"Alright, Mr. Jiang, I'll pick you up tomorrow. I have some matters to attend to this afternoon, so I'll head back now." Yue Hui stood up.
After seeing Yue Hui off, Jiang Chen's grandmother suggested taking a walk by West Lake, and the whole family set off on foot towards the lake.
It wasn't until the sun began to set that Jiang Chen's grandmother led everyone to a private dining room at a restaurant by West Lake. Zhou Rongli's older brother, second brother, and third brother were already there, along with the elder Zhou Yiquan.
This time, the matriarch took the initiative; she hoped to ease family tensions through tonight's gathering. As she entered the room with Jiang Chen's family, Zhou Rongli's brothers merely glanced at them without offering any greetings. Zhou Rongli, supporting the elderly lady, certainly didn't initiate any conversation either.
However, Zhou Baojia felt extremely awkward. He had long harbored guilt; it was because of him that Zhou Rongli's relationship with her family had soured. He thought this was a perfect opportunity to mend the cold war since the matriarch was present.
"Ahem, you all arrived quite early," Zhou Baojia said.
But no one acknowledged him.
"Dad, you weren't feeling well at noon. Are you feeling better now?" Seeing no one respond to him, Zhou Baojia awkwardly turned to the elder.
Zhou Yiquan leaned on his cane, sitting upright and casting a faint glance at Zhou Baojia.
"I'm perfectly fine," he finally replied with a hint of indifference.
Hearing that the elder did not respond with cold words this time brought a quiet sigh of relief to Zhou Baojia.
After speaking, Zhou Yiquan turned his gaze toward Zhou Rongli. The father-daughter relationship between them had reached an icy point; upon meeting her father's gaze, Zhou Rongli remained cold and silent.
" Zhou Rong Li..." the matriarch called softly, signaling her.
Zhou Rongli frowned slightly. Although she resisted in her heart, she ultimately spoke up. "Dad!"
"Hmph!" Zhou Yiquan let out a light snort, seemingly displeased with Zhou Rongli's attitude; however, his reaction was better than it had been three years ago.
"Old man, did you not hear Zhou Rong Li calling you? Is this how you act as a father? Are you planning to not speak to her for the rest of your life?" the matriarch said sternly.
"I'm not deaf; of course I heard her," Zhou Yiquan replied coolly.
" Zhou Rong Li, don't take it personally; he just can't let go of his pride and suffers for it. Even in front of his daughter, he still puts on airs as if he were still in office after all these years," the matriarch chuckled.
Zhou Rongli smiled but said nothing.
Jiang Chen watched from the side, taking in the complexities of human relationships. Dealing with family matters was always troublesome. Naturally, Jiang Chen centered his thoughts around the wishes of his Godparents, so he did not intend to intervene. Whether his godmother chose to fight or make peace, Jiang Chen would support her decision.
“ Zhou Pingyong, Zhou Pingming, Zhou PingNan, as your elder brother, don’t you have any dignity at all?” the old lady said with a serious tone for the first time.
“ Zhou Pingyong, you are the eldest son and now the head of the family. This position was given to you by Zhou Rong Li; don’t you think you should thank your sister more?” Seeing her three sons silent, the old lady turned her gaze to her eldest son, Zhou Pingyong.
Zhou Pingyong's expression was dark, his eyes filled with complexity.
Three years ago, during the old lady's birthday celebration, Zhou Rongli returned for the first time. Zhou Pingyong had spoken coldly to his sister, and the old lady had actually demanded that he kneel and apologize to her. Fortunately, their father intervened to protect his eldest son, preventing Zhou Pingyong from embarrassing himself.
