The shadows of the trees danced in the back mountain, the night wind howled, and an unsettling chill permeated the air. Lin Xiaoxiao quickened her pace, almost breaking into a run. Su Mu and the security guards followed closely behind, not daring to let their guard down for a moment.
As they passed through a dense grove, an open space appeared before them. In the center of this clearing stood an ancient locust tree, its thick trunk and lush branches creating an eerie silhouette against the night sky. Lin Xiaoxiao walked straight toward the tree, reaching out as if to touch its bark.
"Be careful!" Su Mu felt a shiver run down his spine as he sensed a powerful malevolent energy emanating from the locust tree. He quickly took out a calming talisman given to him by his master, reciting an incantation as he pressed the talisman to Lin Xiaoxiao's forehead.
Lin Xiaoxiao's body jolted, her eyes regaining a hint of clarity. She looked around in confusion and asked, "Where am I? How did I get here?"
Seeing that the talisman was working, Su Mu breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Xiao Xiao, you were sleepwalking just now."
Lin Xiaoxiao still seemed not fully awake, her eyes filled with doubt and fear. Just then, a gust of cold wind swept through, causing the branches and leaves of the locust tree to shake violently, producing a chilling rustling sound. Su Mu felt a powerful force surging from the tree, as if it were about to engulf Lin Xiaoxiao.
"This is bad! There's something wrong with this locust tree!" Su Mu realized the urgency of the situation and shouted to the security guards, "Protect Xiao Xiao!"
As soon as he finished speaking, a bone-chilling cracking sound echoed through the air! Everyone turned in terror to see that the thick trunk of the ancient locust tree was suddenly splitting apart without warning, as if being torn apart by an invisible force.
Accompanied by the cracking of the trunk, a shadow as dark as ink slowly drifted out from the fissure like a ghost. At first, it appeared as a vague silhouette, but as it rose higher, it gradually took on substance. When it fully revealed itself, they saw that it was a woman clad in a long robe as white as snow, with long hair cascading down her shoulders.
Her face was as pale as paper, devoid of any color; her eyes were hollow and lifeless, resembling two deep black holes that instilled fear in those who gazed upon them. Her lips bore an eerie dark hue that starkly contrasted with her ghostly complexion, adding to her terrifying presence.
Moreover, an icy aura continuously emanated from her body like a bone-chilling winter wind, instantly enveloping the entire clearing and causing everyone present to shiver uncontrollably.
"Vengeance... there is vengeance..." The woman suddenly opened her mouth and let out an extremely mournful wail. The sound was sharp and piercing, as if it could penetrate one's soul, echoing endlessly across the open space. Those who heard this sorrowful cry felt their spines chill and their scalps tingle.
Standing nearby, Su Mu's heart tightened at this sight. Drawing on years of experience and keen intuition, he immediately recognized that this mysterious white-clad woman was the true culprit behind Lin Xiaoxiao's nightly sleepwalking episodes!
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he asked in a low and steady voice, "What vengeful spirit are you? Why do you stir up trouble here and harm others?"
The female ghost ignored Su Mu's question and directed her vengeful gaze toward Lin Xiaoxiao, slowly extending her pale arm toward her.
"Bold demon! Do not harm her!" Su Mu shouted fiercely. He once again took out another talisman from his pocket and began chanting incantations. The talisman ignited into flames, transforming into a beam of golden light that shot straight toward the female ghost.
The female ghost let out a piercing scream, swiftly retreating to evade the attack of the golden light. She seemed to be extremely wary of the talisman in Su Mu's hand, not daring to approach easily.
"It seems that ordinary talismans have little effect on her," Su Mu thought to himself. He knew that he needed to employ a more powerful technique to subdue this vengeful spirit. Taking a deep breath, he focused his mind, quickly forming hand seals and reciting incantations.
As he chanted, a golden radiance emanated from Su Mu, growing increasingly brilliant. The talisman in his hand also radiated a powerful surge of spiritual energy, causing the surrounding air to feel as if it had solidified.
The female ghost sensed the immense power radiating from Su Mu and a flicker of fear crossed her eyes. She realized she was no match for him and attempted to flee, only to find herself bound by an invisible force, unable to move.
Su Mu tightly gripped the talisman that shimmered with dazzling light; at that moment, it resembled a brilliant little sun, illuminating the surrounding area as bright as day.
With a determined gaze, Su Mu's arm surged with strength as he forcefully hurled the talisman into the air. The talisman seemed alive, spinning and soaring through the air while accompanied by deafening roars that echoed through the sky.
