The car sped down the highway, and Lan Baobao gazed out the window at the trees rushing by, feeling a sense of nostalgia wash over her. How could she be upset by Ye Zixun's attitude? That was too melodramatic; after all, she was a mother of two.
Ye Zixun was also angry. He was furious that Lan Baobao remembered their marriage contract so clearly and had blurted it out. Did she not take him, the distinguished young master of the Ye Family, seriously? Therefore, it was necessary to teach Lan Baobao a lesson at this stage.
"Alright, we've arrived," Ye Zixun said as he slowly brought the car to a stop, finally speaking to Lan Baobao.
Lan Baobao was taken aback; how had they arrived home so quickly? She thought there was still a long way to go. It seemed that daydreaming could really waste time.
"Oh, okay. I'll head inside first then," Lan Baobao said, pretending to sound cheerful as she bid farewell to Ye Zixun.
Seeing the playful and cute Lan Baobao, much of Ye Zixun's frustration dissipated.
"Yeah. Go on in; I'll be back early," Ye Zixun replied with a feigned indifference, though he could have outright rejected Yan Momo's proposal. However, he wanted to see for himself what tricks Yan Momo was up to. In truth, Ye Zixun held grudges, especially against those heartless scoundrels; the more malicious they were, the more he remembered their wrongs.
Anyone who dared to bully the Cloud Emperor would not end up well.
When Lan Baobao returned home alone, she was met with concerned gazes from everyone in the house—men, women, and children alike. Yet, not a single person dared to ask what had happened.
Eventually, Mumu broke the silence.
"Mommy, why did you come back alone? Where's Dad?" Mumu asked angrily. They had left together that morning; how could she return alone in the evening? Something must have happened.
"That's right, Baobao. If there's anything going on, Grandpa will take care of it," Grandpa Ye said with authority. He still liked this adorable girl very much. Besides, she was the biological mother of Mumu and Ruo Ruo—the great contributor to the Ye Family.
Lan Baobao couldn't help but laugh at the words of both the elder and the child; her earlier discomfort faded away. Living in the Ye Family Mansion wasn't as devoid of warmth as she had imagined; everyone here was quite welcoming.
"Um, Grandpa, it's nothing. Ye Zixun had some social engagements today, and I felt I couldn't help much, so I came back first. No one bullied me," Lan Baobao explained earnestly.
Only then did Grandpa Ye feel relieved. To be honest, he sometimes thought his grandson didn't deserve someone as gentle and lovely as Lan Baobao. He knew all too well about his grandson's shortcomings.
Mumu wasn't as easily appeased as Grandpa Ye. Although he hadn't voiced any questions at that moment, doubts lingered in his mind. He could tell his mom was lying; her storytelling skills were still as poor as ever.
"Mommy, your face looks a bit pale. You should go rest in your room," Ruo Ruo observed carefully. The soft voice of the child made Lan Baobao's heart soften instantly.
Lan Baobao walked over to Ruo Ruo and immediately hugged her tightly. She gently kissed Ruo Ruo's forehead and said softly, "Our Ruo Ruo is so good, already knowing to care for Mommy."
Ruo Ruo giggled, and Grandpa Ye, who was watching this scene, felt a bit emotional.
"Mommy, you should go back to your room and sleep. My brother and I, along with Great-Grandfather, will play for a while longer before we go to sleep," Ruo Ruo said in a sweet voice, sounding incredibly adorable. Lan Baobao was instantly smitten.
"Okay, okay. Mommy will go up now." After saying that, Lan Baobao kissed Ruo Ruo's forehead again, then greeted Grandpa Ye and Mumu before heading back to her room. She was indeed feeling a bit tired.
After closing the door, Lan Baobao released her fatigue and quietly leaned against the bed in a daze. Her heart felt very heavy, an inexplicable sensation; she was clearly healthy but felt terribly uncomfortable.
Lan Baobao glanced at the clock on the wall; the hour hand had already passed eleven. She couldn't help but start worrying about Ye Zixun. It was late; could something have happened? Or had Yan Momo and Pan Xinzi, those two troublemakers, done something to Ye Zixun? The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. She hurriedly took out her phone and began calling Ye Zixun.
The phone rang repeatedly, but no one answered. Lan Baobao's heart sank. Her anxiety slowly expanded, spreading to every corner of her being.
Refusing to give up, she dialed again and again. After countless attempts, Ye Zixun's phone finally connected. At that moment, Lan Baobao felt a surge of relief mixed with tears of joy, as if she had regained something lost.
