Xie Yutong looked at me, her eyes filled with complex emotions. "Weina, things are much more complicated than you think..."
As soon as she finished speaking, a strange, eerie howl suddenly echoed from nearby, sharp and grating like metal scraping against metal.
"Wow! What was that sound?" Zhong Dali exclaimed in terror, jumping up from the ground, completely forgetting that he had just been grazed by a bullet.
I signaled for everyone to be quiet and cautiously peeked out to assess the situation. In the moonlight, a massive figure was slowly moving, each step accompanied by the sound of metal clashing.
"Is that... a zombie?" I squinted, unable to believe what I was seeing.
It was undoubtedly the most terrifying zombie I had ever encountered. It stood more than twice the height of an ordinary zombie, its body covered in armor-like bony plates. The skin that should have been decaying was enveloped in a metallic substance, glinting coldly under the moonlight. The most frightening part was its eyes—not the usual milky white of a zombie, but a pair of glowing red orbs, like two small searchlights scanning the darkness for prey.
"Wow! That zombie is wearing armor? That's not fair!" Zhong Dali whispered dramatically.
Xiao Yu smacked him on the arm. "Shut up! Do you want to attract it over here?"
I turned to Xie Yutong and noticed her face was even paler than before, her eyes filled with fear.
"You know what that is, don't you?" I asked her quietly.
Xie Yutong nodded slowly, struggling to find her voice. "Armored mutated zombie... the latest product of Qin Baye's experiments. They are nearly indestructible and possess basic intelligence and enhanced sensory abilities."
"Wow! We're doomed!" Zhong Dali said in despair.
Xiao Yu rolled her eyes at him. "Can you say something constructive?"
"Shh—" I gestured for everyone to be quiet. "It seems to be searching for something."
The armored zombie came to a halt, its head slowly turning from side to side as if sniffing the air. Suddenly, it jerked its head in our direction, its red eyes fixated on the shipping container where we were hiding.
"Oh no, it found us!" I whispered.
"Wow! I didn't even move!" Zhong Dali exclaimed in panic.
Xie Yutong weakly said, "They can sense human body heat and breath from over fifty meters away."
"What do we do now?" Xiaoyu asked nervously.
I quickly brainstormed a strategy while feeling a strange desire rising within me—a sensation I experienced every time I faced a powerful zombie, an intense urge to devour it and gain its abilities.
"We split up and draw it away," I whispered. "I'll find a way to deal with it."
"No way!" Xie Yutong grabbed my wrist. "That thing is too dangerous! You can't take it on alone!"
"Wow! Weina, she's right!" Zhong Dali said with a worried expression. "That thing looks like it could have you for breakfast!"
I took a deep breath. "I have a plan."
Just as we were arguing, a loud crash interrupted us—the armored zombie slammed into the container, causing the entire structure to shake.
"Run!" I shouted, pulling Xie Yutong as we dashed to the side.
Xiaoyu and Zhong Dali ran in the opposite direction, trying to divert the zombie's attention. But unexpectedly, the armored zombie completely ignored them and charged straight at me and Xie Yutong.
"Why is it chasing us?" I asked as we ran.
"Maybe it's the serum... They are designed to track targets carrying specific substances!" Xie Yutong gritted her teeth and said.
We were sprinting madly through the container area, but Xie Yutong's injuries were making it increasingly difficult for her. I could feel her pace slowing down, her breathing growing heavier.
"Hang in there!" I encouraged her.
"Wei Na..." Xie Yutong suddenly stopped, "You should go on without me... I'm holding you back..."
"Don't say that!" I scooped her up and continued running forward.
The footsteps of the armored zombie grew closer; it was much faster than an ordinary zombie, almost as agile as a human.
We turned a corner around a container, only to find ourselves at a dead end—a high wall blocked our path.
"Damn it!" I turned to retreat, only to see the armored zombie had already blocked our only escape route.
I set Xie Yutong down and positioned myself in front of her. "Is there any way to kill this thing?"
