Tie Zhu got up and looked at the table covered with Grenade fragments. If it weren't for these tables blocking them, he and Wang Shunliu would probably be reporting to the gods by now. 0

Feeling a mix of annoyance and relief, Tie Zhu cautiously took out a Grenade, walked to the corner of the stairs, pulled the pin, and threw the Grenade directly down from the second-floor staircase. "Bang bang bang..." The Grenade rolled quickly down the stairs to the first floor. 0

On the staircase leading from the first to the second floor lay two twisted bodies of Japanese soldiers. The power of the Heavy Machine Gun bullets was immense; one soldier had lost his head, while the other had his flesh and blood mangled, dozens of bullets having pierced through the wooden boards and hit him. 0

Tie Zhu pressed his mouth shut and stepped back a few paces, barely stabilizing himself. His stomach was empty, leaving only bile, making him feel extremely uncomfortable. 0

An explosion sounded on the first floor, mixed with various noises, but there were no human voices. 0

"Could there really be only two Japanese down there?" 0

Tie Zhu thought for a moment and found it plausible. There weren't many Japanese in town; having two people in one building was already quite a lot. Earlier in the Ruined Building, there had only been one. 0

After thinking for a long time, Tie Zhu decided he still needed to go downstairs to check. It wasn't a good idea to keep being paranoid upstairs. 0

With his Rifle ready, Tie Zhu carefully descended the stairs step by step, trying not to make a sound. 0

The two Japanese bodies remained twisted at the corner of the staircase. He forced himself not to look at the gruesome sight on the ground. 0

Struggling to walk down from the corner, Tie Zhu felt as if he could sense the sticky feeling from his shoe soles even through his shoes. The short few steps felt like they took an eternity as images of various corpses he had seen today flooded his mind. 0

Unconsciously quickening his pace, Tie Zhu arrived at the lobby on the first floor while lost in thought. 0

Tie Zhu was slightly stunned. Had he really made it to the first floor so quickly? Annoyed, he slapped his forehead. Thankfully, there were no Japanese soldiers around; otherwise, he wouldn't even know what hit him. 0

The first floor was even messier than before. The high temperature and debris from the Grenade explosion made the already dirty room even worse—blackened walls and shattered Jars scattered about. Nearby, flames flickered beside a Counter. 0

Tie Zhu hurried over and stomped on it with his foot; it didn't go out. He stomped again, but it still didn't extinguish and instead began to spread toward the Counter, with the flames growing larger. 0

Feeling anxious, Tie Zhu realized that if this Counter caught fire, this building would likely be completely consumed by flames. There was no fire brigade around to save them now. 0

Tie Zhu, feeling helpless, stomped a few times without any effect, then pulled out a Military Canteen from his waist and poured it all over the fire with a splash. 0

The sound of "puff, puff!" continued as the flames were suppressed, but soon they flared up again. 0

At this moment, Tie Zhu was like an ant on a hot pan, anxiously pacing back and forth, hitting his own head hard: "Tie Zhu, you can do it, you can do it! There must be a way." 0

While thinking, Tie Zhu's eyes scanned around for tools to extinguish the fire. By chance, he spotted the Kitchen next to the Counter. He remembered there was a water tank there; perhaps it contained water. 0

Hastily running into the Kitchen, Tie Zhu opened the water tank and found it indeed had water. He grabbed a nearby bucket and ran out with it. Just then, he heard the sound of the front door being pushed open. 0

Tie Zhu nervously looked at the entrance while holding the bucket. If a Japanese Soldier came in, his fate would surely be grim. 0

The door slowly opened, revealing a figure in a blue Military Uniform holding a submachine gun aimed at Tie Zhu. Upon seeing Tie Zhu's Military Uniform, he let out a sigh of relief and lowered his weapon. 0

"Commander! Chief of Staff!" 0

Upon seeing the person who entered, Tie Zhu was slightly taken aback but quickly set down what he was holding and saluted with a standard military gesture. There were two people who entered: one was Commander Hu Lian of the 66th Regiment, and the other was Chief of Staff Xu Staff Officer. 0

Hu Lian had just heard explosions coming from the Small Building at the Crossroads. It seemed that Kuomintang Soldiers and Japanese Soldiers were engaged in battle, so he rushed over with his staff officer. After listening at the corner outside for a while, it appeared that the fighting inside had ended. He cautiously opened the door to check on the situation. 0

"Put your hands down. What are you doing?" 0

"Report Commander, I am putting out the fire." 0

"Then why are you still standing there? Hurry up and extinguish it! The fire is about to reach the Counter. If the Counter catches fire, this house will be gone, and you'll have to pay for it." 0

"Ah, oh, yes!" 0

Tie Zhu quickly put his hands down, grabbed the bucket beside him, and splashed water onto the flames. The small fire was immediately extinguished, turning into wisps of blue smoke. 0

Tie Zhu clapped his hands, feeling very satisfied with his contribution. The house belonging to his fellow villager was saved, and he wouldn't have to pay for any damages. 0

Hu Lian wandered around the first floor and noticed traces of a grenade explosion. "What’s your name?" 0

Tie Zhu grinned, "Reporting, Commander, my name is Zhao Tiezhu, from Dabie Mountain. I just joined the army this year." 0

Hu Lian nodded, "Did you just engage with the Japanese? I heard an explosion in here; was that you?" 0

Tie Zhu scratched his head innocently and nodded, "Two Japanese soldiers came in, but I took care of both of them." 0

"Oh? You took down both of them? Where are the bodies? Kid, don’t exaggerate; the Little Devils are not easy to deal with." Xu Staff Officer was somewhat skeptical. This rookie claimed to have killed two enemies, while the casualty ratio this morning was as high as eleven to one—eleven Kuomintang soldiers were lost for every one Japanese soldier taken down! 0

Tie Zhu paid no mind to Xu Staff Officer's doubts. With a silly grin, he led Hu Lian and the others to the staircase and pointed, "They're over there, but it's a bit disgusting. I felt like throwing up when I saw them; I already emptied my stomach earlier. It’s noon and I haven’t eaten, so my stomach feels uncomfortable." 0

Hu Lian and Xu Staff Officer climbed the stairs. At the corner lay two dead Japanese soldiers; one had half of his head missing, while the other was riddled with bullet holes. 0

Hu Lian showed no signs of discomfort at the bloody scene and examined it closely before asking curiously, "Did you kill these Japanese soldiers? What weapon did you use?" 0

Tie Zhu shyly scratched his head again, "Earlier at the entrance outside, my Shunliu Brother and I captured a Japanese machine gun—a big one that weighs dozens of pounds. I struggled a lot to bring it in; it’s on the second floor. Commander, let me show you; that thing packs a punch! A few bursts and the Japanese were taken down; it’s very powerful!" 0

After saying that, Tie Zhu ran up the stairs excitedly, shedding all previous discomforts as if he were a child showing off a beloved toy. 0

Hu Lian smiled and nodded, following behind him. He was quite pleased with this new recruit. 0
