I closed my eyes in despair.
But the expected pain never came.
I opened my eyes in confusion and saw that the enormous mutated zombie was standing right in front of me, completely still.
I was stunned.
What was going on?
Could it be a system bug?
“Wei Na!” Zhong Dali shouted excitedly. “You… you actually… you actually controlled it!”
I looked at Zhong Dali, completely bewildered.
Controlled?
What the hell was he talking about?
I didn’t even know what had happened!
Just then, the gigantic mutated zombie suddenly turned around and launched an attack on the other zombies.
I was dumbfounded.
What… what on earth was happening?
Could it be that I… I had awakened some incredible ability?
"Wei Na," a clear voice called from behind me, "are you okay?"
I turned around to see Mu Rong Shuang standing there, a hint of concern on her face.
"Mu Rong Shuang," I asked in confusion, "what's going on?"
Mu Rong Shuang shook her head. "I don't know either, but... I feel like... you're a bit different."
I touched my face, feeling nothing unusual.
Except for being handsome.
Just then, I suddenly felt a powerful surge of energy within me, filling me with immense excitement.
Could this be the legendary protagonist's halo?
"I... I think I've gotten stronger!" I exclaimed, exhilarated.
Wait, why does this power feel somewhat familiar?
It’s a bit like... the stomach pain before having diarrhea?
No way, is my superpower diarrhea?
"Wei Na," Mu Rong Shuang suddenly said, "watch out!"
Before I could react, a tremendous force knocked me flying.
I crashed heavily to the ground, feeling as if all my bones were about to shatter.
Struggling to get up, I saw a tall figure standing in front of me, exuding an overwhelming pressure.
“Qin Baye!” I gritted my teeth and said.
Damn it, how is this guy still haunting me?
Qin Baye, the ruler of the Iron Fortress, a ruthless man!
“Wei Na,” Qin Baye sneered, “I didn’t expect you to still be alive.”
“Hmph,” I scoffed, “If you’re not dead, how could I possibly be?”
Villains die from talking too much, you know?
“Wei Na,” Qin Baye continued, “You’re quite lucky to have awakened such a powerful ability.”
“But,” he shifted his tone, “your ability will ultimately belong to me!”
Is this guy after my incredible power?
“Dream on!” I shouted in anger and charged at Qin Baye once more.
I knew that today it was either him or me who would die!
Or… maybe he would die and I would drag him down with me?
"Pfft, what are you thinking!"
I, Wei Na, Zhong Dali, and this seemingly unreliable Mu Rong Shuang, somehow managed to escape from a sea of corpses and blood.
Although I had saved my life, looking at the scattered limbs and the stench of decay in the air, I couldn't feel happy at all.
When will this nightmare end?
"I say, Dali," I kicked Zhong Dali, who was still foolishly laughing beside me, "can't you be a bit more ambitious? You almost became a zombie's meal!"
Zhong Dali scratched his head and chuckled innocently, "Hehe, isn't it good that you were here, Wei Na? I knew you'd have a way out!"
I rolled my eyes; this silly boy really was carefree.
Speaking of which, could his optimistic spirit be developed further?
Perhaps we could start a "Doomsday Comedy Troupe"?
"This lady... uh..." I turned to Mu Rong Shuang and realized I still didn't know her name.
Although I had asked before, it was too chaotic back then for me to remember.
"Mu Rong Shuang," she said softly, her voice cold.
"Miss Mu Rong," I cupped my hands in gratitude, "thank you for your help this time. If it weren't for you, I would have probably turned into zombie dung by now."
Mu Rong Shuang simply nodded and didn't say much more.
"Cold and aloof, I like it!"
"What are your plans next?" I asked.
We couldn't just wander around in this ruin forever, could we?
"First, let's find a safe place to settle down," Mu Rong Shuang said, glancing around with a furrowed brow.
"Wei Na," Zhong Dali suddenly interjected, "I'm hungry."
I nearly slapped him for that.
What was he thinking, wanting to eat at a time like this?
However, his words did remind me that we really needed to find a place to regain our strength.
And… address some personal hygiene issues.
After all, rolling around in a pile of zombies had left me with a smell I could barely tolerate myself.
"Alright," I sighed helplessly, "let's find a place to settle down first, then we can talk."
The three of us navigated through the ruins, searching for somewhere to rest.
This wretched place didn't even have a public restroom.
"Stop!" Mu Rong Shuang suddenly raised her hand to signal us to halt.
"What’s wrong?" I asked warily.
Could it be that Qin Baye has caught up with us again?
"There’s some movement ahead," Mu Rong Shuang whispered.
I held my breath and listened carefully, and indeed, I heard faint footsteps.
"Is it a zombie?" Zhong Dali asked nervously.
His voice trembled slightly; it seemed the earlier experience had left him with quite a psychological scar.
"It doesn’t sound like one," Mu Rong Shuang shook her head. "It sounds more like... a person."
A person?
In this hellish place, encountering a human is even more terrifying than facing a zombie.
We cautiously approached and saw a ragged wanderer hiding behind a pile of debris, trembling uncontrollably.
"Please... don’t kill me!" The wanderer exclaimed upon seeing us, quickly begging for mercy.
"We're not bad people," I hurriedly replied. "You don’t need to be afraid."
Do we really look like bad people?
We’re just pitiful survivors clinging to life!
The wanderer slowly lifted his head, fear etched across his face.
"Who... who are you?" the wanderer asked warily.
"We are survivors," I replied. "What about you?"
"I... I'm also a survivor," the wanderer said. "My name is... Li Er Gou."
Li Er Gou?
That name... quite down-to-earth.
"Li Er Gou," I asked, "do you know of any safe places nearby?"
Li Er Gou nodded. "I know a place; it's... it's very safe."
A safe place?
Is there really a safe place in this world?
I expressed my skepticism.
"Take us there," I said.
Might as well give it a shot.
Under Li Er Gou's guidance, we arrived at an abandoned underground mall.
"This... is the safe place I mentioned," Li Er Gou said, pointing at the entrance of the underground mall.
An underground mall?
How safe could this place really be?
We followed Li Er Gou into the underground mall, and a wave of damp air hit us.
"Is it really safe here?" Zhong Dali asked skeptically.
"Safe," Li Er Gou replied confidently. "There are many survivors here."
Many survivors?
That was good news.
Strength in numbers, after all.
Sure enough, we saw several survivors in the underground mall, gathered in small groups—some resting, others chatting.
It seemed that this truly was a refuge.
"This... is our new home," I said.
Although this new home didn't look like much, it was certainly better than sleeping on the streets.