Xie Yutong weakly shook her head. "Its armor is nearly indestructible... The only way is to destroy the control core at the back of its neck... but that's where the armor is thickest..."
The armored zombie slowly advanced toward us, its red eyes gleaming with a bloodthirsty light.
Just at that critical moment, a familiar shout rang out from the side:
"Wow! Big guy! Look over here!"
Zhong Dali appeared out of nowhere, swinging a metal rod and striking the armored zombie hard on its back.
The armored zombie was enraged, abruptly turning to face the intruder that disturbed it.
“Zhong Dali! Run!” I shouted.
But Zhong Dali seemed unusually excited. “Wow! It’s pretty sturdy!”
The armored zombie let out a roar and lunged at Zhong Dali.
“Watch out!” I yelled, seeing the big guy about to be in trouble.
To my surprise, Zhong Dali nimbly dodged aside and struck the zombie on the head with his club. “Wow! Too slow!”
At the same time, Xiao Yu appeared from the other side, holding a dagger and precisely aiming for the joints of the armored zombie—its weak points that she had observed.
“Wei Na! Now!” Xiao Yu shouted.
I understood her meaning—this was my best chance to approach the armored zombie.
A strong desire burned within me; I knew it was my ability calling out. If I could devour this powerful armored zombie, my strength would greatly increase.
“Take care of Xie Yutong! ” I called to Xiao Yu, then charged toward the armored zombie.
“Wei Na! No!” Xie Yutong weakly shouted, but I couldn’t afford to worry about that now.
The armored zombie noticed my approach, abandoning Zhong Dali to lunge at me instead. Its speed was astonishing, and I barely managed to dodge in time.
“Wow! Be careful, Wei Na!” Zhong Dali shouted nervously from the side.
I skillfully dodged the zombie's attacks, searching for an opportunity to strike at the back of its neck.
“Zhong Dali! Distract it!” I shouted.
“Wow! Leave it to me!” Zhong Dali swung his weapon, landing a hit on the zombie's leg and successfully drawing its attention.
In that split second when the armored zombie turned around, I leaped up, trying to climb onto its back. But I underestimated its reaction speed—it suddenly reached out and grabbed my leg, slamming me hard onto the ground.
“Ugh!” A sharp pain shot through my body, and I felt as if several ribs might have broken.
“Wei Na!” Xiao Yu and Zhong Dali exclaimed in unison.
The armored zombie loomed over me, its red eyes staring down at me, a twisted expression that could almost be called a "smile" curling at its lips—this was incredibly eerie; ordinary zombies never displayed such complex facial expressions.
“It... it's smiling?” I watched in disbelief.
Just as the armored zombie prepared to deliver a fatal blow, Xiao Yu suddenly charged in, plunging her dagger precisely into its eye.
The zombie let out a piercing wail, violently shaking its head in an attempt to throw Xiao Yu off.
“Wei Na! Run!” Xiao Yu shouted while dodging.
But I didn’t run. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—it was in its most vulnerable state.
Gritting my teeth against the pain, I got back on my feet and dashed behind the zombie, grabbing hold of its head with all my strength to secure it in place.
“Grab its legs!” I yelled at Zhong Dali.
"Wow! I understand!" Zhong Dali immediately lunged forward, tightly gripping the legs of the armored zombie.
The armored zombie was restricted in its movements, struggling wildly. I knew this was the only chance—either I would successfully consume it or be torn to shreds by it.
I opened my mouth and bit down hard at the seam of its armor on the back of its neck.
An indescribable surge of energy flooded into my body instantly, feeling as if I had downed an entire bottle of strong liquor or been struck by lightning—pain and power coursed through every nerve.
The zombie's struggles intensified; its sounds transformed from roars into a bizarre scream that was a mix between mechanical and human.
"Hold it tight!" I shouted to Zhong Dali, biting down harder on the zombie's neck.
I could feel a strange substance being drawn from the zombie's body into mine. My skin began to heat up, and my muscles ached as if something was altering my physical structure.
