The stifling air seemed to solidify, and the cicadas outside shrieked, tugging at Su Mu's nerves like a saw. The atmosphere in the old house was so oppressive that it was hard to breathe, filled with dust and a musty smell. Su Mu irritably tore off his mask, his T-shirt soaked with sweat.
"This damn place!" he muttered under his breath as he continued rummaging through the old belongings left by his grandfather.
Su Mu was a top student at the medical university, and he had originally planned to intern at a hospital during the summer. However, an unexpected phone call had summoned him back to his hometown. After his grandfather's passing, the old house needed renovations, and he had been tasked with clearing out the old items.
Su Mu felt little connection to his family's traditional Chinese medicine background; he believed more in the scientific rigor of modern medicine. The ancient texts and prescriptions left behind by his grandfather seemed to him nothing more than piles of useless paper, taking up space without any real value.
Bored, he kicked aside a dusty wooden box, which emitted a dull thud as something rolled out from within. He bent down to pick it up and discovered an ancient thread-bound book.
The cover was worn and fragile, as if it might fall apart at any moment. It bore three characters written in traditional Chinese: "Heavenly Secrets Medical Manual." Su Mu scoffed and flipped through a few pages, finding them densely packed with various prescriptions and strange symbols, along with some obscure incantations.
"This is just too mystical," he mumbled, preparing to toss the book back into the box when something on one of the pages caught his eye.
That page detailed a method called "Wang Qi Diagnosis," claiming one could assess health conditions by observing the human energy field. Although Su Mu studied modern medicine, he had heard snippets of his grandfather's "mystical" traditional practices since childhood, and curiosity suddenly piqued within him.
He closed the book and inexplicably stuffed it into his backpack.
Once home, Su Mu tossed the "Heavenly Secrets Medical Manual" onto his desk and quickly forgot about it. A few days later, he ran into his neighbor Uncle Li and noticed that Uncle Li's complexion was sallow, breathing rapid and labored, with persistent coughing—symptoms resembling a lung infection.
Due to his sensitivity as a medical student, Su Mu suggested that Uncle Li go to the hospital for a check-up. However, Uncle Li waved him off, insisting that it was just an old ailment flaring up and that some medicine would suffice; he absolutely refused to go to the hospital.
Knowing Uncle Li's stubbornness, Su Mu could only relent. But over the next few days, Uncle Li's cough worsened significantly. Su Mu watched helplessly as concern gnawed at him. He urged Uncle Li again to visit the hospital, but Uncle Li still refused and even got angry.
Feeling at a loss, Su Mu suddenly remembered the "Heavenly Secrets Medical Manual" he had tossed aside on his desk. With a mindset of trying anything rather than nothing, he opened the Medical Compendium in hopes of finding some remedies that could help Uncle Li without needing to go to the hospital.
He flipped back to the page titled “Wang Qi Diagnosis” and began to observe Uncle Li’s aura according to the methods described in the book. To his surprise, he truly saw a layer of gray mist enveloping Uncle Li, interspersed with black spots, which in the Medical Compendium indicated a critical illness!
A jolt ran through Su Mu. Could it be that everything recorded in this Medical Compendium was true? If so, Uncle Li’s condition was even more serious than he had imagined!
He continued to browse through the Medical Compendium, hoping to find corresponding treatment methods. Suddenly, a line of small text caught his eye: “Lung Yin Han, evil qi has entered the body, cannot be treated with ordinary medicine, must use ‘Return of Yang Nine Needles’ in conjunction with ‘Qing Fei Tang’ for it to be effective.”
Return of Yang Nine Needles? Qing Fei Tang? Su Mu had never heard of these two treatments, but a glimmer of hope arose within him. He decided to take a leap of faith and attempt to treat Uncle Li according to the records in the Medical Compendium…
Taking a deep breath, Su Mu tried to calm himself. He knew this was a tremendous challenge for him, as he had never studied acupuncture or traditional Chinese medicine. But he had no choice; Uncle Li’s condition was urgent.
He carefully studied the acupoint diagrams and techniques for “Return of Yang Nine Needles,” as well as the herbal formula and preparation methods for “Qing Fei Tang.” The text in the Medical Compendium was obscure and difficult to understand, forcing Su Mu to read it repeatedly while integrating what he had learned from modern medical knowledge.
Fortunately, although his grandfather had not imparted the essence of traditional Chinese medicine to him, he had taught him some basic theories and acupuncture techniques. This provided a foundation for Su Mu to comprehend and master the contents of the “Heavenly Secrets Medical Manual.”
He rushed to a nearby herbal medicine shop and purchased the necessary herbs according to the records in the Medical Compendium. Upon returning home, he carefully washed the herbs and then prepared them according to the instructions in the book.
During the preparation process, Su Mu did not dare to be careless; he strictly controlled the fire and timing, ensuring that the medicinal properties could be maximized.
Once the medicine was ready, Su Mu took the bowl and went to Uncle Li’s house. Uncle Li’s complexion was even paler than before, and his breathing was more labored. Seeing Su Mu, he managed a weak smile: “Xiao Mu, you’re here again? My old ailment doesn’t need a hospital…”
“Uncle Li, since you don’t want to go to the hospital, let me give it a try,” Su Mu said firmly. “I’ll use traditional Chinese medicine; it might just help your condition.”
After hesitating for a moment, Uncle Li finally nodded. Su Mu helped him sit up and then began to administer acupuncture.
The Return of Yang Nine Needles features acupoints that are quite unique, some of which even Su Mu, a medical student, had never heard of. However, relying on his understanding of the Medical Compendium and the basic acupuncture techniques taught by his grandfather, he accurately located each acupoint and inserted the silver needles.
As the needles were inserted, Uncle Li's complexion gradually regained some color, and his breathing became steadier. Su Mu felt a surge of joy; it seemed that the Return of Yang Nine Needles was indeed effective!
After finishing the acupuncture, Su Mu served the prepared Qing Fei Tang to Uncle Li, who drank it in one go. As the medicinal soup entered his mouth, a warm current spread throughout his body. Uncle Li felt a refreshing sensation in his lungs, and his breathing became even smoother.
"This... is truly miraculous! After coughing for so long, I can finally breathe freely!" Uncle Li exclaimed.
Su Mu also breathed a sigh of relief; he knew he had made the right bet.
In the following days, Su Mu performed acupuncture and prepared medicine for Uncle Li every day. Under Su Mu's meticulous treatment, Uncle Li's condition improved day by day; his cough gradually diminished, and his complexion returned to a healthy hue.
A week later, Uncle Li was able to get out of bed and move around. He grasped Su Mu's hand excitedly and said, "Xiao Mu, thanks to you, if it weren't for you, my old life would have been over! You are truly my lifesaver!"
Su Mu smiled and replied, "Uncle Li, what are you saying? You're too polite; this is what I should do."
The news of Uncle Li's sudden recovery quickly spread throughout the neighborhood, and everyone praised Su Mu's medical skills. As a result, Su Mu gained considerable fame in the community, with some even beginning to refer to him as "Little Divine Doctor."
Su Mu did not become arrogant or complacent due to this praise; he knew this was just a starting point on his journey in medicine. He still had much to learn and many challenges to face.
The miraculous power of the Heavenly Secrets Medical Manual sparked a strong interest in traditional Chinese medicine and metaphysics within Su Mu. He began to study the Medical Compendium diligently and attempted to learn about Gua Shu. He wondered why his grandfather had never mentioned it before; such a treasure deserved thorough exploration.