Then, an astonishing scene unfolded: the originally small talisman rapidly expanded in mid-air, ultimately transforming into a massive golden beam of light several meters in diameter, crashing down towards the female ghost with tremendous force!
Enveloped by the golden beam, the female ghost emitted a chilling scream and howled in agony. She twisted her body frantically, trying to break free from the powerful light's grip.
At the same time, thick black mist began to surge from her body, resembling menacing snakes that lunged at the golden beam in an attempt to resist its terrifying purifying power.
Unfortunately for her, this golden light was infused with the purest righteous energy in existence, inherently suppressing all malevolent entities. Thus, despite her desperate struggle, her resistance grew weaker; the black mist dissipated rapidly upon contact with the golden light, like snow melting under a blazing sun.
Watching as the female ghost's form gradually became ethereal and blurred within the golden light, Su Mu's expression turned serious as he solemnly asked, "Do you have any unfulfilled wishes? If so, speak them now."
The ghost's horrifying howls receded like a tide until they finally vanished into the stillness of the night. Her once vengeful and resentful eyes began to dim; that intense hatred seemed to dissipate with time. However, just as her resentment was about to fade completely, a hint of sorrow crept onto her face—a silent lament for her tragic fate.
She slightly parted her lips and spoke in an extremely weak and trembling voice about her past: "I... my name is Tao Hong. I was just an ordinary student at this school... Who would have thought I would meet such a tragic end, cruelly murdered beneath this ancient locust tree... To this day, my remains are still buried beneath this tree, forgotten by all..."
Upon hearing this, Su Mu felt a jolt in his heart as an indescribable mix of fear and pity surged within him. He had initially thought this female ghost was merely a malevolent spirit seeking vengeance; however, hearing her own words revealed that she too was a victim of injustice—unable to reincarnate due to her tragic death here and condemned to wander this campus in perpetual suffering.
With a heavy heart, Su Mu slowly turned his gaze towards the massive roots of the locust tree. In the dim moonlight, he indeed spotted some scattered bones on the ground that glimmered with a ghastly white glow in the darkness—eerily haunting. Perhaps these bones were the only remnants left of that poor girl who once walked this earth?
Looking at the shocking white bones, Su Mu took a deep breath and solemnly promised the female ghost, "Rest assured, Miss Tao Hong. I will do everything in my power to find the true culprit and clear your name! Furthermore, I will ensure that your remains are properly collected and buried in a place of good fortune, allowing you to escape this suffering and re-enter the cycle of reincarnation as a human."
Upon hearing Su Mu's promise, a hint of gratitude appeared on the female ghost's face. Her figure gradually faded, ultimately transforming into specks of starlight that dispersed into the night sky. The golden light also vanished, and the area returned to tranquility.
Su Mu, with a serious expression, directed the security personnel to carefully gather Tao Hong's scattered bones and place them into black bags. He understood the gravity of the situation and knew he needed to report it to the police immediately and contact relevant departments for a thorough investigation.
After handling these matters, Su Mu slowly turned around, his gaze landing on Lin Xiaoxiao beside him. At this moment, Lin Xiaoxiao was completely awake, but her once rosy face now appeared extremely pale, as if all color had been drained from it. Clearly, this terrifying experience had left her greatly shaken.
"Xiao Xiao, don't be afraid. You are safe now; nothing will happen anymore," Su Mu gently reassured her while lightly patting Lin Xiaoxiao's shoulder. "And I promise that starting today, you will never sleepwalk again." Hearing Su Mu's warm yet firm words, Lin Xiaoxiao lifted her head, her beautiful eyes gazing intently at the man who had appeared like a hero to save her.
In that moment, her eyes were filled with admiration and gratitude, tears uncontrollably welling up in her eyes. She knew very well that if it weren't for Su Mu's timely intervention, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Time swiftly passed to the next morning. The sun shone through thin clouds, casting its rays upon the earth. After receiving important leads from Su Mu, the police quickly sprang into action.
With their keen insight and efficient investigative methods, they soon managed to identify the suspect and ultimately apprehended him. As the true culprit was captured, the entire truth of the case came to light. It turned out to be a tragedy born from love turned to hate.
Upon learning all this, people couldn't help but sigh in lamentation. Meanwhile, Tao Hong's wronged soul could finally find peace.
At the same time, Su Mu did not forget his promise to Tao Hong. He personally selected a beautiful and serene burial site and ensured that Tao Hong's remains were properly laid to rest there.
Before the gravestone, Su Mu silently offered a bouquet of pure white flowers and prayed quietly: May the deceased rest in peace and may the living remain strong.
