After Zhou Wei finished his self-introduction, several people around turned to look at him: "Have you been to school?"
Just a few words from Zhou Wei had intimidated these rough men. In this day and age, being a soldier on the emperor's rations was something only the most unsuccessful people did. Scholars who became soldiers at least had a chance to become officers.
The soldiers at the bottom were mostly uneducated, unable to even write their own names.
"Before I joined the army, I was a student." Zhou Wei felt a bit embarrassed under everyone's gaze and couldn't help but scratch his head, appearing somewhat awkward.
"Squad leader, he's a treasure. What do you think we should do?" Shang Dahai rubbed his hands together. In this era, people still held scholars in high regard; the saying "all professions are inferior, only learning is superior" was no joke.
"Well, I don't know either, but from now on, you'll be the one writing all the letters for the squad, how about that?" Tie Zhu looked at him curiously for a moment but quickly remembered that he had no family left, while Shunliu Brother still had relatives waiting for him to return home.
"Okay, squad leader, I promise to complete the task." Zhou Wei was so excited that he almost stood up again but was pressed back down by Shang Dahai, feeling embarrassed as he scratched his head once more.
"Who’s next?" Shang Dahai looked at the other five recruits.
The five recruits exchanged glances with each other, but with Zhou Wei going first, they gained some courage. One of them raised his hand: "Squad leader, squad leader, I'll go."
Tie Zhu nodded: "Go ahead."
"Hello, squad leader, my name is Wang Xiaoer, I'm from Suzhou, I..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a sharp sound of something slicing through the air echoed in the sky. The noise was loud and dense; it sounded like at least ten cannons firing simultaneously.
"Shelling, take cover!" Tie Zhu shouted, immediately getting up from the ground. Yu Dayong, who had been quiet all along, was the fastest; as soon as the sound of the cannon fire reached them, he quickly picked up his weapon and got to his feet.
"This way!" Yu Dayong pointed to a small building on the left, signaling everyone to run inside.
Tie Zhu couldn't yet distinguish sounds to determine their direction, but he could estimate the general landing point of the shells. Yu Dayong was right; the shells should fall to their right.
A group of them rushed into the small building. Tie Zhu glanced back at the new recruits under his command and noticed that the student soldier Zhou Wei was cowering behind a sandbag, trembling.
"Hurry up! Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Tie Zhu ran over and grabbed Zhou Wei with one hand while picking up his gun with the other, dragging him toward the small building.
Just like Shunliu Brother had taken care of him back then, he was now looking after Zhou Wei.
Zhou Wei was pulled hard by Tie Zhu and barely came to his senses. He managed to move his legs, which were shaking, and followed behind.
As Tie Zhu half-dragged Zhou Wei into the building, he noticed that the other new recruits were in a similar state. They had shown some courage to run earlier, but Zhou Wei didn't even have the courage to flee; new recruits feared shells while veterans feared orders.
"Squad leader, squad leader, I—I..." Once Zhou Wei regained his composure and looked at Tie Zhu, he became flustered, unsure of what to do. His earlier performance had been too embarrassing.
Tie Zhu saw through his concerns and smiled. After a day of fighting, his face was already blackened from smoke, but he revealed two rows of white teeth: "It's okay; you're doing much better than I did. When I first went into battle, I was way more scared than you. You'll get used to it."
With that, he led the way up to the second floor.
