After a month of practice, I feel that my physical fitness has improved significantly, but I've developed a bit of a bad habit: I want to kick everything I see. Last time, I kicked a trash can on the street and was scolded by the lady in charge of street sanitation. Moreover, the process of stretching my ligaments has been particularly painful; after a month, I'm still not fully flexible. If I were to do a split now, I would still struggle a bit. However, it's all worth it because school starts tomorrow. Teacher Jin has arranged for us to have our final assessment today. This will summarize our learning over the past month. The twenty or so apprentices stood in a line together. "Today is the last class of our Taekwondo summer training. We will summarize and check the results of our summer learning and see which student is the most talented Taekwondo warrior. Xiang Jie, you don't need to participate in the evaluation; you can step aside and watch."
"Why not?" I found it hard to believe and couldn't understand why I was excluded. Teacher Jin explained, "Xiang Jie, don't overthink it. You are a transfer student and a newcomer who has only practiced for a month, while the other students have trained for two months. It wouldn't be fair for you to compete against them." Haoshuai nodded at me from the side, indicating that I should not participate in the evaluation. "No! I can participate in the evaluation!" Without thinking, I volunteered. "Well..." Coach Jin thought for a moment: "Alright, since you want to compete with them, then join in. On my command, we will divide into twelve pairs for combat." With Coach Jin's command, we freely paired up. This time Haoshuai did not participate in the competition; perhaps it was because his skills were too advanced. I never expected Coach Jin's Mandarin to be this good; if he didn't speak it himself, I wouldn't have known he was Korean.
After several rounds of competition, it was finally our turn. My opponent was a short guy. After we took our positions, he charged at me with a downward strike, which I easily dodged by stepping aside. Taking advantage of the moment, I instinctively used "Lingbo Microstep" and turned to kick him, landing a solid hit on his side. He winced from my kick, and before he could react, I kicked him squarely in the chest, knocking him down hard. "Stop!" Coach Jin called out to end the match and declared me the winner. I saw Haoshuai smiling at me with an approving look; he must have seen me in a new light now. My goal is to reach the color of his belt—not just that but also Coach Jin's belt color! It's just a matter of time; maybe it will take years or even more than ten years. However, school starts tomorrow, and it's time to shift my focus entirely to basketball. I haven't played with A Fei this entire month; I wonder if he has been practicing at the school gym without me as his playing partner.
It's September 1st again; a new semester begins. A Fei and I rode our bikes to school together. "A Fei, did you go to the school gym to practice basketball this past month?" I asked him as we rode along. He smiled awkwardly: "I only practiced a few times; it was too hot to move around much. By the way, you haven't looked for me to hang out this past month; I heard from Aunt Xiang that you went to learn Taekwondo—how's that going?" I smiled proudly: "Of course I've made great progress! Don't forget that my talent is astonishingly high; what's Taekwondo compared to that?"
"Really?" A Fei looked at me with some skepticism; he's quite suspicious by nature. Just then, as we reached the school gate, Sha Xiaomei ran over. "Hey! Sha Xiaomei! I've missed you!" A Fei greeted her with a big smile while I stood there dumbfounded, suddenly feeling envious of their interaction because my relationship with Xia Ying used to be like that too—now… things don't look very optimistic.
After a while, I saw Xia Ying walking alongside Zhang Yirong and Gu Mei Jiao—the Three Sisters—and felt overjoyed as I smiled and walked toward them. To my surprise, Xia Ying didn't even glance at me and walked right past without acknowledging me. I gestured to Zhang Yirong for her to step aside so we could talk; she excused herself from Xia Ying and Gu Mei Jiao and came over to me. "What's up? Spit it out quickly," Xia Ying said rudely. With an impish expression, I quietly asked her: "Hey, Rongrong Jie, can you tell me how Xia Ying has been doing lately?"
"Why don't you just ask her yourself? Why ask me? Wait—no way! You're her boyfriend; you should know! It's obvious you've been neglecting Yingying lately," Zhang Yirong replied indignantly as if I were an irresponsible bad boyfriend—well... upon reflection, she might have a point.
"Ahh... it's not like that! This is complicated; it's hard to explain everything right now! Just tell me how Yingying has been during this time!" Since I couldn't explain clearly anyway, I decided not to try anymore. Zhang Yirong scoffed: "Which aspect are you referring to?"
I thought for a moment: "Her emotions? How are they?"
"Very good," Zhang Yirong replied without hesitation.
I continued asking: "What about her behavior when she's with you guys?"
"Extremely good," Zhang Yirong answered again.
"Then... does she ever mention me when you're together?" I slowly approached the main topic.
Zhang Yirong pouted and looked up thoughtfully for a moment before saying: "Well... no." It seems Xia Ying hasn't had any quarrels with them about me yet; she's just giving me the cold shoulder again—I wonder how long this will last this time? Looking back now, it's clear that I'm responsible for this situation; if I'd just agreed from the start, none of this would have happened—sigh! Regret won't help now.
