Currently, aside from spending time with Xiao Tian to nurture our relationship, I am also verifying the agreement that Liu Shihui made with the man in black before leaving: that no more men in black would come to ambush us. It seems that his cousin is a person of principle and keeps his promises, which is why we have been living quite peacefully for over a week now.
Of course, besides this, I am closely observing the situation on the other side of the river. Liu Shihui's previous answers have partially resolved some of my doubts. I had some bold guesses about the purpose of their indiscriminate attacks and why they were doing it. The fat guy told me that Liu Shihui mentioned before leaving that she also wanted to know the answer. This means she herself does not know the purpose behind their indiscriminate attacks; she is merely carrying out orders passively.
I do not believe that Liu Shihui is still hiding anything from us now, especially not from the fat guy. Therefore, what I can temporarily conclude is that these individuals with the "Liu" badge are definitely involved in actions related to disaster. However, it remains unclear whether their indiscriminate attacks caused the virus to spread, ultimately leading to the disaster, or if they merely took advantage of the situation after the disaster occurred.
Analyzing Liu Shihui and their actions, it is evident that "it," meaning their family's organization or influence, is certainly carrying out some plan. However, based on the information I currently have, I cannot determine what their plan actually is. My previous guesses were merely conjectures without any solid evidence to support them.
Because of this uncertainty, I am somewhat unsure about our next course of action. If this disaster was indeed man-made or directly instigated by some malicious forces, such as those with the "Liu" badge, especially if these forces are connected to the United Government, then heading to the shelter planned by the United Government and military in the suburb might be akin to walking into a trap.
The problem is that based on the information Lao K sent me and the audio regarding military rescue efforts sent by Xiao Tian's friend in Jiangbei District, it appears that the United Government and military are indeed implementing full-scale rescue operations. Could it be that the United Government is playing both sides?
What if there is nothing wrong with the United Government? Then we would miss our last chance to reach the shelter just as the disaster in downtown worsens completely. In the end, when food runs out in Luminous Tower, we would be trapped here until we starve to death.
I am eager to know the news from outside and understand the situation at the shelter so I can adjust my current plans in a timely manner. Should we stick to the original plan and head to the suburban shelter before the disaster in the city center worsens completely? Or should we make alternative arrangements based on the changed circumstances at the shelter?
However, I haven't received a reply from Lao K regarding my last message, and I have no idea if that guy is in serious trouble. By the way, he still owes me money.
While I was caught up in this dilemma, Fatty had finished his training and just taken a shower. When he saw me on the balcony, he walked over.
“Lao Bai, about those supplies you asked about yesterday, I have some time today. How about I take you to check them out?” Fatty said while lighting a cigarette.
I was taken aback; I didn't expect him to bring it up so suddenly.
“Sure, I don't have anything else going on.”
We initially didn’t plan to bring Xiao Tian along, but when she heard we were going out, she insisted on following me, completely disregarding the dangers outside. She must have been cooped up in the Luminous Tower for too long and wanted to get some fresh air.
At first, I thought the place was outside the building, but Fatty indicated that it was actually inside the tower. I wanted to ask him where exactly it was, but he just smiled and remained silent, keeping me in suspense.
Since we were on the seventieth floor and walking down the stairs would take forever, we opted for the elevator. Fatty pressed the button for negative six, which meant that the place was located on the sixth basement level of Luminous Tower.
Fatty said, “Actually, I've been to Luminous Tower a long time ago. But my sense of direction isn’t great, and when I came back then it was dark. I was just delivering goods and only stayed on the sixth basement level for a short while before leaving. When I first arrived at Luminous Tower, it felt familiar. It seemed like I had been here before. Sure enough, while you two were busy the other night, I came down to take a look and realized I had indeed been here.”
“So all those supplies you got were from the sixth basement level? Is it a warehouse?” I asked curiously.
Fatty pulled out a cigarette to light it but noticed Xiao Tian was also in the elevator, so he put it away and said: “It’s a warehouse, but it’s not just a warehouse; it should be considered a contact point and transit station for my business back in the day.”
I was surprised; how big was this guy's business back then? Did he really operate a systematic industrial chain?
Fatty seemed to notice my astonishment; he smiled but didn’t say anything further, indicating that we would find out when we went down there.
Soon enough, the elevator reached the sixth basement level. Fatty signaled us to get ready; things could get rough down there. Once we were prepared, we stepped out of the elevator.
I positioned Xiao Tian between us, with the Fatty on my left and myself on the right. This way, we could protect her from any danger that might arise. This tactical formation had been rehearsed beforehand, and bringing Xiao Tian along today served as a practical test.
