"You are how..." Miao Chengmin was bewildered, his brows furrowed as he stared at Virgil, his fists clenched and slightly raised, seemingly ready to strike at any moment.
"Hmph." This was the first time Virgil experienced the taste of a wish coming true; the pride and superiority in her heart made her lift her face to look at Miao Chengmin. "What's wrong, Captain? Is it unexpected for you? After all, I am the soul that has lived the longest in the Divine Realm among all Vanguard members. As far as I know, aside from the long-term rulers in the temple, the oldest souls in the Divine Realm have only lived for a little over two hundred years before reincarnating across dimensions. And I have lived for over three hundred days; I should be the one with the most knowledge, which is why I understand Chaos Crystals the best. Although luck played a part in gaining their favor, I am not like you, so ignorant and foolish."
"Your determination to guard the Chaos Crystals is indeed touching, but at the same time, your ignorance makes me want to laugh out loud. We were downgraded back to Earth; is it really as glorious as King said? All souls, including myself, are merely pawns used by him for his schemes. Just like so-called ideologies, these imagined concepts may control your minds, but they absolutely cannot control mine! I know what I need to do; don't even think about using so-called righteousness to hijack my moral views!"
"What should we do?" Tu Jiaomin stood up, his gaze fixed on Virgil but directing his words toward Miao Chengmin. "She is an ambitious person." In Virgil's eyes, both of them chose silence regarding their "declaration."
Miao Chengmin understood Tu Jiaomin's meaning; he was trying to comprehend Virgil's perspective. "Virgil, come down. Let's talk this through. We are all just and righteous individuals from the Divine Realm; I believe you must want to become stronger to protect the Chaos Crystals, right..."
"Ha, ha ha! What are you saying!" Virgil laughed loudly, looking up at the sky. "Justice? Tell me what justice is, Captain! Is any means that benefits humanity considered justice? Back when my people were plundered one by one by pioneers who took them to see broader lands, wasn't that also a contribution to humanity? So which side is just? Now let's look at it from today's perspective: if any action that benefits a group is called justice, then when Ban Sa led the Moon People to expand their territory and increase their living space, isn't that also considered justice? Ordinary people always live in fairy tales; only those who are awake know that cruelty and cannibalism are the norm."
All zombies fell silent, especially Tu Jiaomin, who even nodded slightly. Having been wealthy in life, he understood Virgil's words best.
"I don't want to waste my Time on you anymore. With death looming over me, is there anything else you want to say? I will carry your will forward and fulfill my wishes that I couldn't achieve in life."
"Death looming?!" Miao Chengmin and the zombies behind Tu Jiaomin suddenly panicked; they didn't know Virgil's power but were certain that together they were no match for her.
The previously silent Tu Jiaomin felt a surge of anger: "Virgil! We have so many brothers behind us; don't involve them. If you're brave enough, come at us!"
"Fine." A cluster of black flame-like substance suddenly rose in Virgil's hand. "I will kill; you can do as you please."
Seeing things getting worse, Miao Chengmin quickly spread his arms to shield Tu Jiaomin and urged him to step back while raising another hand to signal Virgil to stop: "We don't want to fight! Virgil, considering that we have all returned to Earth together and share life and death, please show mercy this once. We admit we are no match for you! But if you kill us, how will you live on Earth? Do you plan to wait alone on this planet until the Transmigration Hall resumes operation? You won't fare well either! Besides, we have no grievances or grudges against you; why kill us?"
Upon hearing this, Virgil seemed to consider it; the flames in her palm slowly subsided.
"Alright." Virgil looked at the panicking Zombie Horde as if watching a play and glanced at Miao Chengmin and Tu Jiaomin again. "I won't kill you this time. From now on, we part ways; I won't stay in such a place begrudgingly. Also, I'll take the Chaos Crystals with me; goodbye."
"No way!" Miao Chengmin could no longer hold back. "What exactly do you want?!"
"Isn't my intention clear enough?" Virgil raised her head and thought for a moment. "I will destroy this world that should not exist. The first step is to create my own army."
Chaos Crystals do not possess the ability to create life like Life Crystals do but can grant a false soul to already deceased organisms or implant a new soul into a dead body. This is where its power differs most from Life Crystals.