As I continued to absorb the energy, the armored zombie's struggles gradually weakened. Its red eyes started to dim, and its body became rigid.
"It's... it's getting weaker!" Xiaoyu exclaimed in surprise.
"Wow! Wei Na, what are you doing?" Zhong Dali stared in disbelief at the scene.
I didn’t respond, as I was fully focused on the consumption process. With energy continuously flowing in, I felt my body undergoing marvelous changes—my skin grew tougher, my muscles firmer, and even my bones seemed to be quietly reorganizing.
Finally, the armored zombie completely ceased its struggle; its eyes lost their light, and its massive body collapsed with a thud.
I released my grip and staggered back a few steps, feeling as if my entire body was on fire.
"Wei Na! Are you okay?" Xiaoyu asked with concern.
"Wow! What just happened?" Zhong Dali asked in surprise. "Were you... eating it?"
I looked down at my hands, astonished to find a thin, metallic layer covering my skin, resembling the skin of an armored zombie.
"I... I gained its ability," I murmured, feeling the new power surging within me.
"Oh my God..." Xiaoyu stared at me in disbelief. "You can really absorb the abilities of zombies..."
"Wow! That's so cool!" Zhong Dali exclaimed, excitedly patting my shoulder. "Are you a superhero now?"
I shook my head. "No, it's just... an evolution."
I walked back to Xie Yutong and found her looking at me with a complex expression.
"Did you see that?" I asked.
Xie Yutong weakly nodded. "So this is your secret ability... Soul Devouring Immunity Evolution. You can really devour zombies and gain their powers."
"Yes," I helped her sit up. "You knew all along, didn't you?"
Xie Yutong didn't answer directly. "Wei Na, do you understand what this ability means?"
"It means I can better protect everyone," I replied.
Xie Yutong gave a bitter smile. "No, it means Qin Baye will stop at nothing to capture you. You are the key to his experiments—a human capable of spontaneously absorbing and adapting to viral mutations."
"So that's your goal?" Xiaoyu asked coldly. "You came here to capture him?"
"No!" Xie Yutong exclaimed excitedly, but then winced in pain from her wound. "I came to warn him, to protect him."
"Wow! This is so complicated!" Zhong Dali scratched his head. "So is she a good person or a bad person?"
I carefully observed Xie Yutong's expression, trying to discern the truth. But in this apocalyptic world, who could fully trust anyone?
At that moment, I felt a strange sensation spreading from my chest. I looked down and noticed that the metallic substance on my skin was slowly expanding, covering more area.
"What’s happening?" I asked in confusion.
Xie Yutong's expression turned worried. "This is a characteristic of armored zombies—they're armor will continue to grow until it covers the entire body."
"Wow! Will Wei Na turn into a zombie?" Zhong Dali asked in terror.
"No," Xie Yutong shook her head. "His immune system is different. He won't turn into a zombie, but he will gain the characteristics of the armor."
I tried to control the spread, and to my surprise, it actually stopped. Not only that, I found I could even make the already formed armor contract or expand.
"This is amazing..." I looked at my arm as the metallic substance changed with my thoughts.
"You've already started to master it," Xie Yutong said in astonishment. "This is happening much faster than I expected."
"Wow! Wei Na, can you become Iron Man?" Zhong Dali asked excitedly.
Xiao Yu rolled her eyes. "This isn't the time for jokes." She turned to me. "This ability is indeed powerful, but it's also very dangerous. If Qin Baye finds out..."
"He will stop at nothing to capture me," I finished her sentence. "I know."
Xie Yutong suddenly grabbed my hand. "Wei Na, now you understand why I needed to find you, right? You are the only one who can stand against Qin Baye. Only you can absorb and control these mutated abilities without being controlled by them."
I stared into her eyes. "But you still haven't told me the whole truth. What exactly is the Green Tea Alliance? What is your relationship with Qin Baye?"
Xie Yutong sighed. "The Green Tea Alliance was originally established as a secret organization to research and control the Soul-Eating Virus. I was one of the core researchers." She paused for a moment. "And Qin Baye... he used to be our leader."
