"It seems you know each other. May I ask what your relationship is?"
"Yes, we know each other. Jiang Yufei worked with him during her lifetime. But it was just an acquaintance; she was quite eccentric and had little interaction with my family, so I wouldn't say we had a close relationship."
"Eccentric?" Yan Xiaoque suddenly appeared, holding a light blue notebook with a magnetic back, without any food in hand.
"I discovered a secret," she said, flipping open the notebook. "I took this from the fridge. I didn't expect your senior's home to be so romantic."
Park Chi leaned in for a closer look. Each page of the notebook was dated, starting with "Lovely You Today's Recipe," followed by several dish names, playfully illustrated with crabs, fish, celery, potatoes, and more in different colored pens. At the bottom of each page was a pink "kiss" and three peculiar signatures in white, blue, and purple.
Gu Cheng stroked the notebook, his expression filled with unspoken sorrow. "All of this was written by Jiang Yufei. She would discuss the next day's recipes with me every night. While I was at work, that silly girl would go to the supermarket to buy ingredients and cook for me according to the recipes."
"Jiang Yufei led a simple life and had almost no friends. After she became pregnant, it was inconvenient for her to go out; at most, she would take a walk downstairs. Every evening, she would sit quietly reading books or newspapers, waiting for me to come home so we could have dinner together." The man turned to look at the empty wicker chair, and silence enveloped the surroundings.
Yan Xiaoque picked up a newspaper from the edge of the pond, folded it neatly, and placed a hand on Gu Cheng's shoulder. "Senior, please pull yourself together. The only thing we can do for her now," her eyes were clear yet resolute, "is to uncover the truth as soon as possible."
The man remained silent for a while before finally saying, "Is there anything I can do to help you?"
"Of course!" Park Chi encouraged him. "For instance, you could recall more details—besides what you've already recorded—about anything you might have overlooked regarding your wife's disappearance that day." He took out a document from his briefcase. "You stated that your wife went missing after 4 PM on August 17th. You were at work that day and called home around four o'clock to inform her that you were attending a gathering and told her not to wait for you to eat. She answered the call. Then when you got home around six that evening, you found she was gone. Is that correct?" The officer's gaze suddenly sharpened. "So, Mr. Gu, why didn't you report it to the police? Given that your wife had no social connections and was pregnant, you should have been quite worried about her sudden disappearance."
"I didn't report it because I suspected she was with someone," Gu Cheng said as he walked to the window and abruptly pulled back the curtains, trembling as he pointed toward a balcony across the street. His body slumped as he murmured repeatedly in anguish, "I was wrong..."
Park Chi quickly helped him back up and sat him down on the sofa again. Yan Xiaoque appeared with a cup of water from somewhere and handed it to him. In that moment of eye contact, Gu Cheng clearly felt the silent comfort from both of them.
“Lu Kai…” Gu Cheng took the water, hesitated for a moment, and said, “He was actually Jiang Yufei’s boyfriend during their time at Yu Fei University.”
“Ah?” Park Chi immediately jumped up from the sofa upon hearing this. “But no one mentioned they were in a relationship when we investigated the travel agency!” Meanwhile, the girl beside him remained seated, as if she had expected this.
“They broke up in their junior year due to personality clashes. That’s why many people are unaware of their past. It’s clear that even after the breakup, Lu Kai still loved Jiang Yufei. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to work at the same place as her and later move here. Jiang Yufei is very cold towards others, but I think privately, she still harbors some special feelings for Lu Kai; after all, he was her first love.” Gu Cheng raised his glass, his hands trembling slightly. “You must have investigated and found out that Lu Kai has never given up on Jiang Yufei. He often clings to her and even sends gifts to my family. On the second day after Jiang Yufei and I got married, he had someone deliver a pot of flowers. The moment Jiang Yufei saw that congratulatory gift, her expression changed. It was then that I learned about their previous relationship from her.”
“Was the flower Lu Kai sent that day a Viola Tricolor?” Yan Xiaoque suddenly interjected with a clear voice. Park Chi looked confused, but Gu Cheng was greatly surprised. “How did you know?”
“When I visited your home, I smelled a unique floral fragrance. Since it’s rare, I couldn’t recall it at first, but just now when I saw this, I was able to confirm.” She flipped open her notebook again and pointed to the end of the recipe page. “The three small dots in white, blue, and purple are actually simple marks your wife Jiang Yufei used to represent herself, which appear at the end of each page. This is also the basic form of her favorite flower—the petals intersecting in three colors with a unique fragrance: Poland's National Flower, Viola Tricolor. Considering your wife was not fond of socializing during her lifetime, it’s easy to imagine who would know about her preference.”
