On this tranquil snowy night, it was most fitting to sit by the warm fireplace with a book in hand.
Pei Guanjing rummaged through the room and found a military book he had read before. However, feeling restless and unable to sleep, he decided to pass the time with it, hoping it would lull him into slumber.
With a blanket draped over his legs and holding the Medical Book in his hands, he read line by line with great concentration.
At that moment, the only sounds he could hear were the soft whispers of snowflakes falling outside and the occasional crackle of the burning coals.
Suddenly, a loud and unusual thud shattered the tranquility.
The sound resembled tiles falling, seemingly coming from across the way. Pei Guanjing instantly became alert, dropping the Medical Book and throwing off the blanket as he rushed outside.
Across from him was Ye Chen's room.
At that moment, he saw that the roof could no longer bear the weight of the accumulated snow and with a loud crash, large chunks of tiles began to collapse.
Snowflakes and shattered tiles flew everywhere, creating chaos.
Pei Guanjing felt a momentary blankness in his mind, his limbs cold as if they had lost all sensation. But he quickly regained his composure, rushing forward without hesitation, desperately pulling at the door while shouting hoarsely, “A Chen! A Chen!”
However, there was no response from inside.
Anxious and frantic, Pei Guanjing frantically cleared away the fallen snow and tiles from the ground.
Finally, after removing all obstacles, he saw Ye Chen peacefully lying in bed, sound asleep.
Most of the fallen tiles had landed on the snow outside, while a tilted beam conveniently supported the ceiling above where Ye Chen slept, creating a relatively spacious area for him.
The sound of collapsing tiles hadn’t even disturbed him; it seemed he was sleeping too deeply, and the noise on the snow wasn’t loud enough to wake him.
When Pei Guanjing trembled as he reached out a finger to touch Ye Chen's nose and felt his warm breath, his taut nerves finally relaxed slightly as he began to breathe deeply.
In that brief moment, he had felt as though his heart had stopped. After taking several deep breaths, he extended his hand gently to caress Ye Chen's cheek, his voice soft yet tinged with an imperceptible tremor as he quietly called out, “A Chen, wake up.”
For a long time, Ye Chen did not stir.
As Pei Guanjing was about to press on a pressure point to wake him, a strong scent of Haitang Fragrance suddenly wafted into his nostrils. Startled, he realized that it was A Chen's Rain Dew Period.
At that moment, Ye Chen's cheeks were slightly flushed, exuding a unique charm. His long eyelashes cast a faint shadow on his cheeks, and his lips were slightly pursed, radiating an irresistible allure.
Pei Guanjing let out a long breath and looked at Ye Chen, inexplicably smiling.
Fortunately, it was just the Rain Dew Period; there was no serious issue.
His heart, which had been suspended high in the clouds, was now gently set back down.
Seeing Ye Chen lying peacefully in his arms, motionless except for a slight frown, Pei Guanjing couldn't help but chuckle softly, "A Chen, you really are..."
Carefully, Pei Guanjing lifted Ye Chen in his arms. However, as he did so, the wounds on his body that had just healed reopened due to the sudden movement, and a trickle of blood seeped out.
Meanwhile, Ye Chen, who lay with his eyes closed in Pei Guanjing's embrace, suddenly caught a whiff of that faint yet enchanting fragrance—Pei Guanjing's scent. Instinctively following the aroma, Ye Chen reached out and grasped the hem of Pei Guanjing's clothing.
Pei Guanjing carried Ye Chen to his room and gently laid him on the bed.
Just as he intended to change his clothes, he felt Ye Chen tugging at his collar and turned to look at him.
The boy's pale face seemed to be in distress even in sleep; his brows were furrowing tighter as if he were having a nightmare. At the same time, the scent of Haitang grew stronger and more insistent in Pei Guanjing's nose.
Noticing this, Pei Guanjing slowly leaned down and tenderly stroked Ye Chen's cheek before gently adjusting his head. Just as he was about to mark Ye Chen to suppress the Rain Dew Period, a familiar voice suddenly asked from beside him, "What are you going to do?"
Pei Guanjing turned his head slightly; their faces were less than ten centimeters apart. He exhaled softly and said, "Your Rain Dew Period has erupted; I'm going to mark you."
Hearing this, Ye Chen abruptly opened his eyes and forcefully pushed Pei Guanjing away. He quickly scanned the room and realized it wasn't his own. Narrowing his eyes at him, he said, "This isn't my room; how did I end up here?"
Noticing Ye Chen's gaze, Pei Guanjing hurriedly explained, "The tiles in your room collapsed; it's no longer livable."
Ye Chen stared at him intently before coldly turning away with a huff. "Hmph! I could stay in my father's room. What do you want by bringing me to yours?"
Pei Guanjing usually remained calm like the wind but felt a bit flustered at that moment. After pausing for a few seconds, he replied, "Other rooms would take time to warm up even if we lit a fire. Besides, with the heavy snow outside, the firewood is wet. It’s late at night; just stay in my room."
As he spoke, Pei Guanjing kept his gaze firmly locked onto Ye Chen's eyes, not a hint of distraction in his expression.
"Hmph!" Ye Chen let out a cold snort, a look of disdain crossing his face. "I don't need your kindness." With that, he pushed himself up from the bed, intending to leave this uncomfortable place.
However, as his eyes swept to the edge of the bed, Ye Chen's movements abruptly halted. He realized that he had been carried here by Pei Guanjing and was naturally without shoes.
It was the depths of winter, and although there was a fire burning in the room, the cold stone floor sent shivers down his spine just thinking about it.
Furrowing his brows, Ye Chen quickly weighed his options in his mind for a few seconds. His stubborn nature urged him to leave. Taking a deep breath, he slowly extended his feet toward the ground.
Yet, before his feet could touch the icy stone slab, Pei Guanjing suddenly seized his ankle.
With his feet lifted abruptly, Ye Chen lost his balance and fell forward uncontrollably, crashing heavily onto Pei Guanjing's mattress.
At that moment, Ye Chen's hair was somewhat disheveled, a few strands sticking to his pale cheeks that were slightly flushed. His bright eyes widened in anger as he glared at Pei Guanjing, his chest heaving as he shouted, "You bastard, Pei Guanjing!"
His voice was laced with both grievance and fury.
Pei Guanjing looked at Ye Chen's disheveled state with a slight smirk playing at the corners of his mouth, clearly amused. He didn't let go but simply watched as Ye Chen struggled.
In that moment, he appeared rather cute and endearing.
