The troops from Lan Prefecture have come to provide support, but why hasn't he received any news? Liu Jin furrowed his brow as he looked at Pei Guanjing, observing him quietly. Pei Guanjing, dressed in a deep blue long robe, had his shoulder stained and soaked with blood. Yet, despite this, the man's eyes were resolute, and his words carried weight, indicating that there was indeed some truth to the matter.
On the Azure Wind Bright Moon Night, amidst the snow and sturdy pines, Pei Guanjing was as unfathomable as the rumors suggested. However...
As Liu Jin's gaze swept over the bloodstains on Pei Guanjing's clothes, he averted his eyes. If he had intended to disregard Chen'er’s safety and only care for his own well-being, he would not have sustained such serious injuries. When Ye Chen returned, aside from a scratch on his face, there were no other wounds visible, which clearly showed that he had protected Ye Chen very well.
Such a husband—if he were not Pei Yongshang's Adopted Son—Liu Jin would certainly agree to this marriage. But now, Pei Guanjing and Chen'er's engagement was no longer something they could decide alone; it represented the alliance of powers from the capital, Lan Prefecture, and Chongzhou, concerning the stability of the realm. Moreover, it involved Chen'er's future happiness, which he could not decide lightly.
"Hmph, how can I know if what you say is true? Why have I not received any letters? The troops from Lan Prefecture have come to Chongzhou, yet no news has been released. Are you trying to deceive me?"
Although Liu Jin knew in his heart that Pei Guanjing would not lie to him, he still felt displeased. His son was standing beside him, pouring him water.
"Guanjing, drink some hot water; your medicine will be ready soon," Ye Chen said. Though he could not intervene in the military matters, serving tea and water was still within his capabilities.
His father had hidden his identity and concealed himself here because there was a traitor in the Chongzhou Military Camp who leaked maps of Chongzhou, leading to an invasion by troops from Lin Prefecture and resulting in countless casualties. His father had received news in advance and played along with Uncle Huo to set up this ruse to draw out the mastermind behind it all. However, they did not anticipate that so many soldiers from Lin Prefecture would arrive; it exceeded their calculations. Thus, they had no choice but to avoid confrontation for now and planned to feign death until a suitable opportunity arose to lure out the culprit. Had his father not informed him of these matters today, he might have genuinely believed that something terrible had happened to him.
"Sir, the time has come." A voice unfamiliar to him came from outside; it was the soldier who had brought him here to find his father.
Upon hearing this, Liu Jin glanced at Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen before suddenly standing up and opening the door to step outside. However, he did not close the door; instead, he left it ajar and looked back toward them from a distance.
After Liu Jin left, Ye Chen exchanged a few glances with Pei Guanjing before taking the bowl of medicine Liu Jin had finished: "I'll go find you something to eat."
Seeing Ye Chen walk out, Pei Guanjing smiled and nodded: "Alright."
Ye Chen returned once more, carrying a bowl of porridge and offering it to him. Pei Guanjing, however, did not take it; he merely pressed his lips together and gazed at him.
“A Chen, I initially…”
“Don’t talk, just eat. After the medicine is ready, you can take it,” Ye Chen interrupted him, placing the porridge in front of Pei Guanjing and impatiently urging, “Hurry up and drink.”
Before long, Liu Jin returned. He stared at Pei Guanjing for a long moment without speaking, then stepped forward to pat Ye Chen on the head. “A Chen, it’s getting late; you should go to bed.”
“But the medicine in the kitchen…”
Liu Jin snorted coldly. “Pei Gongzi understands medicine; he doesn’t need anyone else to help him prepare it. You don’t need to worry about that; go back to your room and sleep.”
Liu Jin’s tone was firm, indicating that Ye Chen could no longer stay here. Since Pei Guanjing was already fine, Ye Chen decided not to say anything further and turned to leave.
Pei Guanjing remained silent for a moment as he watched Ye Chen’s departing figure, but he was soon called back by Liu Jin. “Regarding the military affairs of Lan Prefecture, my personal guards have reported back; this matter counts as your achievement. Now that the timing is right with General Huo, I need to take charge. As for Chen’er… I’m temporarily entrusting him to your care. Can you manage that?”
Pei Guanjing stood up and bowed. “I will protect A Chen without regard for my own life; please rest assured, King Huai'an.”
With his promise secured, Liu Jin felt truly relieved. He could not afford to be away from the front lines for too long, and leaving Chen’er alone here made him uneasy. Since Pei Guanjing had arrived, he would temporarily be responsible for protecting Chen’er.
“I will leave tonight; you can explain everything to him tomorrow.” With that, Liu Jin exited through the back door of the courtyard.
On this snowy winter night, the sky was a dark red, as if it were about to bleed at any moment.
The tranquil and serene mountain village had long since fallen asleep, with only the horse tied in the stable being led away by Liu Jin and his companions.
This was the countryside, a private residence belonging to his loyal soldiers. He was temporarily staying here to confuse others; with so many people around, the risk of exposure was too great. Leaving now would actually be beneficial for Chen'er.
Turning back to glance at the lit room inside, Liu Jin turned around and drove the horse-drawn carriage away with his men.
After Liu Jin left, Ye Chen did not fall asleep. Instead, he sat on the edge of his bed, contemplating whether he should go see Pei Guanjing. His injuries were severe; even walking to the small kitchen seemed like a challenge. Did he really want to indulge in his father’s nonsense?
Just then, as Ye Chen's thoughts swirled in confusion, a sudden sharp sound of something breaking pierced through the quiet.
Was it a bowl that shattered?
Ye Chen sprang up abruptly and rushed out of his room.
As he hurried into the small kitchen, he found Pei Guanjing holding a bowl of medicine, gently bringing it to his lips. Upon seeing Ye Chen, he seemed unsurprised and smiled at him. "You’re here."
Looking at the medicine in Pei Guanjing's bowl, Ye Chen asked in confusion, "The medicine is still there, so what was that sound just now?"
"How could I bear to break the medicine you’ve prepared for me? That was just me accidentally knocking over a bowl while getting this one. Did I disturb you?"
Following Pei Guanjing's gaze, Ye Chen noticed that indeed, a bowl lay shattered on the floor nearby.
