Blackbeard glared fiercely at the patrons of the tavern and declared, "None of you will escape."
Like the rushing waters of the Yangtze River, darkness instantly enveloped the tavern floor and began to spread outward. Everything in its path was drawn into it.
"What is this thing?"
"It feels quite dangerous; it's best not to touch it!"
The darkness drifted like sludge around the legs of the lower-tier pirates. The inexperienced pirates, unaware of its menace, even reached out to touch it, emboldened by their drunkenness.
"It's nothing; look at me, I'm fine. It's all just a scare tactic," Liu Daban said, his face slightly flushed with alcohol as he proudly addressed the other pirates. "Back in my day, I..."
"How dare you! Your body..."
Liu Daban had expected his bravado to earn him admiration, perhaps even a free refill of rum, but instead, he was met with expressions of terror.
Confused, he looked down and saw that his body was half-buried in darkness, sinking deeper with every moment. No matter how hard he struggled, it was futile.
At that moment, everyone realized that the darkness that had only just submerged their legs was now consuming them entirely. Their frantic attempts to escape were in vain.
"Why is this happening?"
Even as the darkness swallowed their last finger, they could not comprehend what was occurring.
Wherever the darkness passed, there was no escape...
"What is this thing? It feels so disgusting. And no matter how I shake it off, I can't get rid of it."
"Those pirates disappear once they're caught."
Luffy, true to his nickname of Monkey, was incredibly agile. Whenever the darkness threatened to bite at his heels, he always managed to leap away at the last moment.
"Ha ha ha! This is darkness! The kind that can obscure the sun!"
"Straw Hat Kid, you can't escape. As long as you're on this island, I can chase you forever."
Blackbeard laughed triumphantly. He wasn't sure if he could handle Luffy at Gear Fifth, after all, that was the form that had defeated Kaido.
But right now, Luffy had neither Gear Second nor Gear Third, and without Haki wrapped around him, what could he possibly use to fight back?
"Darkness, gnaw!"
Blackbeard reached out with his hand, and a surge of darkness erupted like a fountain towards the building where Luffy stood, gnawing away at it like a rabid dog.
"Rubber, rubber, bounce!"
Seeing the darkness about to consume the roof, Luffy curled his legs and used his rubber elasticity to leap away.
"Trying to run? Get down here!"
"Dark Vortex!"
As Luffy prepared to escape again, Blackbeard had no intention of playing a game of cat and mouse. He extended his left hand and activated his power directly.
In mid-air, Luffy suddenly changed direction and began moving towards Blackbeard.
"What’s happening? I jumped away!"
Luffy's face was filled with terror. How could something like this happen?
"Hahahahaha, this is my power!"
"When I activate my ability, I can accurately draw the body of the ability user towards me."
"As long as I unleash this power, no one can escape my range!"
"And then..."
Blackbeard grabbed Luffy and lifted him into the air.
"Rubber, rubber, rocket launcher!"
Luffy had intended to use his rubber rocket launcher to catch Blackbeard off guard at close range, but now his arms wouldn't stretch even a little!
"What's wrong? Have you realized it?"
"Luffy!"
"My body! What's happening?"
"How could this be?" Luffy's face was filled with disbelief.
The fact that his ability could be rendered ineffective was completely beyond his expectations.
Keep in mind, even if he fell into the ocean, his power wouldn't fail; he would just be weakened.
Blackbeard didn't care what Luffy was thinking. He said to Luffy:
"At last, it has fallen into my hands, Straw Hat Kid."
"The first step I need to take now..."
Blackbeard delivered a heavy punch to Luffy's stomach, causing blood to surge up his throat.
The first step was, of course, to render him incapable of resistance. What else could it be?
It wouldn’t do to just throw him away!
Who knew what kind of joke fate would play? If he tossed him out and someone else took him away, that would be a disaster.
Watching Luffy trapped in Blackbeard's grasp, Zoro felt anxious.
"This guy never lets anyone rest easy."
But regardless of that, as long as he was part of the Straw Hat Crew, he would remain loyal to his captain.
What he needed to do now was rescue Luffy from Blackbeard's clutches.
"Thirty-Six Troubles in a Lifetime,
One Sword Style,
Thirty-Six Troubling Winds."
Zoro adjusted his stance and swung forward with a slash, unleashing a wave of sword energy aimed at Blackbeard while steadily closing the distance.
He didn’t expect this attack to injure Blackbeard like before; he only hoped it would force him back and release Luffy.
The slash flew toward Blackbeard like a cannonball, swift and powerful.
Just as the blade was about to strike Blackbeard, he merely watched as the "Thirty-Six Troubling Winds" came at him, showing no reaction at all. Even the darkness swirling around him seemed to dissipate willingly.
What was he planning?
Could it be?
No, he intended to use Luffy as a shield to absorb his own attack!
Luffy, being a rubber user, was most vulnerable to slashing attacks!
But the strike had already been unleashed, and there was no turning back.
As the "Thirty-Six Troubling Winds" was about to hit Luffy, Zoro felt his heart leap into his throat.
"Luffy!"
Zoro shouted in regret.
"Clang."
A man with wings descended from the sky, blocking the attack with a slender sword.
Phew!
Thank goodness, Luffy was unharmed. If anything had happened to him, Zoro would have felt guilty for a lifetime.
However, the fact that someone could easily deflect his attack and was a Flying Ability User meant that he was facing an even tougher opponent.
"Please don't disturb our captain while he's in battle."
"That is certainly not the behavior of a gentleman."
The pale-faced man twirled his sword with an elegance reminiscent of a gentleman from ancient times and said, “Enough with the nonsense, Seventy-Two Troublesome Winds.”
“How rude,” came the retort.
Lafitte was already a skilled swordsman, and facing him put Zoro under immense pressure. He had to constantly watch his feet for any shadows lurking in the darkness, making the fight all the more difficult.
“Help! Luffy! Zoro!”
Just as Zoro was struggling to fend off Lafitte, Nami's desperate cries suddenly rang in his ears.
Hearing Nami's call for help momentarily distracted Zoro.
Lafitte seized this opportunity and thrust his sword into Zoro's body.
“Getting distracted during a fight is not good, rookie swordsman,” he taunted.
Zoro pressed his left hand against the wound while keeping his right hand on his sword, remaining vigilant against Lafitte. He shot back defiantly, “Using others to fight your battles shows you’re not much of a swordsman yourself.”
“I’m a pirate! What’s wrong with that?” Lafitte replied with a smirk. “I could use her to make you surrender as well.”
“Hahaha!”
Bajess stood atop a rooftop, holding Nami aloft and shouted down at the struggling Zoro, “Don’t you care about your companion’s life? If you do, then surrender quietly.”
With that, the grip on Nami tightened, making her body feel even more constricted.
"Luffy, Zoro, help me!"
From the moment the fight broke out in the tavern, Nami had managed to evade capture, but she hadn’t anticipated running into Blackbeard's crew outside.
The moment Bajess laid eyes on Nami, he recognized her instantly; after all, news of beautiful pirates spread quickly among the sea rogues, and even Bajess was aware of her reputation.
Now, Nami could only anxiously twist her body, signaling for her companions to come to her rescue.
"What’s the situation?"
"We always keep our promises. If you don’t back off, we will definitely tear your friends apart."
"I hope you mean what you say and don’t let Nami get hurt."
At this point, all three members of the Straw Hat Crew had been captured.