As soon as we stepped out of the elevator, we spotted three monsters crawling on the ground. Two of them were missing legs, while one was severed at the waist yet still alive. It was clear that these were the remnants of the Fatty's previous handiwork.
Before we could say anything, Xiao Tian skillfully approached to deliver the finishing blows.
After turning a corner, we entered a space as large as two standard football fields. The Fatty informed me that this was a warehouse, specifically used for storing their illicit goods. Many items were covered with tarpaulins, leaving us curious about what lay beneath.
In each of the four directions—east, south, west, and north—I noticed a door large enough for vehicles to enter and exit. The Fatty explained that these were all access points for transporting goods.
I quietly asked him, "You guys have been operating under the Luminous Tower all this time; wouldn't the government officials know about it?"
The Fatty chuckled knowingly and replied, "You don't know anything! This is what we call 'darkness under the lamp.' The more dangerous a place seems, the safer it often is. Back in the day, we even set up shop under City Hall. But to be fair, if we're bold enough to do this, you can bet we've already greased some palms up top."
I wasn't very familiar with their underground dealings, but from what the Fatty described, it sounded like an entirely different world.
Seemingly encouraged by my questions, he continued, "Do you know what kind of goods are primarily trafficked at this location?"
I hesitated before responding, "Isn't it just those controlled knives you sell?"
The Fatty burst into laughter at my response. "Those are just small fry! This route mainly deals in Arms."
I was taken aback by his revelation.
As he spoke, he pulled back a tarpaulin in front of us to reveal numerous wooden crates stacked neatly. He found a crowbar and pried open one of the boxes, gesturing for me to come closer.
To my astonishment, I saw guns inside.
The Fatty continued to pry open seven or eight more crates. I glanced around and saw rifles, handguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, pistols, sniper rifles—everything imaginable—even a rocket launcher.
I gasped and nearly shouted in disbelief.
The Fatty patted my shoulder and laughed, "What do you think, little Bai? This time I've opened your eyes and broadened your horizons!"
While I was still in shock over the pile of weapons before me, Xiao Tian lost interest in them and began rummaging through other boxes nearby. It seemed she was still thinking about her JK Uniform and wanted to see if there were any other varieties available.
This must have been one of her reasons for joining us on this trip.
Before long, she excitedly approached me with a large bag in hand.
A pair of watery, big eyes smiled like crescent moons, clearly having found something good.
In the meantime, the chubby guy had already strapped on an Assault Rifle and a powerful shotgun, along with two large-caliber handguns. I had managed to get a Sniper Rifle and the same two large-caliber handguns as him: a Desert Eagle and a Large-Caliber Revolver. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the ammunition for these two handguns was interchangeable.
Seeing us excitedly choosing our weapons, Xiao Tian, despite being a girl who wasn't particularly interested in firearms, came over to watch after finding her own good stuff. She only had a bag of clothes and no weapons, so I picked out two self-defense handguns suitable for women, strapping one to each of her Long Legs.
She might not appreciate these guns much now, but they could prove invaluable in critical moments later on. After selecting our firearms, the chubby guy and I gathered several boxes of ammunition and planned to head back toward the elevator.
As we were making our way back, a figure appeared in the darkness, swaying slightly. It was clearly a monster. The chubby guy and I decided to wait until it got closer before taking action; if it didn't approach us, we would let it be.
Suddenly, there was a loud bang as Xiao Tian fired her gun directly. Before we could react, she fired two more shots—bang bang! The monster not far away collapsed, apparently hit in the head.
Just as the chubby guy was about to praise Xiao Tian as a shooting genius and sharpshooter, before he could finish his compliment, we heard the familiar chaotic sound of footsteps mixed with frenzied roars coming from the darkness across from us. Almost simultaneously, we grabbed the ammunition boxes and pulled Xiao Tian toward the elevator, sprinting desperately.
As we rushed into the elevator, the horde of monsters was already less than ten meters away from the door. The chubby guy skillfully pulled the pins from two grenades and immediately threw them outside. I quickly pressed the button to close the elevator doors. Just as we reached the third floor, we heard two loud explosions from below—bang bang!
"Wow! That was thrilling!" Xiao Tian exclaimed, her face flushed and sweaty, filled with excitement and adrenaline.
Breathing heavily, the chubby guy and I exchanged glances. It seemed essential to give Xiao Tian a crash course on firearms knowledge and teach her when and how to use them properly.
