Amidst the mist-shrouded peaks, there lay an ancient courtyard. This was the abode of the Heavenly Mechanism Sect, and also the place where Su Mu Xin would cultivate his skills.
Daoist Xuanji led Su Mu into a room filled with books and medicinal herbs. "Mu Er, this is your room, and it will be your place of learning in the future."
Su Mu looked around, his eyes brimming with curiosity and anticipation. He picked up an ancient text and began to flip through its pages, discovering many medical techniques and divination methods he had never encountered before.
"Master, what are these..." Su Mu asked.
"These are the legacies of the Heavenly Mechanism Sect, including medical arts, divination techniques, Taoist practices, and more," Daoist Xuanji replied as he stroked his beard. "Your grandfather only learned a portion of the 'Heavenly Mechanism Medical Canon,' but I will impart to you all its essence."
In the days that followed, Su Mu embarked on a rigorous training regimen. Daoist Xuanji not only taught him the more profound medical arts and divination techniques from the 'Heavenly Mechanism Medical Canon,' but also explained Taoist theories such as Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, and the Eight Trigrams, as well as how to combine medical arts with divination for greater efficacy.
"Medical arts heal and save lives, while divination predicts fortunes and misfortunes. Though they seem independent, they are actually interconnected," Daoist Xuanji said. "Medical arts can regulate the body, while divination can foresee illnesses; when combined, they can yield remarkable results."
Su Mu nodded in partial understanding. Daoist Xuanji continued, "For instance, if a person's Five Elements are imbalanced, leading to excessive liver fire, they may easily fall ill. We can use divination to predict this in advance and apply appropriate remedies to prevent it."
Daoist Xuanji also taught Su Mu unique techniques, such as how to observe a patient's facial features and complexion to diagnose ailments; how to utilize divination symbols to find the best treatment plan; and how to use talismans and elixirs to enhance healing effects.
Under his master's careful guidance, Su Mu's skills in both medical arts and divination advanced rapidly. He began to experiment with integrating these disciplines into practical applications.
A few days later, a villager with a sallow complexion and unsteady steps was helped into the Heavenly Mechanism Sect by others. He coughed incessantly, his breath weak and his eyes filled with fear and despair.
"Please, Immortal Master, save me!" the villager pleaded weakly.
The villagers supporting him explained anxiously, "My brother has fallen ill with a strange disease. We've seen many doctors, but nothing has worked. We heard that the Heavenly Mechanism Sect can cure all ailments, so we brought him here to try our luck."
Daoist Xuanji stepped forward to examine the patient, his brow furrowed. "This illness is unusual; it seems he has been afflicted by an evil spirit."
Su Mu observed the villager's symptoms closely: his complexion was waxy yellow, his eyes lacked vitality, his forehead was darkened, his lips were purple, and his pulse was erratic—sometimes rapid, sometimes slow. It indeed resembled a condition of imbalance between yin and yang.
"Master, let me give it a try," Su Mu said.
Daoist Xuanji nodded. "Very well, let’s see what you can do."
Su Mu first used a turtle shell for divination. The result indicated: Kan represents water, Li represents fire; water and fire are not in harmony, leading to an imbalance of yin and yang. This aligned with his previous assessment.
He took out brush and ink, preparing paper and inkstone. On the yellow paper, he drew a talisman to dispel evil spirits. After burning the talisman, he mixed the ashes into water for the villager to drink.
Next, based on the villager's condition, he prepared a herbal remedy. This remedy contained both warming herbs to replenish yang energy and cooling herbs to nourish yin and clear heat, aiming to harmonize yin and yang while expelling evil spirits.
After the villager consumed the talisman water and herbal remedy, his complexion gradually regained some color, and his breathing became steadier.
Su Mu then used silver needles to perform acupuncture on several points of his body, further unblocking the meridians and balancing yin and yang.
An hour later, the villager finally opened his eyes, a glimmer of vitality returning to them. "I... I feel much better..."
Seeing this, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
“Thank you so much, Immortal Master, for saving our lives!” The villager and his companion were overwhelmed with gratitude, bowing repeatedly.
Su Mu helped them to their feet and said, “There’s no need for such formalities. The evil spirit has been eliminated; you just need to take some herbal medicine for a few more days to fully recover.”
Daoist Xuanji looked at Su Mu with admiration in his eyes. “Mu Er, you did exceptionally well. You combined your medical skills and divination techniques perfectly; you truly are my disciple.”
Su Mu smiled humbly, aware that he still had much to learn. This success only strengthened his resolve to continue his studies in both medicine and divination.
