiaotian said as he looked down at the floor and suddenly leaned back in his chair.
"Our main conflict has temporarily shifted. Just now, from Nars's words, I suspect that Chaos Crystals come from the Demon Realm, right?"
"That's correct," Nars replied—though he hadn't mentioned where the Chaos Crystals came from, An Xiaotian had guessed correctly.
"And Life Crystals have already been taken by Ban Sa, right?" An Xiaotian looked at Xu Yicheng.
Dr. Xu silently nodded.
"This is why I believe our main conflict has changed," An Xiaotian said. "I think it's very likely that Ban Sa went to the Demon Realm searching for Chaos Crystals without knowing that they have already been relocated. In other words, we don't have to be on edge like before, fearing that he might attack at any moment because he's not even here."
"Right!" Qin Weishan exclaimed in realization, eyes wide open. Lu Sha gazed at An Xiaotian dreamily, her hands clasped together.
"And the Soulless, like Ban Sa, want to destroy our world." An Xiaotian suddenly paused and looked at Nars; Nars waved his hand reassuringly for him to continue.
"In the coming month, I feel..." An Xiaotian still seemed a bit hesitant—not because he was afraid to speak but because he feared that what he guessed might become reality.
"Go on."
"Xiaotian, continue!"
"Yes, yes, keep going; we're listening! No one will laugh at you!"
Everyone looked at An Xiaotian with admiration.
"I hope my guess isn't true..." An Xiaotian finally said: "We may face an unprecedented war against those zombies."
