I listened with my mouth agape, my mind swirling in confusion while simultaneously feeling a sense of clarity. Once V finished speaking, I collected my thoughts, took a deep breath, and reflected on the situation. I found V's deductions reasonable and likely very close to the truth.
However, suddenly a question popped into my mind, and I blurted out, "Wait! Since Liao Mengwei didn't enter that office, how did she seal the door?"
"Very simple, she used fishing line. Liao Mengwei had previously looped a piece of fishing line around the doorknob of that office, securing both ends at a nearby location. After quickly moving out of your and C Girl's sight, Liao Mengwei went to where she had secured the ends of the fishing line and pulled hard, sealing the door. Then, she could just release one end of the fishing line to retrieve it all."
"Ah?" I was slightly taken aback. "It’s that simple?"
"Yes, but because you and C Girl stubbornly believed that X had entered the office, you insisted that the door must have been sealed by someone inside, without considering other methods."
I took a sharp breath and continued, "There’s another issue: Huo Xingjing told me that there were blood footprints near A Man's body leading to the feet of the man who was hanged in the office. The blood on those footprints belonged to A Man, and they matched the shoes worn by the hanged man. In fact, it was not that man who killed A Man but Liao Mengwei. According to what you said, Liao Mengwei never entered that office after killing A Man. So why would her blood-stained shoes end up on the feet of that hanged man? If she never entered the office, how could she have put those shoes on him?"
"This is also quite simple," V replied calmly. "Before you all arrived at the company, Liao Mengwei used a syringe to draw a vial of blood from the unconscious A Man and stained it on the shoes of the man who was later hanged. Then, wearing those shoes, Liao Mengwei walked into Executive Director's office and placed them back on the feet of that man. After the blood footprints dried up, Liao Mengwei laid down a layer of plastic bags that closely matched the color of the floor along the path from the company entrance to in front of the office door to cover those footprints. After killing A Man, when Liao Mengwei walked toward the office, she stayed on top of that layer of plastic bags so as not to leave new footprints. Moreover, since she didn’t step where there were original footprints, she didn’t disturb them either. At the same time she detonated A Man's bomb, she pulled up the plastic bags and then tugged on the fishing line to seal the door. The steps—detonating the bomb, exiting from witness sight, retrieving the plastic bags, and pulling on the fishing line to close the door—were all completed seamlessly without any interruption."
"That’s truly impeccable reasoning!" I exclaimed. "Yes, our company has a back door; after completing those actions, Liao Mengwei escaped through it. Additionally, many colleagues know that B Man has been secretly in love with Liao Mengwei; this must be why B Man was willing to become her accomplice. Also, why did Liao Mengwei throw down the axe before heading toward the office? Because she didn’t intend to enter it; she had to discard the axe first; otherwise, if we found no axe in the office later on, her scheme would have been exposed."
"Indeed, your deductions are spot on." V acknowledged my words but with an extremely cold demeanor; there was no hint of praise in his tone.
"I really appreciate your help in unraveling this mystery," I said sincerely.
The stone of mystery had been set down, yet I felt no sense of relief. My heart seemed to be weighed down by another heavy stone.
"The mystery is solved; what about your heart?" V said softly.
"What?" I didn't quite catch what he said at first.
But he didn't repeat himself. Instead, he stared at the ceiling, let out a soft sigh, and casually said, "I'm tired. You can go now."
After saying goodbye to V and leaving that rented room, I walked alone on the desolate street. Watching the cars pass by on the road and the hurried crowd around me, my heart felt lost, as if I had lost all sense of direction.
