After I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, my husband brought home a woman with prominent curves and a slightly protruding belly, pressuring me to get a divorce.
I clutched my husband's medical report and sneered. I threw the report in his face. He looked at the report with dilated pupils, reading "Confirm Male Sperm Development Disorder."
"You're the one with low sperm count; are you sure that child in her belly is yours?" I said as I turned to leave.
My husband grabbed my arm, pleading, "Please, don't go."
I broke free and slapped him several times. "Don't come near me, you coward."
In my previous life, my husband and I had been married for two years without having children. My mother-in-law treated me coldly and constantly urged me to go to the hospital for tests, even putting half a bottle of vinegar in my noodle soup, claiming it would help determine the gender of the baby.
Feeling pressured, I eventually agreed to go for the tests.
One morning, my mother-in-law and husband came to wake me up hand in hand. In two years of marriage, my husband and I had spent less than six months sleeping together. My mother-in-law said, "I'm afraid of the dark; I want my son to sleep with me."
I felt embarrassed to say anything at that moment and reluctantly agreed, "Um... okay, Mom. Let Shuhua sleep with you tonight; I'll be fine alone."
I didn't expect my mother-in-law and husband to act like a couple; I felt like a third wheel as they did everything together—washing dishes, cooking, working. They even bathed together!
One time, my mother-in-law said, "Oh dear, it's so hot in summer. Xiaohua, do you want to take a shower? Mom will need you to scrub my back later; why not just wash together?"
"Sure, Mom," my husband replied cheerfully without noticing my shocked expression as they went into the bathroom together. They probably slept together last night too.
I got out of bed and tidied myself up a bit before doing my hair. While applying lipstick, my mother-in-law sarcastically remarked, "Oh dear, look at how old you are; don't you ever check yourself in the mirror? Putting on lipstick like that is just laughable."
I looked at her wrinkled face covered in thick foundation and forced a smile as I replied, "I understand."
The hospital was crowded as we sat waiting on chairs. I was scrolling through my phone while my mother-in-law leaned her head on my husband's shoulder, whispering something to him.
"Ding Ling Ling, Ding Ling Ling, your little darling is calling~"
A ringtone sounded, and I turned to look at my husband, who showed a hint of panic on his face.
"Who is it? What ringtone?" I asked.
He hung up the phone and said, "A colleague, it's an automated ringtone."
"Why didn't you answer your colleague's call?" I felt something was off.
He didn't respond, but my mother-in-law seemed to have been stepped on the tail as she shouted, "Hey! You shameless one!"
"Do you even look like a daughter-in-law? It's been two years and you haven't heard a peep from your belly, yet you're meddling in everything with your husband?"
"When will you make some noise from your belly before you act so arrogantly?"
After scolding me for a while, my mother-in-law poked my husband and said, "Go answer the phone and see what Xiao Na wants."
My husband stood up and walked toward the corner.
"I'm almost next in line; let's wait until later to call," I said.
My mother-in-law slapped my leg hard and said, "Don't you have legs of your own? Can't you get in by yourself?"
I held my aching leg and said, "This check-up requires both partners to be present."
"Present for what? My son can't have any problems!" my mother-in-law retorted harshly.
I explained, "That's not what I meant."
My husband returned after the call, beaming with a smile.
"Why are you so impatient every day? I'm back now; did I delay your check-up?" my mother-in-law said sarcastically.
My husband leaned close to her and whispered something that made her suddenly exclaim with joy, "Is it happening?!"
After saying that, she quickly glanced at me. I asked, "What's happening?"
My husband calmly replied, "Nothing," seemingly unwilling to say another word to me.
Then they continued their mysterious whispering conversation.