When completing the soul's dimensional descent injection, the Divine Realm borrowed this ability from Chaos Crystals; thus, those like Miao Chengmin now resemble zombies while the former are akin to true zombies.
Miao Chengmin shook his head, still trying to persuade Virgil who had already turned back: "Please return the Chaos Crystals to us; that's our reason for existence."
"You no longer have any meaning of existence," Virgil sneered. "I told you not to use so-called righteousness to bind me; destruction is inevitable, and I will represent immortality."
It seemed that because of Virgil's words, a wave of heat suddenly surged from her hand; she was startled and looked down at her hand holding Chaos Crystals. At this moment, the Chaos Crystals were exhibiting a blood-red state and emitting intense burning sensations—just as legends described them—as if they were a supernatural entity warning something.
Zombies do not feel pain or burning sensations; the only explanation is that Chaos Crystals were releasing sensations unique to four-dimensional worlds, causing Virgil's soul to feel as if it were being scorched.
"Hot!" The sudden surge of heat caught Virgil off guard. Instinctively, she threw the Chaos Crystals into the air, but hesitated to let them go, reaching out again to grab them. However, the intense heat made it impossible for her to hold on. Her hand trembled violently from the burn, and finally, she flung the Chaos Crystals away. She was certain she couldn't hold onto them, and neither could the other zombies.
“She threw it down!” The zombies gasped in surprise. At the same time, almost instinctively as a firefighter, Miao Chengmin leaped forward and dove onto the Chaos Crystals.
"You won't get burned to death." Virgil watched him as if he were a monkey.
Initially, Miao Chengmin did feel a searing pain, causing him to gasp as the pain shot through his arms. But strangely, the intense heat from the Chaos Crystals quickly dissipated, cooling down gradually under the watchful eyes of the other zombies.
As a former firefighter, Miao Chengmin was all too familiar with such heat. Yet even so, when he dove forward, he had no thoughts of survival; he only wanted to protect the crystals at any cost. To him, his life was as simple as throwing away a stone.
However, just when Virgil thought he would let go, Miao Chengmin flipped over and lay on the ground, cradling the Chaos Crystals in his arms. The crystals had returned to their original pale white color as if nothing had happened.
"Why!" Virgil shouted in frustration. "Why is it fine with you!"
What none of the other zombies knew was that the Chaos Crystals were indeed alive. Virgil had read about this in a book but didn't believe it. The Time-Space King had told Miao Chengmin during their conversation that the two crystals possessed life—before them, there were no secrets; they could see what kind of soul you were. Once you were recognized by them, you would naturally absorb the power of the Chaos Crystals without needing any guidance from me.
Another reason why the Chaos Crystals chose another successor was that in their judgment, destruction was the rightful destination. To achieve this, opposing conflict was the only necessary path. Everything needed a corresponding opposite to destroy itself in order to fulfill its purpose of annihilation. On this planet, the Chaos Crystals found no sufficiently threatening presence to Virgil at that moment; therefore, they had to create an existence whose soul and power stood in opposition to hers to fulfill their fundamental setting in this universe—everything has opposites, and opposites lead to destruction.
Miao Chengmin was chosen by the Chaos Crystals as Virgil's opposing force. In their judgment, nothing should be eternal; eternity violated their most basic principle.
"Ugh!" Confused and furious, Virgil opened her hands and summoned a cluster of black flames from anti-Cosmic Energy that surged down towards Miao Chengmin like a vengeful spirit.
“Be careful!” Tu Jiaomin rushed forward and leaped high into the air. In his zombie form, his soul body possessed great strength; with this leap, he soared four or five meters high and intercepted Virgil from the side, blocking her hand as they both fell over the edge of a cliff.
“Awwooo—” The Zombie Wolf followed suit and jumped down.
"You guys!" Miao Chengmin reached out to call them back, but not all souls could restrain themselves like he could. His fingertips traced an arc as they fell; whether they lived or died was beyond his knowledge. He immediately got up and instinctively held onto the Chaos Crystals tightly.
"I need your justice to achieve destruction."