The news exploded in my mind like a bomb.
"Wow! Plot twist!" Zhong Dali exclaimed dramatically.
Xiao Yu frowned. "So you were all in cahoots?"
"Used to be," Xie Yutong corrected. "But Qin Baye betrayed the original purpose of the Alliance. He is no longer satisfied with just controlling the virus; he wants to use it to create an undead army and dominate the world."
"That sounds like a cliché sci-fi movie plot," I said, half skeptical.
Xie Yutong forced a smile. "But that's reality. Qin Baye has already successfully created the armored zombies you just faced; this is only the beginning. More terrifying mutations are in development, and if he succeeds..."
"No one will be able to stop him," I finished her sentence.
"Except for you," Xie Yutong said seriously, looking at me. "Your ability is our only hope, Wei Na. You can absorb and control these mutations, which means you can fight against Qin Baye's army."
I fell into deep thought. If what Xie Yutong said was true, then my ability was indeed crucial. But what if this was a trap?
"Wow! Wei Na is going to save the world!" Zhong Dali said excitedly.
Xiao Yu remained cautious. "How do we know what you're saying is true?"
Xie Yutong smiled weakly, "Isn't the armored zombie you saw enough proof? That's just the preliminary result of Qin Baye's experiments. He is developing even more terrifying variants."
I turned to Xiaoyu and Zhong Dali, "What do you think?"
"Wow! I think she makes a lot of sense!" Zhong Dali exclaimed immediately. "And now you have superpowers, Wei Na! We can defeat the bad guys together!"
Xiaoyu was more cautious. "I'm not sure. But if what she says is true, then this Qin Baye is indeed a huge threat. And your abilities..." She glanced at me, "are definitely special."
I looked down at my hands; the metallic substance was completely under my control, able to manifest or hide at will. This power filled me with both excitement and fear.
"Alright," I finally decided, "let's protect Xie Yutong first and hear what other information she has. Then we can decide what to do next."
"Wow! That's the Wei Na I know!" Zhong Dali said excitedly. "Always so full of justice!"
I gave him a wry smile, thinking: Justice? I just want to survive.
Xie Yutong nodded gratefully, "Thank you, Wei Na. I promise I'll tell you everything I know."
I helped her to her feet. "We need to get out of here quickly. The armored zombies have been drained, but who knows if there are others nearby?"
"Wow! You're right!" Zhong Dali quickly stepped forward and offered to carry Xie Yutong on his back. "I'll carry her!"
We cautiously left the container area and headed toward the east side of the city. Along the way, I kept trying to control my newly acquired abilities and discovered that I could not only form armor to protect myself but also enhance my strength and speed.
"This is amazing," I whispered, watching the flowing metallic substance on my arm.
"Your adaptability is remarkable," Xie Yutong said from Zhong Dali's back. "That's one of the reasons why Qin Baye wants you."
"So, you're saying that Qin Baye knows about my existence?" I pondered.
Xie Yutong nodded. "Yes, he has been monitoring all potential immune individuals. Your recent victories against the special zombies have already caught his attention."
"Wow! Wei Na, you're famous now!" Zhong Dali exclaimed excitedly.
Xiao Yu frowned. "That's not necessarily a good thing."
We continued on our way, and Xie Yutong shared more information about Qin Baye and the Green Tea Alliance. According to her, Qin Baye was once an outstanding scientist focused on virus research. When the Soul Devouring virus broke out, he formed the Green Tea Alliance with the aim of studying and controlling the virus. However, as his research progressed, he discovered the virus's potential—it could transform humans in specific ways, creating super soldiers.
"Since then, his goals have changed," Xie Yutong said. "He no longer wants to control the virus; he wants to exploit it."
"But why call it the 'Green Tea Alliance'?" I asked curiously. "That name doesn't sound scientific at all."
Xie Yutong gave a wry smile. "That's... a personal reason."
