Lin Yun was said to come from a poor background, yet he was the top student in his department. He had just received the only scholarship for graduate studies, and it seemed he was working part-time singing outside to gather living expenses. To keep this a secret, he hid his face behind his long hair.
But why was he now willing to meet Xu Bei and the others? Did he no longer care about concealing his identity as a street performer?
With these questions in mind, Su Yu and a group of girls returned to campus. As they walked past the dormitory area, they passed a tailor shop when suddenly a voice called out from inside, “Hey, you! Stop!” It was the beautiful shop owner, Shen Jia, pointing at Su Yu and shouting, “As soon as you and your classmate left, I noticed that the Flower Cloth draped over Stone Monkey is missing! You must have stolen it!”
“Come on! Why would we steal your Flower Cloth?” Su Yu retorted angrily. Being accused of theft was something he could not tolerate. “After we left, so many students entered your shop; who knows who took it?”
Shen Jia was momentarily speechless; after all, she had no evidence to prove that Su Yu had stolen the Flower Cloth. She muttered to herself, “I’m so unlucky; I just took over the shop today and have already lost several pieces of Flower Cloth…” But she still threw out a harsh warning, “Hmph! You delinquent students better watch out for Stone Monkey’s curse; you might end up meeting an untimely death!”
“Wow, you’re really something!” Su Yu laughed but didn’t dwell on it. He turned back and continued walking with Xu Bei and the others toward Boys' Dormitory Three.
Xu Bei had already arranged over the phone to meet Wandering Singer downstairs at Boys' Dormitory Three. However, when Su Yu and his group arrived, they waited and waited but saw no sign of Lin Yun. Could it be that Lin Yun wasn’t Wandering Singer? They also didn’t spot any young man with long hair nearby.
Growing impatient, Su Yu said, “I’ll go check room 407.” Just as he was about to head upstairs, he spotted Wang Xiaofeng coming from the cafeteria with a full lunchbox, ready to go upstairs. “Eating so early?” Su Yu asked. It was only a little past five; it did seem a bit early for dinner.
Wang Xiaofeng cheerfully replied, “The early bird gets the worm; those who go to the cafeteria early get sweet and sour ribs!” He was holding a box of sweet and sour ribs that emitted an enticing aroma.
Su Yu swallowed hard and went upstairs with Wang Xiaofeng. On their way up, Su Yu shared with Wang Xiaofeng about Lin Yun possibly performing outside to make ends meet. Wang Xiaofeng expressed admiration for Lin Yun and said, “I want to check out this guitar prince too!”
The fourth floor was empty since most seniors were out on internships or job hunting.
Standing outside Room 407, Su Yu knocked on the door, only to find it slightly ajar. Pushing it open gently, a strange odor wafted out. At the same moment, Su Yu and Wang Xiaofeng caught sight of a shadow hanging from the beam, swaying back and forth.
They both let out a sharp scream.
It was a cold corpse, with a thick rope wrapped around its neck, the other end tied to the light fixture. The deceased was Lin Yun, who had long hair. Beside his body lay an old guitar. Su Yu peeked into the bathroom and saw that the sink was filled with water, in which floated a worn-out Brick Phone. The smell in the bathroom was peculiar, reminiscent of detergent.
Su Yu quickly called the police. Just as he hung up, he noticed that Lin Yun's fist was tightly clenched, with something colorful peeking out between his fingers. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a piece of Flower Cloth, identical to the one they had seen draped over the Stone Monkey's hand at the tailor shop.