An ethereal echo gradually became clear in Miao Chengmin's consciousness. Soon a force lifted him along with the Chaos Crystals into midair. In his astonished gaze, countless rays of light surged from the Chaos Crystals. As more points emerged, Miao Chengmin noticed these points formed a pattern that resembled what was behind Virgil—a symmetrical design.
No, it was a mirrored version of those patterns.
The rays began to twist as Miao Chengmin's head became the center of a magnetic field; all light focused on his forehead. Streams resembling brilliant glowing IV tubes filled with countless short strings continuously flowed into Miao Chengmin's mind. Unlike Virgil's experience, what Miao Chengmin felt was instead a gentleness.
He squinted his eyes slightly and savored this touch like sunlight.
"See? Your so-called warrior is so fragile."
This statement pulled Miao Chengmin out of his reverie. He opened his eyes and shook his limbs violently to wake himself up but found himself staring at Virgil rising from below the cliff edge, holding Tu Jiaomin's head which had been smashed down to just its cheekbones in one hand while gripping Zombie Wolf's tail with the other. Her entire body swayed weakly before she carelessly tossed it in front of Miao Chengmin.
"No!" Miao Chengmin shouted, his voice piercing the air. At that moment, sadness engulfed him like a tsunami, consuming his entire being. He couldn't shed a tear, but he had completely broken down. Floating in mid-air, he pounded his fists against the ground desperately, but it was futile. In despair, he gritted his teeth and looked up at Virgil, whose eyes glowed with a white hue reminiscent of a shroud. However, he failed to notice the change in her expression as she realized that Miao Chengmin had somehow developed a pair of flame-like black pupils that clashed with her own white ones.
"Did she kill Tu Jiaomin?!"
"She's really dead!"
Panic erupted among the zombies, followed by a furious roar from their midst: "Kill her! If she doesn't die, the Chaos Crystals will be in danger! We fight for Brother Miao's time!"
"Kill her—"
The zombies surged towards Virgil, who had fallen to the ground, their battle cries shaking the air as dust and smoke rose around them, threatening to engulf her.
"Like a mantis trying to stop a chariot," Virgil said, hands on her hips, watching them charge forward as if they were children making fools of themselves. She discarded Tu Jiaomin's body like trash and summoned a ball of black flames in her hand, ready to hurl it at the Zombie Horde.
The energy of the anti-Cosmic Energy was immense; each small orb could be likened to a Xiao Hei hole. If it detonated within the Zombie Horde, two or three would likely annihilate them all.
With a whoosh, the black flames were thrown towards the Zombie Horde, and tragedy seemed inevitable.
Suddenly! A figure descended and unfolded a black Chaos Barrier before the Zombie Horde. The black fireball struck it like raindrops hitting a lake's surface, creating ripples.
Virgil could hardly believe her eyes. Upon closer inspection, Miao Chengmin was already able to extend his hands and lift the Chaos Barrier. The spot where the barrier had been struck rippled with an almost transparent vacancy through which Miao Chengmin's left eye could be seen. He lowered his head and glared at Virgil through the barrier, his gaze reminiscent of the last warmth of sunset on Judgment Day.
"Come back for your life!"
Miao Chengmin roared fiercely and lunged forward! A tiny portion of energy from the Chaos Crystals had infused into his own soul body; among all the zombies, only he could confront Virgil head-on.
"Come on!" Virgil's aura matched his intensity as she raised her fist toward him. A wave of white mist-like energy surged around her arm!
"Boom—"
But in an instant, Virgil summoned a ball of fire with her other hand and hurled it at Miao Chengmin! The stalemate was shattered as Miao Chengmin was sent flying against the mountainside, momentarily stunned. Virgil immediately took flight, her hand claw-like as she aimed to take his life! However, Miao Chengmin’s background as a firefighter gave him reflexes far quicker than ordinary people; he dodged Virgil's incoming punch just in time!
The destructive force of that punch showcased the power possessed by sentient zombies—just like themselves. The fist smashed into the mountainside with a thunderous crash, sending rocks flying and creating shockwaves.
Before Virgil could react, Miao Chengmin launched a kick that sent her sprawling to the ground. He then grabbed her by the neck with both hands, squeezing tightly as if he wanted to snap it right there.
"You die!" Miao Chengmin had completely lost control of his emotions and now truly resembled a zombie.