Just as I was about to press for more details, I suddenly felt a sharp pain radiating from my chest. I stopped in my tracks and noticed that a metallic substance was spreading across my skin; this time, I couldn't control it.
"What’s happening?" I asked in panic.
Xie Yutong's expression changed. "It's a rejection reaction! Your body is resisting the mutation!"
"Wow! Is this serious?" Zhong Dali asked with concern.
"Very serious," Xie Yutong replied urgently. "If it can't be controlled, the metallic substance will cover your entire body, and eventually, you'll end up like that armored zombie!"
"Is there any way to stop it?" Xiao Yu asked nervously.
Xie Yutong pondered for a moment, "The potion! The blue potion can temporarily suppress the mutation!"
"But we've used up the last one!" I gritted my teeth, feeling the metallic substance spreading to my chest.
"Wow! We need to find a way to get more potions!" Zhong Dali said anxiously.
Xie Yutong suddenly pointed into the distance, "Over there! Look at that building!"
I followed her finger and saw a relatively intact structure in the distance, marked with a medical sign.
"That's a pharmacy!" Xiaoyu immediately realized, "There might be medicine inside!"
"Wow! What are we waiting for? Let's go!" Zhong Dali said as he hoisted Xie Yutong onto his back and dashed toward the pharmacy.
Xiaoyu and I followed closely behind, but each step I took sent waves of pain through me as the metallic substance continued to spread.
"Hang in there, Wei Na!" Xiaoyu encouraged me, "We're almost there!"
As we approached the pharmacy, I suddenly noticed something was off about our surroundings—there were shell casings and blood scattered across the ground, indicating that a fierce battle had taken place here not long ago.
"Everyone be careful," I whispered as a warning, "This place might be dangerous."
"Wow! Is there trouble again?" Zhong Dali asked nervously.
We cautiously approached the pharmacy, peering through the shattered glass windows to see the chaos inside.
"You all wait outside," I said through gritted teeth, "I'll go in and take a look."
"No way!" Xiaoyu blocked my path. "It's too dangerous for you to go in like this! I'm coming with you."
"Wow! Then I'll keep watch outside with Xie Yutong!" Zhong Dali said.
I nodded and cautiously entered the pharmacy with Xiaoyu. Inside, it was clear that a fierce battle had taken place—counters were smashed, medicines were scattered everywhere, and there were bullet holes and bloodstains on the walls.
"You look for the potions, and I'll keep watch," Xiaoyu whispered.
I quickly rummaged through the disordered medicines, hoping to find something similar to the blue potion. Just then, I spotted a locked drawer labeled "Hazardous Materials."
"Over here!" I signaled Xiaoyu to come over. "Help me pry open this drawer!"
Using her dagger, Xiaoyu managed to open the drawer, and sure enough, there were several vials of blue potion inside!
"Great!" I eagerly picked one up and injected it into my arm.
Almost immediately, I felt a cool sensation spreading from the injection site; the metallic substance's spread halted and began to slowly recede.
"It's working!" I sighed in relief.
Xiaoyu smiled as well. "That's wonderful. Let's take a few more just in case."
We gathered all the remaining potions and were about to leave when we suddenly heard Zhong Dali's alarmed shout from outside:
"Whoa! Don't come over! Don't come over!"
Xiaoyu and I rushed out of the pharmacy to witness a terrifying scene—five armored zombies were slowly approaching from a distance, while Zhong Dali was holding Xie Yutong, trying to keep as far away from them as possible.
"Damn it!" I muttered under my breath, "How did they find us?"
Xie Yutong weakly said, "They can track the infected... that is, you, Wei Na. You've absorbed the energy of the armored zombies, and to them, it's like a beacon."
I glanced at my arm; although the metallic substance had receded significantly, it was still present.
"We need to leave here immediately!" Xiao Yu urged anxiously.
"Wow! There are too many of them! We can't escape!" Zhong Dali said in despair.
I took a deep breath and made my decision: "You all take Xie Yutong and go ahead. I'll draw their attention."