However, when the person on the other end spoke, Lan Baobao's heart sank completely.
"Hello? Who are you looking for?" Yan Momo's voice came through the phone, which was undoubtedly a huge blow to Lan Baobao.
"Where is Ye Zixun? Yan Momo, why are you answering his phone?" Lan Baobao questioned Yan Momo with suppressed anger.
On the other end of the line, Yan Momo sat on the sofa and sneered at Lan Baobao's words.
"Why are you getting angry at me when you can't even take care of your own husband? Lan Baobao, who do you think you are?" Yan Momo mocked Lan Baobao without holding back at all; if Lan Baobao were in front of her now, she would definitely be in for a beating.
"This has nothing to do with you. Yan Momo, where is Ye Zixun?" Lan Baobao didn't want to listen to Yan Momo's nonsense because she was genuinely afraid she couldn't handle what Yan Momo might say next.
"Don't worry about it, Lan Baobao. President Ye went to the restroom and is too busy to answer your call. I'm hanging up now." After saying that, Yan Momo hung up decisively. In the private room, she smirked maliciously; now let's see how Lan Baobao would act after knowing her husband was cheating on her—only a fool would believe that Lan Baobao wouldn't be upset.
At that moment, Ye Zixun happened to come out of the restroom and saw his phone left on the sofa. He quickly walked over to grab it and checked for any missed calls. Seeing that the screen was still clean without any notifications made him feel relieved. Fortunately, he hadn't missed anything important. However, what Ye Zixun didn't know was that after Yan Momo hung up on Lan Baobao's call, she conveniently deleted the call log without leaving any trace.
"President Ye, let's have another drink," Yan Momo said as she filled her glass with wine and raised it toward Ye Zixun. Ye Zixun raised an eyebrow but didn't refuse. He had to admit that Yan Momo was quite experienced when it came to dealing with men; if he hadn't already known about her character beforehand, he might have half-heartedly accepted her advances today.
Ye Zixun glanced at Pan Xinzi, who was already drunk like a dead pig, a hint of sarcasm crossing his lips. This man simply lacked the guts. Yan Momo saw Ye Zixun cooperating with her and felt her chances of winning increased, joy immediately showing on her face.
"Sister Yan, after this drink, I really have to go home. Just so you know, this is the last drink," Ye Zixun said calmly, dousing Yan Momo with cold water and severely undermining her confidence.
"President Ye, why don't we find a place..." Yan Momo's words were quite skillful and truly appealed to Ye Zixun. However, recalling what this woman had done to Lan Baobao in the past, Ye Zixun's expression immediately turned cold.
"Find a place to keep drinking? Sister Yan, your fiancé is still lying over there. Alright, I'll finish this drink and then excuse myself," Ye Zixun downed the drink in one go, very decisively.
Yan Momo looked at the manly Ye Zixun, her desire to win him over growing even stronger.
"And one more thing, Sister Yan. I hope this matter ends here; you should know better." As he reached the door, Ye Zixun paused and left this harsh remark for Yan Momo. He left the delicate Yan Momo alone in the private room facing a drunkard, feeling extremely awkward.
Meanwhile, since Yan Momo hung up the phone, Lan Baobao had been in a daze. Staring blankly at her phone that flickered on and off, Lan Baobao's heart was filled with mixed emotions. She never expected that Ye Zixun's phone would be answered by Yan Momo; in Lan Baobao's impression, Ye Zixun was someone who disliked others touching his personal belongings. Yet his phone appeared in Yan Momo's hands. What did this mean? Could it be that the tragedy from five years ago was about to repeat itself? Lan Baobao dared not think further.
Suddenly, Lan Baobao felt warmth on her face. She reached out to wipe it away and found it was tears. Lan Baobao smiled bitterly; she had actually cried because of Ye Zixun. She felt she must have lost her mind; otherwise, why would she shed tears for no reason?
"Mommy, why are you crying?" Mumu wanted to sneak in to see his mommy while she was asleep but unexpectedly found her in tears as soon as he entered. In Mumu's memory, Lan Baobao had never cried. No matter how tough or exhausting life got, Lan Baobao never shed a single tear; she just gritted her teeth and persisted while smiling happily every day. But now she was crying, which made Mumu very angry.
"Mumu?" Lan Baobao panicked upon seeing her son suddenly enter and quickly wiped away her tears, fearing he might think too much. "Why aren't you asleep at this hour? What are you doing in Mommy's room?"
