The shell landed not far from Tie Zhu's hiding place in the Small Building. The defensive works they had just built were reduced to ruins under the Japanese bombardment, and the Small Building on the right was hit by a shell, now engulfed in flames.
After the first round of shelling ended, the sharp sound of something cutting through the air quickly returned. Tie Zhu tilted his ear to listen and then sat back down.
Yu Dayong glanced at the panicked new recruits beside him, pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, took one out, and handed it to Tie Zhu. Tie Zhu shook his head and said he wouldn't smoke, then began to smoke by himself.
Taking a deep drag from his cigarette, Yu Dayong slowly spoke: "You guys don’t need to be afraid; those shells are landing behind us, not targeting us."
Sure enough, a few seconds later, Tie Zhu felt the ground shake twice, followed by a violent explosion in the distance. The enemy's shells landed several dozen meters behind Tie Zhu and the others.
Then the sound of something cutting through the air came again. This time, Tie Zhu determined that the impact point of the shells was at least a hundred meters away from them, and the sound was no longer as sharp.
"The Japanese want to plow through our defensive area. It seems like the Little Devils are going for a field battle," Shang Dahai said anxiously as he looked at the new recruits.
Night battles are the hardest; many people suffer from night blindness, including Shang Dahai, who couldn't see anything clearly beyond ten meters at night.
"Alright, let's go fix up the defensive works. Dahan, you stay upstairs to observe enemy movements and report immediately if you spot any enemies."
After listening to the sounds of artillery and confirming that they wouldn’t be bombed here, Tie Zhu decided to repair the defenses at the intersection; otherwise, they would suffer when the enemy arrived.
Shang Dahai shook his head: "Squad leader, I should go down to fix it. You can have someone else keep watch; my eyes can't see clearly at night."
Tie Zhu looked at him and then at the new recruits beside him: "Can you guys not see clearly either?"
Several new recruits looked at each other, and in the end, everyone nodded except for Zhou Wei.
“Zhou Wei, you stay upstairs. The rest of you come with me to repair the fortifications. Dahai, you move forward about ten meters and make a fire pit. If the Japanese come, we can see them in advance.”
“Okay, boss!” Shang Dahai nodded and went downstairs with his weapon.
Yu Dayong lit a cigarette and stopped when he got close to the door behind Tie Zhu.
Tie Zhu turned to look at him: “What’s wrong? Is there an enemy?”
Yu Dayong shook his head: “It’s nothing. I’m just finishing this cigarette before going out. Otherwise, smoking at night makes me a sitting duck.”
“Hmm, hurry up.”
Tie Zhu nodded in agreement and led several new recruits out the door.
The outside had changed dramatically; the street that was somewhat tidy just moments ago was now in complete disarray.
Bricks, unburned wood, and sandbags were scattered all over the ground.
“Pick up anything useful and put out the fire.”
Tie Zhu directed them methodically. He actually didn’t know how to command; he was just mimicking how he had seen his squad leader do it before, learning by imitation.
The shelling continued, and the Japanese seemed to have found their key bombing target, with dozens of shells hitting the same area in succession.
Tie Zhu turned his head, anxiously looking at the area illuminated by the explosions, where the Regiment Headquarters was located. Commander Hu Lian was directing the troops from that place, and he couldn't help but wonder how the Commander was doing now.
Recently, he had been extremely busy; these words were squeezed out little by little, writing a hundred at a time, then fifty.
